3.0 out of 5 stars Above avg value, above avg discomfort
For the money, these are good "active" headphones with better sound than can typically be achieved by the small-driver, in-ear headphone alternatives. The behind-the-neck design is useful on runs where you have to wear a hat to protect against the sun or if you just want to keep your hair neat. I have found that 40 minutes is really the most I can stand to...

I don't know what "uncomfortable and no bass" was talking about...must've either been using another model or the sound source was crappy to begin with, but I have been using these for 4 years and they are fantastic. I've used them mainly for my portable Sharp MiniDisc player and my new portable Sony CD player, and they have an incredibly impressive dynamic range. From crisp highs to atmospheric mids and down to some DEEP BASS, these are awesome. Seriously, I barely ever use the "mega bass" function on my CD player because the bass response is almost too strong. Trust me, that other reviewer has absolutely no idea what he/she is talking about. Maybe they got a defective unit, but I am VERY picky about sound, and these are superb earphones.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice headphones, lousy service, May 30, 2003
This review is from: Sony MDRG72LP Behind-the-neck Compact Foldin (Electronics)
The G72LP headphones are really nice. I was impressed with the sound and the bass. Additionally, I believe these are the only Sony "street style" behind-the-back headphones that fold up. When it's folded up, it's no larger than a tennis ball.

The absolutely WORST thing about these is the replacement policy for the ear pads. I bought mine a few years ago, and the ear pads have gotten quite worn out and actually a bit torn. The replacements for these flimsy little pieces of foam cost over [$$$]!! That's just absolutely ridiculous and is a sure sign Sony just wants you to buy a new pair of headphones. ... At a cost of that much, my G72s are sitting on my desk, unused for the last several months.

THESE HEADPHONES ARE ONE OF THE BEST I'VE HEARD AT ANY PRICE. HIGHS ARE SMOOTH AND BRIGHT, BUT NOT HARSH AND BASS IS LOW AND CLEAN. THEY FIT LIKE A GLOVE AND ARE VERY COMFORTABLE EVEN AFTER WEARING FOR HOURS AT A TIME. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE HEADPHONES FOR GREAT SOUND AND PORTABILITY.

Pros-

~definetly the bass. if you want bass in your music, you will hear it with these.
~they are very comfortable. they sit very nicely, and snugly on your ears. i had the older street style, the MDR-G57G's, which i found to be a lot of room in the back between my head and the earphones, but this is definetly an improvement. the only reason i say this is because when you lean back on a car seat, or in a plane, they push forward, away from your ears, but in these it really isnt a problem. like the G57's, you can take off the rubber sport bands that help the headphones stay in place while running, and this just makes them all the more unnoticeable to you. they are very light for being larger than the G57's.
~the volume. at 106 Db, they are slightly lounder than the standard of 102. definetly a plus if you are on a train or in the subway, where a lot of noise is generated. even a plane.

Cons-

~the bass. when turned up too loud, the headphones are so well made that the bass stays with the volume, and can drown out the song. on my cd player i have 2 levels of bass, and i used to have it on level 2 all the time, but when i want some loud music, i need to turn it to level one. but this is the onlyt fault, and its not even that big. if the bass was tweaked down a little bit, i would be more than happy to give these 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Headphones while I wait for the Bose, February 29, 2004
This review is from: Sony MDRG72LP Behind-the-neck Compact Foldin (Electronics)
I was quite surprised with the quality of the sound from these headphones. Having bought Bose AM-7 speakers real cheap for my audio set-up at home, I have kinda gotten used to listening to audio of the highest quality. These are easily the best in their class. I don't own many other headphones, my friends have all different brands. I found these to fit the bill perfectly for me, while I wait to earn enough to justify buying the Bose noise cancellation headphones.

Hope this helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Headphones... BUT..., June 30, 2004

This review is from: Sony MDRG72LP Behind-the-neck Compact Foldin (Electronics)
When I first got these headphones, I was simply amazed by the incredible standard of sound quality that was dispalyed. In fact, I started taking these headphones along with my Walkman everywhere I went - and I've pretty much have been doing so for the past seven months... until now.

