5.0 out of 5 stars Portable quality sound at last
Folds into a size small enough for any pocket with my Cowon D2. Clarity is good, nice range and bass is deep for the size. Doesn't make you feel like you're missing anything like most portable headphones. Much better sounding than my MDR-g52g and they stay on well enough to go running with. Padding is much improved over most open-air Sony headphones. For the price I hope...

I purchased this mainly because I wanted a comfortable neckband headphone -- in this regard it's okay. Sonically, it's slightly better than the stock earphones that come with ipods, zunes, etc... but it doesn't really compare to a similarly priced/sized Sennheiser PX100 or even the much cheaper Koss KSC75.

The bass is there, details are good enough to enjoy at midrange, and the soundstage is decent enough for me. Now for the bad: transparency is significantly worse compared to the PX100, timbre sucks, and worst yet... the sound starts to saturate at mid-volume. To put it in perspective, on a volume scale of 1 to 10, the Sony starts to lose sonic details at around 6 while the Sennheiser PX100 will retain its sonic quality up to 10!

I guess this headphone is good enough for casual use at low volume listening.

Other headphones I own: Sennheiser HD650, HD595, HD497, PX100, Koss KSC75, UE Super.fi5 Pro, Panasonic RP-HC500, etc...

Perfect for people who wish they could fit quality sound into their pockets without 6ft. cord and massive cans to draw attention. I have Sennheiser 202's that sound slighty better, but are a hassle to bring along.

These are easily some of the coolest headphones I've ever purchased. I originally bought them because I was looking for a relatively cheap pair of running headphones, and these seemed to be the best bang for your buck. Despite the fact that they're great for running, they're simply amazing headphones that cannot only fold up for easy storage, but feature a very convenient retractable cord. The one nitpick I have though, is the cord is on the left ear, so if you like to keep your mp3 in your right pocket, the wire is going to have to cross over in front of you. Not a deal breaker by any means, but worth mentioning in case anyone out there is obsessively cord compulsive.

If you're not an audiophile and are looking for a great pair of everyday headphones, these are definitely worth a shot.

Did I mention that they have a retractable cord?

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Design, Mediocre Audio, December 24, 2008
This review is from: Sony MDR-G75LW Street Style Neckband Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
I really like how these headphones fold up and how they fit on my ears. I bought them mostly for the retractable cord, which did not disappoint. I like how they let in virtually all ambient sound, so I can hear what's going on around me. I do NOT like that the cord is so short (3 ft, I think.) It has forced me to switch my iPhone-carrying pocket to my left side, since the cord comes down off the left ear, which really bothers me. So this feature is bad for anyone who is not left-handed.

The audio quality is throughly mediocre if not bad for this price range. I hate to think what the $20 version of this headphone sounds like. All the reviewers on this page who rave about its bass and treble must have never heard anything better than the iPod stock earbuds. I think these reviewers would feel born again if they ever heard a $70 pair of Grado SR60's.

Bottom line: these headphones are overpriced for what you get.

3.0 out of 5 stars Apparently, not good for exercise, but good otherwise, February 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony MDR-G75LW Street Style Neckband Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
I got a pair of these at the Apple Store in 2008 as a replacement for my dying earbuds. At first, I loved them, LOVED them. I love the retractable line, and they are very compact and durable... for everyday use. I liked them so much I ordered a pair from Amazon for my girlfriend, and she loved hers too.

Then I joined a gym.

Within a couple of months of semi-regular workouts, both of the sets of headphones had died. I first thought my own pair was dying through use and abuse, then we tried using my girlfriend's instead... they died the same way. It started with the sound coming and going in one ear, then both died completely. Apparently, these headphones can't handle the sweat. It seemed silly to me at first until I started searching Amazon for over-ear headphones that are good for exercise and I began to find numerous other people experiencing the same problems (with various models and brands, not just Sony). So, unfortunately, this heavily colors my view of these headphones. Let's face it, they aren't exactly cheap, even with the Amazon price-savings ($50 retail, $35 on Amazon), and I'd expect or hope more durability. Or a warning... something!

At this point, I'm relying on earbud phones until I can find a good set of headphones that can stand up to exercise. For regular, street use, I think these are great headphones and may even buy another pair at some point, but I would strongly suggest you not exercise with these.

