So, I was a little worried ordering these headphones at first. I was a sony guy a long time awhile ago then switched to Sennheiser. I recently had the HD203 headphones and frankly was sick of them.
They were uncomfortable, bulky and not sounding great, NO BASS at all.

So, I ordered these for my Christmas gift and was BLOWN AWAY!!

The clarity, the bass, the stage, and the sound is so pure.

First song I listened to was Love Story by Taylor Swift. Heard her voice so clear and the instruments sounded like they were in front of me. Other genres sound great too! Blues, Rap, Classic Rock, etc, etc.

Yes, these may have great bass but they have great sound PERIOD.

The headphones fold flat which I love and the flat cord is awesome. NO TANGLES!!! HUGE FOR ME.

Very easy to stow away in your bag while commuting or traveling as well.

There are no negatives in buying these for the price.

First off I should start that I have the MDR-XB400IP edition of this headphone. The IP stands for iphone/ipad/ipod volume and mic control that is placed on the left side headphone wire. I purchased it off the Sony website during the holidays when they ran it for $34.99 +S. You can get this version on the Sony site or search other sites.

After about 5 days of testing,
Pros:

1. Lightweight and very comfortable
2. Huge sound (very bass heavy which I like)
3. Flat non-kinking perforated wire (right angle connection)
4. Great for the money
5. Earphones don't surround the ear, they sit up against it which helps a lot in hotter climates/environments.
6. Very little or no sound escapes the ear (so people around you don't have to listen too).

50/50
1. Short chord (which is nice for pocket but not for computer)
2. Speakers when turned up "rumble" or vibrate. (I love it because it "feels" more immersive)
3. Intrigued to see how long the ear padding lasts....

Cons:
1. These are not for snobbish Audiophiles. They are for Bassy on the go Audiophiles.
2. The top of the headphone bar could have used a small bar of padding. (might use fuzzy velcro strip to get them a hair higher off the peak of my head.
3. Not as heavily built as other Sony headphones I have had and truly don't really know why the earphone cups turn and click lock the way they do.

The IP version:

The microphone and volume adjusts work perfectly and also gives you a pause option which is very convenient. The price isn't worth it at the current $69.99 price at Sony but would be if it was closer to the $50 mark or if you are constantly on your headphones and iphone (which I am not).

This review is for the average person looking for some quality headphones - not for the audiophile or purist. Too many people on here get WAY too technical with their reviews (in my opinion), while this is good for people who know their stuff, for the average person (me) won't know enough about mid ranges/highs/lows etc. to decipher their reviews. I bought sennheiser earbuds once because all of these reviews that got very technical were saying how great they were. I opened the box in the parking lot to take a listen before driving off and I'll be damned if they didn't sound like the little white apple earbuds. Where was the great bass? Where were these beautiful highs? Where was the great mid-range? Nowhere, because these people get caught up in terminology and not in being able to "feel" and get lost in a good song.

I have purchased/used/returned/etc. tons of headphones. I've used in-ear beats ($150 when I bought), I've used Roc Nation Skull Candy Aviators ($140 or so when I bought), I've had $10 apple headphones, and many more, the gist is, I've had a wide-range of headphones over the years with a wide range of quality. For the past 2 years I've been using my Roc Nation Skull Candy Aviators, which have a great overall sound and have lasted for a long time and could keep going. My Beats (and many of my friend's) sounded fantastic, but broke within a year with normal use. I just recently bough these Sony headphones for gaming/music.

When looking at these, I was questionable, because they are on-ear headphones which I've never had before. On-ear basically means that they press your ears flat and your ears aren't "surrounded" by foam. Despite this, I've had some Sony earbuds that were great, so I decided to give these headphones a chance.

I have not really had much experience with Sony headphones before, but I know they draw consistently good reviews across the board both past and present. I normally do not listen to music "on-the-go" but decided that I should give it a try, and wanted a pair of "cheap" headphones that I can carry around with me and not worry about losing or damaging.

I came across these while I was auditioning headphones at a local Best Buy, and I thought it was a good combination of sound quality, looks, and price. Of course, auditioning at a store can not match plugging it into my own equipment and listening to my own music. So I bought them and gave it a try at home. Normally, I'd think the "Extra Bass" part is just a gimmick (much like the Beats by Dre line of headphones), but I was genuinely surprised at the sound quality of these headphones. The extra bass is there, but it's not what you'd expect. The bass is accurate and not overpowering. It's like having a very expensive sealed subwoofer, versus a cheap ported boomy one, and it's suitable for nearly all genres. And it's not just the bass either, the rest of the spectrum follows suit, and both the mids and highs sound excellent as well, for the price. The soundstage is nice and airy, especially considering that these are closed-phones as opposed to open ones. The unique foam "donut-pillow" earpads feel great, and are well designed.

After auditioning Beats headphones over and over, I still don't understand how people still buy those headphones at their price-point. These Sony headphones sound equally as good as even the Beats Studio's (with better bass quality than the Beats, in my opinion), at 1/10th the price. Sure, these don't have active noise-cancelling like the Beats Studio or Executive, but is that worth the extra $260?
