I purchased this product to play video games. Acoustic spatial localization is important to me, and I needed a solution that did not involve waking my newborn. I concur with the other reviewers that the included headset is garbage, but the Surround Sound decoder device that simulates surround sound is worth every dollar. It is compatible with any standard stereo headphones; in fact, you can connect two sets at once. I was used to using a Denon 7.1 system, and 5.1 systems were never sufficient for me. I was surprised with how precisely surround sound is replicated by this device. It is as effective as my 7.1 system. Dolby Headphone is a competing technology, but is only included in high end receivers. Also, there are some other similar devices on the market, but many require batteries. Using the Sony device, I can accurately localize the simulated location of any sound (i.e., at my 7 `oclock), which is a substantial advantage in competitive gaming. I use a headset designed for an Xbox 360, and the sound is excellent: crisp highs, deep bass, and warm mids. It also sounded great using a Bose headset. This is a "smart" alternative to the "surround sound" headphones that literally have multiple drivers in the earcups. You can do the research if you want, but it should be readily apparent that, because you have only two ears, surround sound can be simulated with stereo drivers. And I am here to tell you, Sony has the technology to do it. Frankly, I have been disappointed with the waning popularity of these things. I am buying an extra set in case Sony stops making them. I must say however, it may not be a good solution for movie watching. I turn the simulation effect off for movies.

I searched far and wide for a compact unit that would convert the TOSLINK audio (5.1) output of my new 26 inch LG HDTV to stereo so I could hook up my powered Bose speakers and enjoy a richer sound experience. The TV's downward firing speakers are crap for blockbuster movies and enhanced music performances. Unfortunately my HDTV does not have RCA or 3.5mm headphone outputs, only optical TOSLINK digital out. Go figure...

What I found out after trying two Gefen converters (sent back RMA) and researching several others is that the converter must be able to convert more than PCM stereo audio. It must be able to convert 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS signals to analogue stereo. Sure, I could have bought a 5.1 receiver, but that was not called for in the small bedroom where the TV is hung. Plus I was not only trying to save space but money as well. Amazon's price was beaten by a Brooklyn distributor by a $55 margin. It took a bit of doing to get those guys to ship the unit, but it arrived and I'm happy to say the unit is SUPER. The headphones will not be used anytime soon. I've got too many sitting around the house collecting dust already.

This wired device has been discontinued by Sony, but many retailers still have them in stock. Apparently there's greater demand for wireless headphones which is no surprise to anyone. Be careful to differentiate this Dolby converter from a PCM unit.

1) bad... bad... bad... felt bad about giving them away, bad headphones uh Sony. do it right or don't do it.
2) Decent little headphone amp. Not great, but worth $100 for sure.

Key points:
Buy another set of headphones (sony mdr-v600s are a great set already mentioned by others)
This is basically just an amp that does digital to analog conversion plus decoding. Your headphones reproduce the sound. The quality of your headphones will dictate the quality of the sound.
Worth $100.

I use this headphone amp with my good headphones (Audio Technica ATH-A900 or Sony MDR-V600 or AKG-K701) to watch movies and listen to music. I plug this amp into a presonus headphone amp to split it out to 4 sets of headphones. (Check out the presonus hp-4(?)). I get good clean, great sounding, surround sound movies in my apartment. I can deafen myself and no one is the wiser. I cannot ask for more. I use it basically as a Digital to Analog converter. I use digital in, effects to off.

Everyone who has heard my setup thinks it is great. Don't feel bad about spending $100 on the just the amp. $150 might be stretching it.

Best uses:
In an apartment after 10pm (quiet hours)
if you have sleeping kids (probably not good if you have a baby, you might not hear them)
Anytime you want shut out or in something such as background noise, or keep things quiet after hours.

Not so great:
It is really not a center of your hi-fi world. only one digital toslink port. You cannot plugin a blue ray player, and an apple tv, and a dvr, and etc. you can only plug in one thing.
The amp is really not a top of the line amp. its range and distortion are not that impressive. That is why I set it to one spot and push it through my other headphone amp. I do use it by itself periodically, it is good value for the money plain and simple.

I found these reviews while shopping for my backup one. Thought I would comment.

I bought this specifically for the decoder. I agree that the headphone that comes with the decoder is no good. It has very low sound quality. Much lower than the other Sony studio headphones. The decoder is pretty decent and I like it. If I spent more money I would've bought a full receiver instead of this Dolby Digital decoder. A receiver can do a lot more than this. The decoder has digital audio in, analog audio (headphone plug) in and two headphone ports out. It also has digital and analog decoder. If you set it to digital, it only uses the digital audio in. If analog, it ignores the digital audio in cable and uses the analog in. The decoder definitely decodes the sound to a surround sound. I'm pretty happy with the decoder sound. For $100, this is a simple little decoder, but if I spent little more I would've gotten a full receiver that has so many ports than this one. If you want to use this with a TV, I would recommend a receiver with a remote control that you can switch settings while you are sitting. Overall a decent product with very nice Dolby Digital surround sound decoding for the appropriate price. If you want something large and little complicated that minimally costs $100 more, I would recommend an actual receiver. If you want cheaper and straightforward dolby digital decoder, this one will do it nicely. I'm using my own headphone with the decoder.
