Excellent quality, great sound,

I bought these a year and a half ago and use them constantly. Being a college student, I'm on the computer often, and always use these. The quality of these headphones is outstanding for the price. Comfort is great; the extra long cord is a definite bonus; sound is great too. Sometimes when listening to a movie in these headphones, I'll be tricked and think a sound is external, because the sound placement and accuracy is that goodI have no complaints, and if you're using a cheap pair of headphones right now, I'd definitely recommend upgrading. Obviously they're not for active/mobile use, but these are great for listening to music and not bothering the roommates. Bass is great; like I said, no complaints

Comfortable headphones,
By These headphones are easy to wear and similar in design to the MDR-XD300. They are very comfortable and lightweight (relatively). They are nice and loud so you don't have to crank up your volume. I have noticed details in songs that I suspected were better than my speakers could reproduce. Cons: These headphones are a bit cheap on the low end. Sure the specs say they are great, but the tuning is such that even though you can tell there is bass there, it just does not hit very hard. The only I get any "boom" out of these is when I play specific low frequency music (techno/electronica/etc...). While I don't like particularly boomy headphones these suffer from what seems to be an imbalance in excellent mid-high reproduction (even a little peaky at times) with mediocre to dissapointing low end intenity.

Well, you're obviously not going to get a professional quality set of headphones for under $20, but these are certainly decent headphones. They were meant to replace an old pair of Sony's that the headband broke on finally after about 5 years. I just got the XD100's today, and I am more than impressed! I am listening to some bass tests right now (Techmaster P.E.B.), and you can hear pretty low notes on them! The bass is incredible for a sub-$20 pair of headphones!I primarily will be using these for casual music listening, and for gaming on my gaming system and at LAN parties. They fit my head really well, too, and are easy adjustable. The only question I have on the headband is how long it's going to last. The adjustable parts are all made of seemingly cheap plastic, and I wouldn't be surprised if it snaps from not all that much abuse. Of course, I try to treat my stuff with care, but for someone who knows that they're going to throw them around a lot might want to look at a different pair. Pros: ** Good sound quality ** Comfortable fit (even after a couple hours) ** Not too heavy ** Long cord (could be good or bad) ** Includes 1/8" --> 1/4" adapter Cons: ** [Seemingly] Cheap plastic ** Headband is not solid (but I personally like that) or padded

I'm going to keep this short and simple for us over 30's crowd.I remember when you used to buy full ear headphones and no matter cheap or not they blocked out ambient noise at least. These things suck! Simple and not so sweet. Trust me they have no volume. I tried them on my PC for movies = not that bad, PC for MP3's = sucked no bass, on my Ipod = sucked again no bass or volume They're under $20 I know but come on Sony. My gut was to go with some Sensheisers but I went with Sony because I love my Sony earbuds but I was wrong. These are being returned as I type this. Shop around and don't be fooled by the brand name or the other reviews on here.

Just bought them and tried them with my portable and non-portable devices and they are very soft, particularly in contrast to the phones I already own (i.e., Koss Portapro). Based on my comparison test, these are extremely low-volume headphones that require you to turn up the volume on your devices and when you do, there's no bass. Incredibly, for huge cups over the ears, as far as surrounding noise seeping in, it's as if you have on no headphones at all. These headphones look great but the looks are deceiving. Sony's just not as reliable for quality as it used to be. They are very inexpensive but as cheaply made as the price indicates. Guess you get what you pay for with these. If you think the price is too good to be true, that's because it is. BTW, I'd give them 2 stars but I'm trying to lower the mean-rating of 3.5 stars.

No Bass,

I came here just to see what others thought of these, because I thought my hearing was off when I heard no bass on them. Fortunately, it's not my hearing. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with these headphones with superb mid range and treble and a shameful lack of bass. I can hear enough to tell that the bass is there. But it really is not satisfying. Even at maximum volume, all it did was crank up the treble and mid range. My suspicion is that the actual speakers in these are very tiny despite the big package, which would explain why they are curiously light for their size. I trusted Sony but I should have listened to the gut feeling I had about the price. Big brand name or not, you will never get more than you pay for.

These headphones have a very low sound quality, I am very disapointed in having purchased this product! They are very inexpensive but I was expecting more from Sony. I wanted to send them back but it will cost me 6 bucks to ship back and in the end I would end up 6 bucks short and nothing to show for it! Oh well........

These headphones are cheap and have great sound quality, but they are very easy to destroy, physically.I got my first pair freshman year of college for maybe $20. They're about ~$12 now. They have a great sound. I remember some real audiophiles raving about their drives. They have a very smooth bass and the high notes come out clearly. They were also nice because I could listen to stuff on my computer while up on my bunk bed. I think I destroyed it by stepping on the phones. I promptly ordered two new pairs. I believe one pair broke because I tripped over the tangled up cord (btw, this has a really long cord) and yanked on it. It's quite an affair and it gets tangled up often. The phones broke off from the headset on the other one. Probably from too much stretching the pieces outward when taking it off. I must be on my fifth pair now. I've been using these for ~ 6 years. If you haven't bought this before, you might be thinking: "Oh, this is no problem, I'll just be less messy/clumsy than this guy". Maybe. But these phones require a lot of "being careful" to not break. You probably want to ziptie the length of the cord you are not using. You probably want a headphone stand. And you probably do want to keep enough slack so that if you trip over it, it doesn't yank on the TRS connector. You may also want to shrink your head. Anyways, I'm a little more careful now, but I reckon my current pair will break in < a year. Which is why I have a back-up pair. They're so cheap and so good it's worth the lack of durability. Oh, each pair comes with a free 3.5mm to 1/4 inch converter, so... I'm never going to run out of those now. ever.

Review from an average user,
This review is from: Sony MDR-XD100 Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
I know that a lot of people are like me and they buy things like sound equipment without knowing any of the details or specifics, so I thought I'd offer that perspective on these headphones. They're decently comfortable to wear except they'd be perfect if there was some kind of cushion under the band that goes across the top of your head. Whenever I'd wear them I'd have to move them every half hour or so because the bands were digging into my scalp. Also, I wear eyeglasses to watch movies so the fit was a little tight where the stems sat above my ears; it always required a bit of adjustment. The cushions sit on the ears very well, though. They cancel out quite a lot of noise without actually cutting off all sound, like if the phone rings. I think the sound quality is really excellent, though like I said, I don't know any of the technical details of sound quality. All I know is that I would often take them on and off just to make sure that I had the speakers turned to 'headphones' because the sound was so clear that I could swear I'd forgotten and it was filling the whole room (I usually watch movies at night so I don't want to wake anyone up!). The cord is very durable and long, though it's the reason why I had to replace them with another Sony pair today. The wire going into the left speaker just all of a sudden stopped working, right in the middle of an episode of Glee. :( But they did last quite a long time, I think. I actually don't remember when I bought them! It has to have been at least a year and half, and for this price I'd call them a great buy for someone like me who doesn't want any fuss or muss and just wants to watch the movie now! :) |