Addendum: This review is largely about my exercise experience, other people comment on sound. I'll add the sound is good, but I thought the greater value was in the compactness and durability in the fold-up structure. The sound itself was not really better than a $20 pair of fold-up Phillips headphones I bought at a drugstore, but, they look better and are more compact, so, worth the extra money to me, up until I sweated them to death.

5.0 out of 5 stars These headphones are wonderful..., October 18, 2009

I almost never review products, however, some products are worth sharing...

I work in video/audio production and am always looking for a pair of workout headphones that can offer the same kind of sound quality as the expensive studio counterparts. I've always loved the "street style" or behind the neck design. These are comfortable headphones, the ear pads are extremely soft and they feel comfortable on your ears. They won't fall off or shift as you run or work out. The retractable cable is a nice feature too; its not really a big deal, but it's nice to eliminate cables getting tangled up in your bag or pockets between uses. The sound quality; possibility the most important feature of headphones; is excellent not only for the cost but also compared to more expensive models. I prefer my MDR-G75L over my $100 Sony Pro MDR-7506 studio headphones any day. I'm a person who likes a lot of bass in my music and these headphones deliver wonderfully rich balanced sound with excellent bass performance.

In the same style as the Sony MDR-G75s are the Sennheiser PMX100, and a few other similarly modeled sennheisers; Don't buy any of these. I did buy a pair and after taking them out of the packaging and placing them on my ears knew immediately that i had to return them. There uncomfortable and the sound is horrible. Trust me, don't waste your time ordering them and then shipping them back, just buy these Sonys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good exercise headphones, April 5, 2009
This review is from: Sony MDR-G75LW Street Style Neckband Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
Overall build quality is good. But these headphones excel at preventing excess cord interfering with your workout. Cheaper than bluetooth headsets, and not reliant on batteries either. The inertial reel system for the cord works very well, and the cord itself, while thin, is covered in a durable nylon fabric. I've encountered some instances where the cord will not retract. But when this occurs, flipping or rotating the headphones in your hands appears to unlock it, enabling retract again. The headphones also fold, which is an added bonus before stuffing into your gym bag.

So what's the audio quality like? Mediocre. Not a problem at a noisy gym; and really, what other kind is there? Having previously used in-ear headphones that fit in the ear canal, I do not like the lack of sound isolation from over the ear headphones like these. But they are more comfortable for long term wear, especially when sweating. And they stay in place far better than ear buds. The covers on these headphones are removable, so they can be washed.

I can't attest to the overall durability yet. I imagine that the inertial reel would be an early failure point. But if they last for over a year I'll definitely purchase a follow-on pair when these wear out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Form over Function, January 13, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony MDR-G75LW Street Style Neckband Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
The foldable neckband and retractable cord are really cool, however the sound quality of these headphones are terrible. I've owned two pairs of Sony behind-the-neck headphones (S2 streetsyle ones which they sadly don't make anymore) and they sounded amazing. I bought these headphones assuming they would be just as good considering they were newer and the higher end model from Sony (they also have a pair that is $19.99 vs. 29.99). However the sound is completely underwhelming. The bass is weak, the treble isn't very loud, and even watching tv shows on my laptop, the midrange speech just sounds wierd. I returned the headphones after giving them several tries and am now looking for another set to buy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect sport headphones, January 12, 2012

I had MDR-G55, and I liked them so much that after about 2 years of heavy use I wanted to get the same pair again. The old ones began to tear around the foam lining, but still sound great.

These improved MCD-G75 look exactly the same, fit the same, but have the retractable cord that I loved when I first saw it. Also, the earpieces have much more padding for longer comfort. Perfect for bike commutes and exercising.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good as long as you are not jogging/running, December 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I keep trying to find a pair of headphones (non-earbuds) that are good for running, and out of all the ones I have tried these were the best, but still have some real problems. They slip down your ears if you sweat a lot while you run, and become painful if you also wear sunglasses. Also, the cord is made out of very flimsy material-mine became partially severed and the sound stopped working in one ear-had to throw them away yesterday, and I bought them less than a year ago. Wouldn't recommend these, especially not for vigorous exercise.
