2.0 out of 5 stars Basic Reader Behind the Times
The unit has let me down. Especially for higher capacity cards (>=4GB). Sony support mentions that the memory card isn't good for 4GB or larger cards. SDHC cards also suffer under this reader. You're better off finding a more modern memory card reader.

I purchased this product about a month ago, and the card reader is small, lightweight, and pleasantly designed with a brushed aluminum top. However, I recently obtained an 8GB SDHC card that this cardreader could not detect. It is very difficult to find information regarding SDHC compatibility for this device, and reviews for a (nearly) identical product released in Europe claim SDHC compatibility. I eventually stopped by a local store to pick up another cardreader which was able to read the SDHC card. Unless I got a defective Sony 17-in-1 cardreader, this device does NOT read SDHC cards.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm very happy...., March 1, 2007
This review is from: Sony 17-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader MRW62E/S1/181 (Personal Computers)
...with this purchase. I was getting frustrated with getting photos off of my CF card through the camera, and decided to give a card reader a try. I picked the Sony because of its size: the SanDisk's (which is a fantastic company) equivilant card reader was just too large for what I was hoping for. The Sony card reader is small enough that it fits inside of an Altoids tin, so it's easy to stow away inside your computer bag or where ever else you may keep it.

The best thing about the reader is simply how efficient it is. Instead of needing to drag your digital camera(s) around, you can just carry this thing around. My photos transfered to my laptop WAY faster and with a lot less holdups that through the actual camera, making for a much smoother downloading process altogether. This thing fits 17 different kinds of memory cards: virtually every kind.

Note that on the packaging it says that it takes CompactFlash I and II cards. I was a bit nervous about this because I use a CompactFlash Extreme III card - but I'm happy to say that it worked just fine with that card as well.

Excellent product from an excellent company - thanks Sony!

This device worked flawlessly on an iMac and MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.2. I purchased it for a family member and was very impressed by it's small size and ease of use so I'll be getting one for myself as well, replacing my Sandisk reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does It Job Well, October 10, 2007
This review is from: Sony 17-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader MRW62E/S1/181 (Personal Computers)
I bought this Sony reader because it seems a little better constructed than all the no-name brands out there. This one reads a few more types of memory cards than some of the others. I wanted one that did CF cards.. Many do not anymore. I use the reader on a iMac and it seems to read / write fast. I have no regrets about this purchase. It looks good enough where I just leave it hooked up all the time too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice aluminum design touch., December 13, 2007

Update:
My older 2007Sony card reader does not read the newer SDHC SD card that are like 4gb, but the newer Sony Card reader model of 2010 is listed as SDHC, check the model.

Previous:
My card reader is usually very close to my monitor, since I do take a few pictures and download them quite often. So the aluminum top plate makes it a one of the best looking card reader out there. It is more compact and smaller then my last Belkin card reader that still works, that couldn't read anything over 1 GB of memory. Sliding my various cards into this device is a lot smoother then on the Belkin reader. A little yellow light is always on. Come with some software that name your drive letter that I didn't install.

Performance
This USB2 is noticeably faster then the Belkin card reader, which is also USB2. I got a 512mb, 1 GB, and 2 GB SD cards and one memory stick and they all worked fine. It uploaded my 2GB SanDisk Ultra II to computer at an average of 6.01mb a second and drops to 4.8mb per second the other way around. On my 1GB generic brand, it upload speed is 5.5mb per second based on Vista info screen.

A little pricey, but it looks formal on my desktop with a solid construction and worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good reader, July 24, 2008

I've had a dozen card readers over the years. They are of two camps: the cheapies I get from Ebay and Hongkong, for next to no money; I've not had one of these (yet) work on all slots. They usually will read one or several cards, not all. Inevitably the one I need doesn't work. Then I've had a few decent readers which I've handed off to my kids, thinking I'd get another nearly-free Hongkong special. It seems I never learn. This time, I bit the bullet, paid some money, and it's true, "you get what you pay for." Glad I did.
