4.0 out of 5 stars Superior Sound!
After I came home from 5 months in Australia to find my Aiwa stereo not working I knew it was time to buy new audio equipment for my room. 3.0 out of 5 stars decent system with quirks
System has decent sound, but some quirks: Odd speaker wiring, 4 wires to each speaker saves Sony $$ on crossover design but you can't upgrade speakers. Antenna is a 3 pin plug, can't upgrade with 3rd party antenna, and reception is only average with included antenna. CD unit on top (can't set anything on top of unit), but not a simple drop in- slide out tray instead. Few...

After I came home from 5 months in Australia to find my Aiwa stereo not working I knew it was time to buy new audio equipment for my room. I like the idea of a shelf system so I began looking for one that was 10 years newer and fit my preferences. I went the stereo route because I wanted a radio and CD player and ultimately a tape deck, although this unit does not have one. I had read several reviews of this model and went into the store (BJ's Wholesale Club of all places) to test it out. Bringing my iPod, I was thoroughly impressed. I went back the next day and purchased this bad boy.

The stereo comes in a huge box but is managable. I was surprised to find the unit overall is very light-weight and set up is easy. Once I finally had it set up, I was immediately impressed with the stellar sound. This thing is LOUD. You get crisp highs, balanced mids, and thumping lows thanks to the additional subwoofer it comes with. I don't think I've heard an iPod sound as good as it does with this unit. As I have read previously, the speaker cords are a bit short. The satellite speakers are fine, but how is a subwoofer expected to be placed on the floor as I want it with such relatively short cords? I'm planning to get some additional cord so I can place the speakers where I want.

I'm very happy with this system and being a bit picky about my audio sound has proven to help me find a great stereo. All kinds of music sound great, from thumping hip hop to reggae to accoustic rock.

This thing is also pretty sleek looking, being a metallic black, modern looking, and light blue accents in the speakers.

Why not a 5?
-Short cord length
-Small display which is hard to see from far away
-No custom EQ, although "rock" mode sounds best
-No tape deck. I admit tapes are out-dated but it would be nice to have the capability to play them

Overall VERY happy with my purchase and definitely recommend this system to and audiophile who wants to pack some punch into his/her audio system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony ec99i Review, October 6, 2009

This review is from: Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W (Electronics)
I would rate this at more like 4.5 stars, though for the price it is definitely amazing.

Pros:
Plenty loud (esp. for a college dorm)
Fairly rugged though i wish the ipod dock was made slightly heavier duty, though i have no problems
Good bass
Cheap price
quick shipping from amazon

Cons:
Only one cd tray
no custom equalizer or manual bass adjustment
I wish it had more options and buttons for some features
wires to the speakers are not that long, nor is the power plug cord
no av jacks

I would recommend this product, especially for the price (160 is a steal). It has been holding up well to loud music for long periods of time and no audio defects or problems so far.

Purchased this last week and I'm quite impressed. Full sound and perfect compatability with my Ipod. I'm not usually a Sony audio fan however I don't think you'll find a better unit for this price.

3.0 out of 5 stars decent system with quirks, March 10, 2010

System has decent sound, but some quirks: Odd speaker wiring, 4 wires to each speaker saves Sony $$ on crossover design but you can't upgrade speakers. Antenna is a 3 pin plug, can't upgrade with 3rd party antenna, and reception is only average with included antenna. CD unit on top (can't set anything on top of unit), but not a simple drop in- slide out tray instead. Few buttons on the main unit, many only on remote (time/alarm/station presetting) so don't lose that sucker! Remote controls the iPod too but unless you can read your iPod display from a distance, only usefulfor skipping and rewinding songs. On the plus side, it's one of the few mini systems with subwoofer- but the Sony only quirks- speaker wiring, antenna, remote functions - mean you have to live with the system as is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the price, October 10, 2009
This review is from: Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W (Electronics)
Overall, I am happy with this purchase. It has its pros and also its cons. It does have a pretty good sound quality. I have noticed every now and then a song will sound a little bit flat. This system CAN kick out good bass though. I have noticed (as another reviewer did) that the bass seems to be best at around volume level 15-18. That is very loud on this system but that is when the sound seems to be most balanced. Every once in a while I will hear some crackling from the speakers when songs get noisy, even if the volume isn't up high. The cord length is a bit short. I also would have liked a custom EQ and almost didn't purchase this system because it didn't have it.

I gave this as a present to my neophew for his birthday & he loved it. He claimed it is awesome. He would like the clock system to stay on permanently than to have to click it periodically.

I picked up a Samsung 32 inch 1080p tv last year and the tv's only drawback was its subpar speakers. I finally got the money together to pick up a set of speakers to fix the problem and decide to get a shelf system rather than a surround sound system (who wants to deal with all the wires, right?). So I got this badboy and, I gotta say, my games and movies have never sounded so good. This system may actually have a little too much power as the bass can approach some crazy levels. If you're in a dorm room or live on top of people like I do then maybe you want to consider the 380 watt model. Seriously, I have yet to turn the volume up past 17 w/o fearing the police will come knocking.

My only complaint is that the system lacks an input for the red and yellow RCA cables. An optical cable input may be unrealistic, but no RCA input was a bit of a surprise. What I did was pick up a headphone jack with the red yellow converter, connect an RCA cable from my tv to the converter, and the sound is just as good.

Otherwise, the system's price, power, Ipod dock that charges my Ipod Touch while I play music, and the overall ease of use results in a very solid four out of five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, February 14, 2010

I was searching for a stereo to replace the one i had before and i bought an RCA from walmat because it seemed to have everything i needed. Needless to say after plugging it in later that night it started sparking from the back, so back to the store it went. I was cautious about this radio because it doesnt have direct Audio jacks tor connecting it to the tv... but here is a little trick for everyone who is looking for this in there stereo. Go to walmart or your local electronics store and get a stereo audio cable. plug it into the pc connection on the stereo and then plug it into your audio jacks on your tv and voila you have it running with your tv. This system rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST DEAL!!!, January 14, 2010
This review is from: Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W (Electronics)
I rarely put the volume on max because my parents would get mad! It is really powerful and I would definitely recommend you to get it. The sound quality is good too! The only problem that I had was my subwoofer was dented but that's because I ordered it from sony style for refurbished at $143. The cords might be a problem to some people who wants to spread out their speakers but I don't really mind it. Basically it's a really good stereo system and it's very sexy so I would recommend to get it.
