Personal experience w/Sony MDS-JE520,
By BERK BRYANT (RADCLIFF, KY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony MDS-JE520 MiniDisc Recorder (Electronics)
I was anxious to get a mini disc recorder and this specific model. I had seen ads, seen the product in use at the public radio station in Louisville, KY where I do a show and decided that's for me. I am throughly pleased with mine. It offers so many options. I have at times put cuts from LPs and cassette tapes on a disc to use on the show. Quick location, quick cueing and much better reproduction of sound is a distinct advantage, especially in a DJ role. Aside from the radio use, I have copied some very old tapes I wish to preserve. Tapes that can not be replaced. Interviews gathered over the years with Chet Atkins, Bill Monroe and others. Old programs to keep. I am sure the disc will out last the cassette tapes. The great and useful features of naming the disc, naming each individual cut, single track or complete disc instant erasure, recording timeing (space to go or space used) moving tracts and a host of other useful goodies. I have found mine to be a great asset from both a personal and professional standpoint. I highly recommend this unit.

Good Value for the Price,

I find this unit easy to use and is an excellent compliment to my home audio equipment. Digital inputs and output enable easy exchange with my CD players. This unit seems to work fine with the newer 80 minute minidiscs based on my early trials. With the digital output on this unit, it is easy to make a digital CDR copy of your minidisc of a live recording you have made, so long as you also have a digital optical input on your CD recorder. I found the jog dial easy to use after a little practice. I dislike the fact that line sync recording function from a digital source can only be activated using the remote. Would prefer this function to also be available on the main unit since I use it frequently. This is a small complaint for an otherwise very nice unit.

The perfect way to record.,
This review is from: Sony MDS-JE520 MiniDisc Recorder (Electronics)
The mini disk format is the best way to record. The ability to organize the disk the way you want after you finish recording is a big plus. Also, you can erase the disk at a later date if you decide you don't want what is on it. There is a protection device on the disk so that you don't accidently erase the disk. Last, but not least, is the quality sound the mini disk format gives you. Cassettes will sound so inferior once you start using the mini disk player. Sony is the best one out there. I have read a number of specs concerning the other brands, and this one rates very high. Keep a look out for this one and you will be very satisfied once you purchase it.

I like it a lot,
This review is from: Sony MDS-JE520 MiniDisc Recorder (Electronics)
I bought this in the ever-popular, yet slowly fading MD Bundle set for Christmas. It comes with a portable player too. MiniDisc is great. It's a practical way to record from any audio device. Unfortunately, most people don't have them, therefore they don't have the "trade and borrow" factor as CDs do. (On the up side, there's less worrying about them being stolen) MDs are mainly for personal use though- record on the home unit and take it on the road. I like the fact that you can create your own mixes. Aside from the non-universability standpoint, it's a great product.

May cassettes rest in pieces,

For sometime now I have been thinking of making a switch from tapes, what I really wanted was something that would let me make my own custom selections to listen to. Quality and user friendliness were the catch words and my options were MP3 or the Mindisc. After a visting Amazon.com, I decided that Mindisc was the thing for me. I read some really nice reviews on the MDS-J320 but also took note of its limitations. Finally, I read the review Editorial review and then I decided to buy this baby....the MDS-JE520. After spending a lovely weekend in the company of my new baby and its manual, all I can say is that this is it. Finally I have found the perfect replacement for the cassette tape. Its amazing how much you can do with this baby, very versatile, user-friendly and above all, the quality is just like (if not better) CD. You can make your own programmes, arrange them the way you like, listen to then in whatever order you wish. Basically, this is it....two thumbs up to SONY. But: For those with little fingers or those that are simply obssesed with little gadgets, the remote is big however, it eases entering track names and all.

A Great Component,

This MD player is made by SONY®, the orginator of the MD. Although I use an AIWA for MD on the road this is a great MD component, for the money. Face it. You don't want to spend $400+ for a MD Player/Recorder for just some extra belles and whistles. This is the best choice if you're not a Audio Pro.

The unit I got was packaged very poorly and was damaged in shipment. After taking it apart and repairing it, I got it to play and eject the disks correctly.
