5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent portable USB drive, September 17, 2002

This review is from: Sony Micro Vault 64 MB USB Removable Storage Media (Personal Computers)
This is the first USB key chain drive I have purchased. At home I have a windows 98 desktop and at work I have a windows 2000 notebook. The drive worked very well in both environments (I had to install drivers for windows 98 - my windows 2000 notebook found it automatically). The USB drive is very fast I work with it plugged in to my notebook and store content on it directly and it seems about as fast as my hard drive. For my purposes 64 meg is the right amount of memory but others may need more. I think this is a great piece of technology and makes floppy disks obsolete. I was emailing work docs from one machine to the next but this is much easier for files > 2-3 megabytes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, September 26, 2002
This review is from: Sony Micro Vault 64 MB USB Removable Storage Media (Personal Computers)
I have the 128mb Micro Vault. It's great for carrying reasonable size files from home and work, and much less trouble that fooling with CDWR. File transfer is remarkably fast. Just plug into a USB port and it's recognized by Windows 2000 and XP as a drive. I had a slight problem with my WinME machine, in that some of the driver files ME was looking for to install the Micro Vault were not on my hard disc, and I had to extract them from the ME CD cab files. Works fine now. Prices are bound to go down and capicity will go up, so I expect these key drives will become popular.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality and Design, December 23, 2002
This review is from: Sony Micro Vault 64 MB USB Removable Storage Media (Personal Computers)
I purchased my Sony Microvault 64MB about four months ago and have used it often to move files from one device to another when other options of moving them were not available (network, email, floppy, etc.). I also keep a few files permanently on the Microvault so that I have access to them whenever I need them. In general, I am very happy with the concept of a portable "key" drive.

However, I have three complaints on the Sony Microvault. First, it is a bit larger than I expected it to be, and is larger than other brands of similar capacity. Second, a standard metal key chain will not easily fit in the plastic loop provided for it. Third, the device is not sturdy enough to handle the everyday wear and tear on a key chain. The plastic silver outer casing on my Microvault has broken away from the interior casing, exposing the internal memory chip.

The primary appeal of this product for me was the ability to carry this around on my key chain for use wherever and whenever I needed it. Because the plastic casing is broken, I am reluctant to keep it on my key chain, thus eliminating the primary benefit of this item for me.

While I like this device in general, I am reluctant to recommend the Sony Microvault based on its durability.
