5.0 out of 5 stars Unique "bio-Cone" by Sony MDR-e888LP/SP, November 21, 2010
This review is from: Sony MDR-E888LP Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
Soney e888 earbud is famous for their unique "bio-Cone" which required relativly long burn-in processes. (be careful of the volumes)
That is why at first, the e888 sounded nothing special like with no mid range at all, but after a burnt-in the earphones for two weeks (with low volumes because I didn't want to break them). Their whole sound changed to a super-oustanding earbud !!!
Some people complain that the phones wouldn't fit in their ear perfectly, but I don't have such issue at all. May be a little expensive, but you will be happy with them, I can practically guarantee it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony's nicest earbuds deliver the goods, pretty much, November 21, 2010
This review is from: Sony MDR-E888LP Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
Sony makes a large line of earbuds known as Fontopia. Supposedly the most elite of the line is the MDR-E888LP/SP, the top model which is rarely found in stores and online nowadays.

What to know: The E888LP/SP differentiate themselves from lower models with their 16mm size, neodymium magnets, and bio-cellulose diaphragms. Together, they give a very wide 8-27,000hz frequency range, which is excellent for their size and for headphones in general. They also come with a rather elaborate and exotic looking case for LP (leather pouch for SP, respectively) that keeps them well protected.

The earbuds: They have rather wide but not oversized buds, with long, flexible tails down to the cord, which is painfully thin and almost unbelievable that it could carry that much sound. The cord is a somewhat annoying neck-chain design, with a long cord for the right earbud emanating from the left side. The cord is long (LP), with a gold-plated plug. The earbud has nice silver trim and looks a cut above the lower models. SP version is perfect if you already have an remote/adapter control. (I find it a perfect mate with Sony mw600 HIFI bluetooth adapter on iPhone4!) The case itself is compact and stores the buds in a special clear compartment, then the cord winds around the underside with the plug being stored in yet another tiny compartment. One can barely feel them when they are on. Nifty.

How they sound: There is solid separation of sounds, extremely deep bass (as good as fullsize headphones), and sparkling highs. They run off very little power, making them great for portables like the iPod. They can take quite a bit of power, and as long as your music collection is good quality (or made up of CDs) you should be alright. Their sound is not as wide and spacious as my MDR-F1s, but those have not a prayer of leaving the house as they are huge and somewhat delicate.

I do respect these legendary earbuds, because besides the few shortcomings they have solid, wide-range sound and are the smallest good headphones one can find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best earphone for clarity, October 28, 2011
This review is from: Sony MDR-E888LP Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
I have been using this earphone since I was in high school, which was 10 year ago. (broke one pair, using the second pair) Now I have so many pairs (Shure, Senn.,SONY), this is still the best set in terms of clarity. You can really hear each layer of the sound.. The bass is precise, not over produced like many earphones in US market, that is probably why SONY don't sell this set in US market. The high and mid is one of the best in earphone field. I got this in China (made in Thailand with sony warranty) and much cheaper than amazon is charging for. If you want super ass bass, this is not the right one for you. If you want super clarity and super precise sound, this is the one to beat. One more thing, this earphone is somehow fragile, be careful when tossing it to your backpack.
