I'm happy to relate that this digital recorder has exceeded all of my expectations. As a musician, I can tell you that this device is extremely intuitive and easy to use, much like a digital camera. I quickly learned how to convert several file formats -- wav to mp3, for example -- which means ultra-fast review of my performances. And since recording levels are automatic, I've not had to worry about distortion or poor audio quality. With sophisticated technology of this sort, I no longer need to hire engineers to capture my location performances; it's not rocket science. Kudos to Sony for this excellent product.

I really thought Sony stopped making thier MD players. I always loved them, i had 2 before but then I hopped on the IPOD wagon. MD Players capture the greatest features of every recording/playing medium, by that I mean, The recordability of casette tapes, the clarity and selection speed of cd players, and the ease of use and versatility of mp3 players. And the sound, first off any Sony product will sound wayyy better than anything else. The last mp3 player I bought was a NWZ-A72b, which in my opinion is the hands down best sounding, best feature loaded mp3 player out. The sound on that thing was incomparable, only to Minidisc, which gives you a warm studio sound. And you can record anything you want onto a minidisc, how f==in cool is that? Anything you want you can record. Plus now that MD's are 1GB capacity makes your whole music collection safe in a new home. I think MD players are the best form of music player, you have infinite space, as compared to a 30gb Ipod, just buy the 2 dollar MD's and the music or data (yeah you can put pictures, and stuff from your computer like home movies, etc. onto minidiac.) will never ever end. I needed a better recorder for my guitar because my Sony ICD-UX80 was'nt doing as good, plus the batteries for that thing go quick. This MD player is the size of an actual MD just a lil bigger, it's got the illuminated remote, and the weak electret microphone. It's a really attractive package, picutures do it no justice at all. It looks like something from the future. The sound is amazing!! it's more organic than anything else, and it definitely is great for recording yourself playing an instrument. A real musician should probably have this thing. My only negative with it is that the battery charges in 60 minutes, which is no problem, but it only lasts like 8 hours. And when you use the mic it all about positioning to get the best sound. BUY THIS!!

I just got this hi-minidisc recorder/player the other week and just got my optical cable to use to record using the cd function of my blu-ray player. I am just loving it and once I get Windows XP on my Mac using Parallels, I can use the computer functions that came with it. Of course I can still upload my recordings onto my MacBook. I finally decided to get this portable recorder because I saw that everyone on the subway car that I ride every morning was using either an iPhone, or an iPod. And this is coming from an Apple lover.

I bought the hi-md player because I wanted portability and cd-quality sound. I could do that with an iPod touch 64gb, but how many lossless albums can a person put on that. Not much. Of course the Hi-MD disc is 1 gigabyte, but the whole idea of owning one is to hold the disc in your hand. This player is for audiophiles.

I got this wonderful feeling as I was changing a disc cartridge. You just don't get that with an mp3 player. I did choose the more expensive route, but I chose something that will keep on giving. It even has a replaceable rechargeable battery stick. Replaceable discs(duh). And it is in a sturdy metal casing. It even comes with a cloth carrying sleeve.

I would recommend it to anyone. It also comes with a stereo microphone.

I believe it will stand the test of time. A music player does not need to be popular to be good.

Call me old fashioned, but this player is the last of its kind. And I love it.

2010 and I just bought a MZ-RH1. Why the hell did I do that ?
Because it does record. Simply put. I play guitar, bass, and I want to have a small music player that can record with me. And I am not interested in something that records to a lossy compression format like MP3. The iPod and most players are part of that read-only culture and I want to go back to the read and write culture our societies have known for centuries if not more. Go check the "Larry Lessig's read-only culture" presentation. We must carry players that do record, with no restrictions. We must go back to having the culture be our property and no longer accept an imposed read-only culture from majors. The minidisc is a possible path. I record sounds, music. I record bass lines and guitar lines and exchange the minidisc where this has been recorded using PCM (no lossy compression). We move files to PC and back. The minidisc is heavily used in some creatives circles, and being a niche isn't a problem. But the iPod and read-only culture, thanks but no thanks. Just spent 300 euro on a brand new MZ-RH1, got a MZ-R55, over 100 MiniDiscs here, used them as a journalist for years, as a musician for over 10 years and people are just amazed by what we can do with a recording portable device. My friends have iPods, and read-only players, and they love the MiniDisc. The way I can record anything anywhere, swap disks and the sound quality. DJs and consumers bought vinyl disks, and after years of the press explaining to us the vinyl was dead, dead, and dead well. Here in Paris we got shops full of vinyl disks, DJs use them and people like the sound. The Minidisc is far from dead, and what matters is : a portable, small recorder with PCM no-lossy compression, you carry everywhere and doubles as a media player. USB to connect, drop music and PC files, pictures, whatever. Record, play, create.

