Like I'm at the theater without some cow behind me chopping down on the popcorn (yes some "big girl" here in Iowa was able to eat throughout ""Dallas Buyers Club") or the old guy rattling the soda cup with ice in order to get the last sip of diet coke (throughout "Nebraska").

Had been using the Sennheiser 170 RS the past year. Great as regular headphones, but with the surround on the sort of silence when things got quiet and then background noise whenever the dialogue started; a halting starting and stopping of background noise. It just drove me nuts, so rarely used it in this mode. Also when using the remote the transient hum whenever I used the remote to start or stop the video or dvd.

So I had to find an alternative.

I found it with these. - just sound!! Nothing else. Scenes with no sound - nothing. Transition to scenes with dialogue or music, then just that. Nothing extra.

Great base - the sort of thumping when the bomb went off in action movies as well as the gun shots. Great expansive sound stage with the Cinema mode. Can go to just plain stereo or even turnn it off when watching the news.

As good as a dedicated home 5.1, 7.1,9.1? I don't know as I never had one of these. Modern house construction are not conducive to home theaters, unless you live alone. However, certainly as good as any theater I've been to. Even better. Soundstage more realistic as opposed to sounds coming from well behind that really don't correspond to the film that you get in theaters.

Great controls on the headset itself, no need to program my Harmony Touch.

Put them on your head and it turns on the base station as well.

I wish I had seen the older model DS7500 before I found the Senn's. So much for CNET reviews. They said the Senns were the best but never even mentioned the Sony's. How did they miss the background noise.

For those of you with some questions, I hope this review will help you because there isn't much information for these on the web or the reviews as to what they can do and how to set them up. So, here you go...

First of all, you get great digital options. The HDMI work nicely. All you do is go from your source (Blu-Ray, Cable-Box, etc.) with one HDMI cable, then your HDMI Out will go to your input on your TV. This is of course the most common connection method if you are simply using the TV speakers. However, if you have added a soundbar to your TV, without an amp or receiver in between, it will likely look something like this: You have your HDMI's running from the source (For me, it's my Apple TV and my Oppo Blu-Ray player) and they go to Input 1 and Input 2 on your TV. The HDMI's are running your video AND sound to the TV. Now you want to have sound to your Soundbar. Most soundbars are going to use an Optical In/Out and NOT an HDMI. If you have the optical then here's how you do it: The sound is coming from the TV itself so you have an optical coming FROM the optical out of the TV TO the SONY optical IN. Another optical comes OUT of SONY To the Soundbar. All you are doing is creating what they call a Pass-Through. This simply means that the sound info passes through the headphone device but does not inhibit it from use. So you can have the device off or on and it won't affect your soundbar during regular use.

Now you are all set up. Anytime you want to just watch TV or a Movie using the sound bar, just turn it on and all will work normally. THE BEAUTY OF THIS SET-UP IS THAT NOW WHENEVER YOU WANT TO USE HEADPHONES, JUST PUT THEM ON YOUR HEAD AND YOU IMMEDIATELY GET THE SOUND.

These headphones work well, but as they were made for the Japanese market, all instructions are in Japanese. Note that all markings on the device are in english, so its not as bad as it sounds at first. I have purchased other Japanese market products, so this was no surprise to me. This is listed as an Amazon Prime item. I payed the 3.99 extra for next day delivery, and I did get it next day, no problems.

Operation of the device with its english markings is straightforward, its the initial configuration that can be difficult with only Japanese directions. Another poster mentioned going to "[...] and using Google Translate. This is good advice, as this will get you to the three PDF manuals you can download. One of the PDF documents is only one page, and simply directs you to "[...] for assistance with configuring (still in Japanese, of course). I found that webpage, run through Google Translate, to be the best english directions. I didn't setup using an AVR, so my installation was the simplest.

What I wanted from these headphones was good wireless reception in an apartment building. All other wireless headphones I have tried had interference problems, probably due to all the other wireless devices in the 2.4ghz band within range of my apartment from other residents (phones, routers, Bluetooth, headsets, etc.) The MDR-HW700DS is the only unit I could find that will operate in the less used 5ghz band. It has a switch for setting which band to use, 2.4ghz or 5ghz, on its side. These headphones do work interference free for me, and the quality of the surround sound is very good. The headphones have a solid feel, and seem well made.
