Real clean highs, and good clean lows. Deep deep bass doesn't penetrate that loudly with these phones, they still are better than everything else in their price and size range.

Most suited for portable digital music devices. Some of the other "studio" headphones suck up all your portable player's amperage, this one needs less juice to give you louder sound.

I use them with a mp3/fm player, and have found that the mdr's long cord makes for great FM reception, (even when most of its length is folded up somwehere).

These headphones have a weak spot on the headband where two peices of plastic meet. I broke it on one side, duck-taped it fixed, and then broke it on the other side as well, (just for stuffing it in to a jacket pocket). So don't test the plastic. It can't take pressure.

Before you get these ones, look at the Sony MDR-501LP headphones listed in 'similar products'. They look like great sounding headphones...

i had been using a pair of sony MDR-V700DJ headphones for a while but only while at home but they are far from portable. well, i went to bestbuy in search of something new that i could carry around with my when walking around campus everyday that were comparable to the MDR-V700's. these headphones were just the ticket.

not only do they sound really great using either my aiwa cd player or arkos mp3 jukebox but they fit right into my small backpack with ease. understand this though, these headphones do not fold up like the MDR-V700's. that is something i wish i would have known before buying them. they simply collapse, meaning the ear pieces fold up and into the headband. the one problem is that they really don't stay that way. sometimes i just wrap a rubber band around them to keep them from harm.

these headphones do have really great sound for being so small and inexpensive. the bass is outstanding and the treble is matched pretty well. luckily my mp3 player has an eQ, otherwise the treble would sound a bit muddy. the headphones block out almost all outside noise, but you do hear just enough to know what's going on and that is surely a good thing walking around campus and crossing streets. i think that is what these headphones are best for . . .travel by foot or sitting in your office. i wouldn't suggest these for use as a club dj ( that's why i had the MDR-V700DJ's in the 1st place. they are untouchable ) nor would i suggest these headphones if you need something really small and portable.

it's give and take when chosing a pair of headphones. give up a little size for a little better sound. well these do a damn good job of balancing out the two. it would have 5 stars if only they folded up like the MDR-V700DJ's do and if the highs were just a little higher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as I thought, January 8, 2005
By
This review is from: Sony MDR-V300 Monitor Series Headphones with Folding Design (Electronics)
I read the reviews of the MDR-V300 on Amazon.com and other sites and I got exactly what I thought it was. I tend to read the reviews that give 1 or 2 stars to look for the negative aspects of the product and see if it's pretty consistent. Don't get me wrong, the MDR-V300 is a good product and I love it. Because of the other reviews, I didn't expect any more than I should have.
The sound quality is excellent. Typically, I listen to videos and music files on my laptop. Even the cheap walkman type headphones sound better than my laptop's built-in speakers. Although I'm not an audiophile, I don't think I could tell the difference from headphones that cost significantly higher.
The construction is pretty cheap. Other reviewers said that it's not rugged enough if you plan on travelling with them and take it in and out of bags or cases repeatedly. It's true, but if you use them only at home or at the office, then it should be tough enough. I only take it between home and the office, so they don't get much wear-and-tear anyway. Actually, I like it because the phones are very lightweight.
This is exactly what I paid for and I'm happy with the quality, construction, and price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great... But With Flaws, February 7, 2004
This review is from: Sony MDR-V300 Monitor Series Headphones with Folding Design (Electronics)
These headphones are amazing, but they are not without flaws. After first purchasing them, it will take you about a week to get used to them. They are very uncomfortable at first, but after a while they are pretty good. The sound is these headphones is incredible! They are great for bass, and the guitar ad percussion are easily heard as well. There is only a couple of problems. The phones do not have a mono sound option with them. As I am deaf in one ear, this is extremely frustrating, because I find myself missing out on quite a bit of music when listening. These are more of a problem of some albums, like my favorite two albums by Jimi Hendrix. I will be missing out on a guitar riff or a song portion. To most people this isn't a big deal, but to people with one poor ear, it is a big letdown. The cord on the headphones is unnecessarily long. It gets tangled after three or four listens, and this is also fairly frustrating. There is one great use for these phones, and that is for use on the keyboard. I own an expensive KORG Triton keyboard and a Fender guitar, and these headphones are perfect for making music. They also block out more sound than most other headphones, but still quite a bit of noise leaks through. However, I don't use a subway system and I'm not on a plane more than once or twice a year, so this really doesn't bother me. For some people who travel a lot, or live in a place like New York City, these headphones may irritate you because the only block out some noise. Overall, these headphones have good sound and great quality. It has its problems, but it is a great buy, even for the shocking price tag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, small package, May 15, 2002

