Pricey, but it works!,
This review is from: Sony MS-EX4G 4GB Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo (Personal Computers)
I purchased the 4GB Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo as added memory for my Sony PCM-D50 Digital Recorder.
Though I am not a big fan of proprietary memory (SD cards are a better value), Sony makes a fine product, and I am glad I bought the 4 GB memory stick. The HG is fast, and I ended up needing the extra memory while recording concerts in Europe.

I need to shoot bursts of RAW on a Sony DSLR-A700 for dance photography. The A700 has both an MS and a CF slot. The MS HG Duo seems to handle a stream of 18MB RAW files being written much better than the Sandisk Extreme III CF card. Maybe because the HG Duo and the camera were designed to work together from the outset. If you own one of the newer Sony DSLRs with an MS slot, this is THE memory to buy. BTW: The A700 is wonderful for dance photography where flash is banned and the light is abysmal and changing rapidly. Paired with a 70-200 Sigma f2.8 at 3200 ASA, it can track and take beautiful low-noise photos.

Not worth it if you own a PSP,

I own a PSP, and use it to transfer music and videos from my PC to the PSP memory stick. I used to use a 1GB stick, wanted to upgrade to 4GB, read that the HG was sooooo much faster at writing and transfer speed. It's not. I transfered a 175 MB video using PSP media manager to both my 4 GB and my 1GB, to test how long it would take for each stick to do it. Both finished at exactly the same amount of time: 12 minutes. No improvement in transfer speed. I'm not happy with this product at all. If you're going to spend this kind of money for a stick for your PSP, you're better off investing in a 8GB stick. Or just shell out the $60 for a regular 4GB stick. Don't be a sucker. And whatever else you do, DON'T buy a stick off e-bay for $30, those are counterfeits!!! Then you're an even bigger sucker.

I'm using the 4-Gig version of the MS-EX4G as the expansion memory for the Sony PCM-50 stereo audio recorder.
The little Memory Stick has performed flawlessly, recording CD-quality 16 bit/44KHz stereo audio. I haven't pushed it to 24 bit/96KHz but Sony specifies this model MS Pro for the DCM-50 so I assume it could handle the bandwidth. At 16/44 you'll get about 6.5 to 7 hours' worth of stereo audio on this card. Pretty amazing when you think of how many 10" tape reels that used to consume. Reads fine through standard card-readers in XP Pro and Vista Home Premium PC's.

Works perfect, as good as the CF memory. Easier to remove from Sony a700 DSLR camera.
Highly recommend it based on my experience.

I am awaiting a credit on this item. It was defective and I wish to purchase it through some other vendor. If you could expedite this I would appreciate it.

I would not recommend any one to buy the memory sticks from BigBoyToys/Daniel Braun. I am speaking from my experience. I found that the 2 "new" memory sticks I bought from the seller had no manufacturer seals and were preformatted with directories similar to those created by Sony PCMD50.
But most importantly they are not usable on my two Sony PCMD50 digital recorders. I got only "unknown media" with both of my recorder. When I check for the contents of the sticks with a computer, my computer(running Windows XP) could see the directories already inside the stick for a few moment, then the memory stick would disapppear from the computer by itself as if it was unplugged. Very unstable product. I then tried to format the sticks with my recorder. The recorder would show again "unknown media" even though the recorder had made a "format" on the sticks. I reported the results immediately to seller. Seller refused to pay full refund on my purchase despite my immediate complaint about the product. He would deduct $10.00 each piece for "test using" the not new product. This experience with the seller cost me $20.00 + return shipping + (seller's double shipping and handling for 2 sticks mailed at the same time). In the seller's first email, he would ask you to send email directly to him without going through Amazon. So I think he is well planned ahead, and knows all along what kind of products he is selling. |
