The King?,
By audiophile (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews

These headphones won't get you the ladies like the posts above claim but paired with the correct amplifier (they like tube amps) these babies make pure music. Yes, they are expensive, but they are the best at what they do: immerse you in music with a spacious sound that is very true to life. For alternatives look to the Stax Omega II electrostatic earspeaker system. For complete reviews and recommended amplifiers for the R10 search http://www.Head-Fi.org.

You see, these are magic headphones. When placed over your ears, they will instantly whisk you away to Happyland, where the streets are paved with gold, money falls from the sky, and sugar-plum fairies grant your every wish. These mystical headphones also enable you to run faster than a speeding bullet, and leap tall buildings in a single bound. All this for just under $4,000. What are you waiting for !!!!!

Audio nirvana,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony MDR-R10 Home Style Headphones (Electronics)
I recently had a chance to compare these head-to-head against some of the best dynamic headphones available (from Sennheiser and Grado). To my ears these sounded *substantially* better. The detail and realism was really wonderful. Of course they cost nearly times as much as most other audiophile headphones, but if you want to spend that kind of money on a pair of headphones, these would be the ones.

The Best!,

I recently had the chance to listen to these amazing headphones, and I was absolutely blown away. The soundstage and bass reproduction were like nothing else I have ever heard. I also listened to the $5000 sennheiser Orpheus that same day, and far preferred the R10. They are totally different headphones, but as far as cost-no-object sound reproduction goes I can't imagine where you could find better.
If any product bests another product that costs $1000 more, that is a bargain. These are definitely an expensive bargain.

Overpriced in the fine audiophile tradition.,
By Amber Vaesca (Portland, Oregon, USA) - See all my reviews

It has been said that this is probably the best dynamic headphone ever made. But is it worth it at its price? Unless you have a lot of money to spend, and must have the absolute best of something, no it is not. There are headphones which come within 99% of its potential at nearly ten times less its cost. If you need that last 1%, then go for it. Otherwise, there are plenty of headphones out there that will blow your head off with the sort of quality that would take tens of thousands of dollars to replicate in a typical speaker configuration. Conversely, at its price point, you could start seriously looking at some very fine electrostatic headphones which, while not to everyone's taste, are universally considered to have superior resolution and emersiveness to dynamic headphones (and typically come with their own amplifiers, which the R-10s do not). I give it five stars out of respect, not as a recommendation.

All my life I'm been unattractive to women. I've tried everything in an effort to get the chicks. However, dressing like Harry Potter, buying a wicked Ford Focus, getting a job as a computer programmer, and learning to play the harp all failed to deliver on their promise of converting me into a babe magnet.Nothing worked until I bought these headphones. Now the lovely ladies are swarming to me. They are worth every penny.

dynamic and useful!!,
This review is from: Sony MDR-R10 Home Style Headphones (Electronics)
First off, I was perplexed to see that Amazon placed this product in their "electronics" section and became increasingly befuddled that people have been reviewing the MDR-R10 as headphones. People: I'm 99% sure this is a paperweight.
With that out of the way, I give the MDR-R10 an Amazon "5-star" rating with the utmost confidence. Not only can this hold down two separate stacks of paper (if the stacks are close enough together to be under the twin polished-wood 'lumps'), but various other papers that are scattered around a desk will be held down (albeit somewhat less effectively) by the attached 10' rubber chord which terminates with another bonus(!), separate(!), over sized, plug-shaped weight. I have found a neat trick to make the chord and bonus weight more effective: run it over the top of the paper twice, perpendicularly, and the MDR-R10's will definitely keep those pesky papers down without them floating away in the breeze. Before I got the MDR-R10, I was using an extra box of staples my wife accidentally purchased (Staples, 1/4" Length, Full Strip, 210 Staples/Strip, 5000/Box SWI35108) as a paper weight and found them grossly inadequate. For all the reasons I've listed and more, as a paperweight the MDR-R10 blows away the box of staples (not to mention every other paperweight I've used) in all ways possible. Perhaps it's not a fair comparison; the box of staples, unlike the MDR-R10, is not designed as a paperweight, but irregardless, the box of staples was COMPLETELY out classed! As I'm writing this review, my wife just now reminded me that we also use the MDR-R10 as a doorstop. This is ridiculous; I mean, is there anything the MDR-R10 can't do?!?! Conclusion: this product is a VERY effective and dynamic paperweight (and also doorstop!), and the price of the MDR-R10 is more than justified. **Update: I have just confirmed this as a paperweight, as the "plug" won't fit into my iPod Shuffle OR my Zune.**

Might I recommend the AKG K701,

This review is from: Sony MDR-R10 Home Style Headphones (Electronics)
I can't imagine what $4000.00 headphones would sound like but I think that for about $400.00 you can be just as satisfied. I have a pair of AKG K701 and Im impressed every time I look at them, let alone put them on my head. Honestly the only thing I like about the Sony MDR-R10 is that they come with a hardshell case. I would have probablly paid an extra $150.00 for a good hardshell case for the AKG's. I am a fan of sony, they have never let me down when it comes to CD technology, I should have investied stock in the PS2 which has dominated the gaming world for a long time. If I had done that, I would probablly be rich enough own a pair but Im only 22 and have more important things to do with $4K. To those of you who have that kind of loot to spend almost 5 thousand on headphones and the EARMAX pro, more power to ya, just dont ever expect a guy like me to shine your shoes (for free).

These headphones, while very comfortable, are vastly overpriced for their sound quality...
