4.0 out of 5 stars great sound for the price
I have some really good headphones and earphones. I own Ultimate Ears super-fi 5's and Grado SR80's. 3.0 out of 5 stars Wind up storage case, not retractable
The product title is more than a little misleading. I was expecting a spring loaded retractable cord that takes the slack out of the cord while using them, and winds up the cord for storage. What you get is a convenient wind up case for storing the buds. It works well, just not what I expected. The product packaging doesn't contain any of the following words: Retractable,...

I have some really good headphones and earphones. I own Ultimate Ears super-fi 5's and Grado SR80's. I don't know if that makes me an audiophile or not, but I *do* know what good ear/head phones sound like. These sound pretty good for the money. I use them when I work around the house or ride my bike. The UE's are too isolating and the Grado's too bulky to use other than lying down or sitting down. So, these are good to wear when active. They fit in my ear nicely and have a pretty even sound. Might be thin in the bass end of things for you, but I find they are more or less accurate with a bias toward the high end of things. They're good enough to let me know that Metallica's "Death Magnetic" has very bad sound quality. Devin Townsend sounds crisp if a bit thin in them. They have pretty good details for little earphones that cost under $20.

As another review notes, they are not "silent," "retractable" or "behind the neck." I have no idea why the product description says that. But, they are fine little 'phones for the money.

Somebody just made up the amazon product title, not good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, for the price, November 6, 2008
This review is from: Sony MDRE828LP/SLV Lightweight Earbuds (Silver) (Electronics)
It's tough to go below 4 stars for a $10 price tag, but my complaint is that these aren't good for movement. If you're a runner, you'll need something else because these will fall right out of your ears. I've even had trouble keeping them in on some occasions when I'm merely walking.

Still, if you're just sitting in a car or on an airplane there's no reason you shouldn't get these. The only thing keeping this at 4 stars is the price/quality ratio, and as the price goes up my rating would go down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, sounds good, but won't last., August 12, 2011

I'll keep this review simple. The ear buds are perfect in size, sound quality, and cost. Unfortunately, these things come at a price. The ear buds are made of very light and hollow plastic, and will break if dropped on a hard surface. When it broke for me, I was able to snap the part that broke back into place, but there is nothing keeping it from happening again and possibly having something happen to the internals.

If you use these ear buds across multiple devices as I do, I do not recommend these because they will likely break. My last pair of Sony ear buds were not nearly this easily broken and lasted me a good two years. These ear buds had a faceplate on the ear side that broke in about a week.

This is a great product if you are VERY careful. Otherwise, stay away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Sound Quality and Convenience for $10, January 21, 2010
This review is from: Sony MDRE828LP/SLV Lightweight Earbuds (Silver) (Electronics)
I probably own a half dozen pairs of these and if you look in my laptop bag, gym bag, or weekend bag, you'll find it's little case in there. There's a pair of E828s next to the laptop I'm typing this review on, there's another pair in the armrest of my truck. Why? Because earbuds should be convenient, ready, and a joy to use, not wadded, tangled and crushed.

I love listening to music; anywhere and anytime the mood strikes me and I have a variety of other earbuds and headphones from the big names, but I keep coming back to these little guys. First off, they sound terrific, especially considering the price and that they only weigh 6g. The mids and trebles are crisp, not shrill or crackly and the bass is very good from a 16mm driver...nice and tight, not boomy and sloppy like some 'bass enhanced' juvenile models. Secondly, I dislike things either in or pressing on my ears. These sit comfortably right at the opening. Thirdly, if someone is at the door, calling my name, or asking me a question, I actually want to hear it. Lastly, at <$10 I'm not freaked out when a cat chews on one, or someone drops the grocery bag of canned goods on it. My super expensive stuff stays in the living room...these little guys travel the rest of the earth with me.

I would keep buying these for the sound, but the great little case cinches the deal.

Bonus tip: Cats love the taste of the cord, so when you first open a pair of these (or any rubbery cord phones) rub a drop of dish soap along the length of the cord (not the earpiece!) with your fingertips and let it dry...you'll never notice, but the cats will leave it alone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Have used this type for years., July 18, 2011
This review is from: Sony MDRE828LP/SLV Lightweight Earbuds (Silver) (Electronics)
I purchased my first set of these six years ago with my first ipod and it lasted me through the first year and a half until my ipod was stolen. Bought another pair for computer and cd player use they lasted well over a year. I am just now purchasing my sixth pair going into a seventh year. If you are easy-normal use on them they work a long time. The ones I am using now are just starting to go out after about 8 months but I am not nice to them, they are wrapped around my ipod, shoved into my pockets or backpack to get tangled with whatever is there. I love these things. If you don't mind spending 10 bucks a year on headphones that sound good and will hold up to teenage/college use these are them. They are leaps and bounds better than washed out ipod headphones. I have never had problems with these and will continue to buy them until I can no longer find them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 'Buds for the Price, July 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony MDRE828LP/SLV Lightweight Earbuds (Silver) (Electronics)
These really are terrific earbuds for the price- High value here! I got these to replace the fairly lousy headphones that came with my Sony Walkman. Sony SRF59SILVER AM/FM Walkman Stereo Radio They pair very well with the Walkman and also sound great on my MP3 players. They have proven to be fairly robust over time despite many snags of the cord on door handles, tool belt, etc.

Maybe my ears aren't as sensitive as they once were, but these sound great to me. Also, this reviewer never expects to find high fidelity through earbuds, no matter how nice they are or how much they cost. I let my home receiver take care of that need. For the money, then, these will stack up nicely to many pricier models. Indeed, I don't know that I would spend the dough for ones that purport to deliver vastly greater performance; that would be money wasted on these ears.

The ergonomics are nice and fit my ears securely without being too tight. They only come with one set of foam covers, however, so you'll be out of luck if the size of your ear doesn't match well with these. Some other earbuds do come with fittings that allow for a custom fit. Still, I find these to be comfortable, secure, and positioned in my ear to maximize sound transmission.

The mini jack at the end of these is set at a 90 degree angle to the cord. This may not matter to most, but I find that this setup resists separating from the player when it gets snagged. Nice touch, if that is what it is meant for.

A very cheap plastic case comes with these 'buds that allows you to carry them without fear of creating a Gordian knot. Cheap as it is, it is also surprisingly effective. I was going to toss it initially, but I'm glad I didn't. I find myself appreciating having my earbuds tucked away in my lunch box, tangle free and separated from stuff that would invariably end up on the cables of my other 'buds.

Are there better earbuds out there? I'd say yes, there probably are. But these are solid, great-sounding earphones at a price that's hard to beat. Super combination and recommended at four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just right, July 29, 2011

I purchased these headphones over ten years ago and lost them one day at the Charlotte airport! How could I?! These where the best $10 headphones I have ever owned and the loss sent me on a quest for new ones. Not being able to find them in local stores, I tried two different brands with no luck. The Phillips earbuds I currently have start to hurt my ears after a few hours of use, and the wind-up case they came with is difficult to use. I just had to order new Sony's. Hopefully they'll flawlessly last another ten years or more. Note - I am a man and have large ears and I think they fit great. I have read other reviews from women who say they don't fit so well.

I bought these to replace the headphones that came with the iPod. I get better sound with these. I don't bother putting on the foam liners since they always fall out, but they're are still very comfortable. I'm hard on my headphones since I use them to work out and use them at all day at work, so I can go through them (this is my 3rd set). For the sound, fit, and price, I wouldn't hesitate buying more of these