I purchased these headphones after my previoius pair started giving me headaches and hurting my ears. When I pulled the Sonys out of the box, I thought how good sound could come from these small headphones. However, they sound better than my older, much larger pair, and even rival my friends Koss. I didn't find the bass overpowering as I've read in so many reviews. I listen to all types of music, and found that the bass is deep and broad and the treble very clear. What I did find is that the treble sounds very tinny compared to the rich, deep bass, but the bass does not overpower. As for comfort, I wear these headphones more than four hours each days, and they feel fine even after many hours. I have heard some complain that they press too hard against the ears, but these are very light and fit on the ears very well. I would recommend these to someone who can find a good price (I did). They are good quality, sound great, and very comfortable.
P.S. I use these to listen on my computer, and I did not evaluate them on smaller audio devices, if that matters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review, February 24, 2000
By

The bass response is very good and clear. But I cannot say the same thing about the headphone's response to higher frequencies, especially when you listen to classical music, though you can hear the higher frequencies, but they do not stand out, not very sharp. I guess this headphone is designed towards pop and rap rather than classical music.

The headphone feels rather light, and except for the earpads, everything else is made of light plastic, there no feel of weight, which one normally associates with quality. But the sound is loud and clear nonetheless.

And as for use with portable CD players, one better hook up the CD player through a receiver, than hook the headphone to the receiver, that way the headphone will have a better trebble response through the receiver. Otherwise, the headphone does have good response for the high frequencies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great quality for a budget, December 26, 2004

I bought these headphones for audiophile listening to get better quality than a speaker system. These headphones work great for basic listening where details are wanted but not necessarily needed. The long cable allows for direct access to the back of the computer with needing an extension which would lower sound quality. The treble is very distinct and powerful, but the bass seems drowned out a bit and seems to be blurred (in an audio sense). The bad part of these headphones really comes down to the way they were made. The parts that hold the headphones together are just plastic. The swivel feature is the headphones worst fault. The swivel feature makes it so the headphones are held on by .25in of plastic which is easily snapped. Also, these headphones are extremely comfortable for short-term use. I do not recommend these headphones because since they do not cover the entire ear, they put pressure on the ears causing pain when listening to for a long period of time.

Pros:
High Quality in Treble and Midtones
Long Cable
Comfortable for Short Use

Cons:
Easily broken
Low Bass
Poor Construction
Useless Swivel Feature

3.0 out of 5 stars acceptable sound, prone to break, September 22, 2004

I've had two pairs break under normal usage (riding around in my backpack). They're simply not designed for anything approaching street use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, but not really collapsible., July 3, 2003
This review is from: Sony MDR-V300 Monitor Series Headphones with Folding Design (Electronics)
I bought this set of headphones after my cat ate my old ones. They are very comfortable, and the sound is great. Very clear and doesn't get distorted at high volume. I use them primarily for video games and mp3s on my laptop.

The downside however is that although advertised as foldable, I wouldn't really quailify them as such. I think that they were designed without being collapsible in mind, and then some exec said wait, these sorta fold up, advertise that on the package as a feature. Secondly, they have a long wire (which is great) however it doesn't wind up around the phones very well when they are "folded" and comes loose all the time in my bag.

If I didn't have to take them around with me however, then I would give them 5 stars.