using sony mds since 2001 for music the md-mz-510 was perfect. 5+ hrs of music made me very happy.

found myself into OldTimeRadio shows and couldn't stop. the cds are mp3 recorded with 34-45 hrs on each cd. i would load into "real player" and record to minidisc using 5 to 6 disc in lp4 for each radio show title.

i bought in 2007 the mzm200 with its 45 hr discs and now "philip marlow" is now on 1 disc instead of 4.

i don't use the software. this is strictly "line-in" recording.

even with the price, i have 2. one strictly for recording which is always plugged in ready and the other for travelling.

recording "oldies" and "doo wops" where the songs are 2-1/2 minutes long, i have recorded 732 on one md-hd disc. put one in on a friday night and music all weekend non-stop.

all is well and perfect with the mzm200 except the price of the battery - $59.00 and it's short life span. 17 hrs instead of the published 19.

all-in-all it is well worth it.

This little thing is great. For listening, the digital amp sounds really good. Better than that of an iPod which is rated for 2x as much power and many people acclaim. Recording quality is excellent, its like having a cd recorder in your pocket. The supplied micorphone makes really clear recordings. For live shows, as an amateur taper I couldn't be happier with it with the exception that it doesn't pick up as much bass as I would like and the separation is nothing to write home about, but you won't really have much luck finding something as small that does a better job, go and get another plug in power mic or use a power module for a higher quality mic. One con about the mic is that the wire is a little short, but its nothing a 5 dollar trip to the Shack won't fix.The player itself is really small, light and sturdy. It looks great and feels dense and compact in your hand. My only gripes are 1. The FF/FR/Pause/Play switch on the side feels fragile. 2. There are functions on the recorder only accessible from the supplied remote such as track titling and sound processing.The sound processing settings are pretty standard but it does have a feature that i really enjoy. This is the dynamic volume normalizer function. I listen to alot of recordings of live shows and it really helps to smooth out the sound of the recording in times when you can tell someone walked in front of the mic or when the taper moved, etc. I think it makes some recordings sound more consistent. All in all, this is a very versatile little gadget, it fits in your pocket, can be taken anywhere and creates exceptional 'tapes'.

*Updated: I've had it for a few months now and my usual set up at concerts and music festivals is the recorder in my pocket, a longer mic cable up to the mic on my hat. This makes great recordings! I couldn't be happier with it. The tapes you can make sound just about as good as tapes I listen to that were recorded on equipment where the mic alone cost 3x more than this whole package. Voice recording is of very high quality and the mic does a great job of picking up voice from across the room, great for lectures.

Another feature not mentioned often is that this recorder will format old 74/80 minute MD's into HI-MD format. This almost triples the capacity of old MD's which are more affordable than the HI-MD's (about a dollar eighty vs. around 5 dollars for the Hi-MD discs).

This is a great "recorder". If you sing in a choir this recorder gives you clear quality of sound to help you learn your part. Also, it's recording capablities for a meeting is fantastic! I've had mine for a couple of years and it still works great; I use it monthly for meetings. I bought the better microphone and an extra battery and paid a lot more than what it is going for now. It's compact so it fits in a pocket or purse.

This little guy is amazing. I have never recorded with an audio device with such clear quality. I've used all kinds of micro cassettes and digital Dictaphones, but nothing - nothing! - compares to the crisp stereo sound the MD produces. It is a little delicate, but well built, and the software for transferring audio to a Mac is simple and works well. (Note, you'll need to use a different tool to edit files if you are interested in doing so. The software for Mac only transfers the files). I wouldn't use this as an iPod substitute, but for recording live music, interviews, lectures, etc., I have not found anything better.

Basically I bought this unit more for the playback rather than recording. I wanted a portable cd player and have been losing CDs to scratches. I chance upon this md player and found that the md is very durable... I really wish sony didn't pull the plug on md. Md should take over CDs as the main selling media as durability is there. Bottom line is that it is so great sounding. Now I back up my CDs to wav and transfer it to as many mds as I can. Really love the sound!!! I could use my iPhone and iPad as wav players as well but somehow I feel more inclined to use this to playback my music.

The unit is very, very light compared to the MZ-RH10. Pretty intuitive controls and works as it should. I highly recommend it if you need a unit that records.