A short time ago, the sound started breaking up, and the things that I was listening to suddenly started to sound incredibly muffled.

It was at this stage that I realised that the actual adaptor part of the jack had started to break up & fall apart, revealing the internal wires that were connected to the headphone plug.

The only conclusion I could come to was that the headphones had deteriorated from overuse, but I expected a bit more from a Sony product.

Thank goodness there was a 365 day warrantee on these headphones. I took them back to the shop and was told that this model is now discontinued. The shop then gave me a refund to buy a new set of heaphones.

I think the design of these headphones is great, but I was dissapointed with the level of fragility - especially from a Sony product.

For the money, these are good "active" headphones with better sound than can typically be achieved by the small-driver, in-ear headphone alternatives. The behind-the-neck design is useful on runs where you have to wear a hat to protect against the sun or if you just want to keep your hair neat. I have found that 40 minutes is really the most I can stand to wear these before they start causing gradually more intense pain around the ears. The foam pads don't last long and the cord is, actually too long for some work-out applications since you must wind it round and round to keep from catching it while running and yanking the phones off.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kick Ass Sound !, May 12, 2004
This review is from: Sony MDRG72LP Behind-the-neck Compact Foldin (Electronics)
These headphones are phenomenal for the price. As other people have already mentioned, the bass response from these is superb. But unlike many bass heavy headphones, these also sound good for the mids and high notes. There is some distortion if you turn up the volume too high, but this is really a moot point since at that high of a volume you wind up with ringing ears anyway : )

The slightly longer cord is a nice touch. It allows freedom of movement without being so long that it entangles you.

The only downside to these headphones is the comfort level... The soft rubber parts that fit over the tops of the ears have a thin joining line that digs ever so slightly behind the ears. This is really just a minor annoyance, and isn't too noticable unless you wear these for an extended period of time. But that is why I didn't give these headphones 5 stars.

PROS: Nice bass response
Good overall sound
Good value for the money
Behind-the-neck design
Folds up

CONS: Can become uncomfortable after a while

5.0 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect Headphones, May 6, 2004

This review is from: Sony MDRG72LP Behind-the-neck Compact Foldin (Electronics)
Wow. What more can I say? These headphones are definitely a 'must buy' for anyone with a portable audio system wanting a GREAT deal.

Lets begin. The headphones come in a nice package, excellent presentation. The cord length is very generous, works well for nearly all situations. I have yet to run out of slack running around with my Muvo NX clipped to my belt.

The headphones can collapse into a small footprint, maybe a tiny bit bigger than a tennis ball. Very portable, will fit in my cargo pants pocket when folded up. When folded, they stay that way and don't tend to unfold on their own. Vice-versa for when they are unfolded.

Now for the real stuff. The sound quality is EXCELLENT for headphones of this price. The bass response is better than my full ear-cover headphones I use at my computer, and the highs are clear and crisp. Midrange doesn't sound airy or washed out, everything sounds just wonderful. If you enjoy bass in your music, these headphones are for you. A little bit of tweaking on my Muvo and these were definitely one of the best headphones I've ever owned.

To top all this off, they are very comfortable to wear. The soft rubber clips fit snugly, so you can run around in these without issue. Leaning back is a slight issue, you just have to be careful about leaning on the neckband, or else they'll shoot forward. This is a common problem with all behind the neck headphones though, so nothing to worry about.

The earpads are very comfortable, and very soft and pliable. My only concern is the durability of these earpads. They seem like they would just rip on accident sometime soon, or just absorb sweat and disintegrate. Hopefully Sony sells cheap replacements, as I am gonna keep these headphones around for a long time to come.

Summary:

PROS:
-Compact design when folded
-Comfortable
-Excellent sound quality in all ranges
-Tremendous bass output
-Generous length of cord.
-Fits snugly so will not fall off
-Excellent price

CONS:

-Earpads, while very comfortable, seem a bit flimsy
-Leaning back on your neck can push the headphones forward.
-No clip or easy way to wrap up cord when not in use.

Other than those three items, I have absolutely no complaint about these. Definitely money well-spent.

Jared
