Honestly, I haven't been this pleased with a tech product in a long time. I had a Vizio Co star before this, and the difference is night and day. Setup was a snap. The lack of difficulty may be related to the fact that my TV and home theater system are both Sony products. The fit and finish on the product is amazing. The buttons are in the right places, the keyboard is backlit and works nearly flawlessly, and the trackpad works very well. There is a slight lag in the remote's responsiveness if it hasn't been used for a while, but this is a minor issue. Settings options are thorough and allow for a great deal of customization to tailor the system to your particular setup. The apps are useful and available at the touch of a finger or a voice command. They enhance the TV experience without getting in the way.

Key differences between this and the Co star:
*Backlit keyboard
*Much sleeker remote
*Indicator light that shows the box is on
*TV signal pass-through even when the box is off
*Mic built into the remote
*This box actually seems to run a little cooler

Vizio has made a nice start, but the Sony product is more mature and it shows. Yes, the price is higher, but you get what you pay for.

First I grew up in IT and own an IT business, however my wife who is a Sociology major set up the unit with-in about 10 minutes So I will write the non tech first and then the tech portion below for those interested in the details.

So a little background, I have not had regular TV other than OTA (over the air) sense 2002. I've ran LinuxMCE, XBMC, Playon, you name it. In the last few years I moved from XBMC to Plex as all my data is on a "server" desktop (AMD 2.4 core, 16gb ram,) running on a WD Net 650 N Network. Regular Hulu user, Amazon Prime and Netflix User.

This thing is easy! I had my wife do all the setup, connect the Optical (SPDIF) cable to our 2000/2001 5.1 Yamaha Receiver and HDMI out to tv. Plugged in and entered wifi password and google account (Like gmail or what you use on your phone). Then setup the IR blaster, this little device allows you to put your remotes away and use only the remote included in the Sony. Found the codes within 2-3 minutes for the receiver and tv and now don't have 3 remotes on the table.

Prompted to do the updated to latest firmware, rebooted and then prompted to updated the apps. After that (10 min max) she was logging into Amazon Prime, Netflix, Plex. Included remote is awesome, the touchpad is not slick, but not super grainy, has scrolling features (no multi touch) and a full QWERTY backlit keyboard on the back. So for better quality, more selection of apps and optical audio with 1080p this thing rocks. Within 30 minutes my senior family who is completely computer illiterate (can't even use the original kindle) they can be browsing the internet and watching shows.

DO NOT buy this device unless you like throwing away money.

Google and Sony have abandoned the GoogleTV brand like a rotten potato. I just bought mine at BestBuy to discover a shell of a product with outdated apps, unusable features and only disinterest and a complete lack of support from Sony support staff. Included are:

- A browser which is 4 years out of date, resulting in faulty web navigation, broken features, and repeated warnings about security failures. No capability to handle pop-ups, which end up appearing in full screen with no way to close them except to turn the unit off entirely and reboot.

- One MASSIVE system/firmware update is required at start which btw does nothing useful except supposedly make this pull of obsolete software more stable. Can't even set the correct location or time for the unit, as whatever software was meant to do that seems to be looking for a nonexistant database. Unless you are clever enough to figure out how to abort this REQUIRED step, you'll never even finish the setup stage.

- Sony support couldn't be more rude. They are biding their time until this product vanishes. I could understand it if it was an old piece of technology that was being phased out, but stores are still selling these brand new! I am writing to the BBB, not because I'm concerned about my money which I can get back from Best Buy, but it is the principle of this behavior, trying to squeeze out a few more bucks by presenting a failed and abandoned product to the unsuspecting published.

Both Sony and Google are now on my you-know-what list for this. I've been reading that people are looking into grounds for a lawsuit.

This box is my first foray into the Google TV lineup, but certainly not my first android device. I bought this primarily for watching Slingbox streams, and it does the job exceedingly well. A few things to note however that I didn't seem to find in the other reviews before buying:

As of the time of writing this review (10/30/2013):

Hulu Plus is not compatible with this device.
HBO Go is not compatible with this device.
MAX Go is not compatible with this device.
Starz Play is not compatible with this device.
ENCORE Play is not compatible with this device.
MOVIEPLEX Play is not compatible with this device.

This is due to the lack of a digital rights management system built into honeycomb. There are DRM systems built into Jellybean, which is an update that is rumored to be slated for this device.

Sadly, none of the web-based versions of these apps work in the browser either. This is primarily due to the version of flash loaded with this device (10) that is standard with the Honeycomb operating system. Most of these apps require flash 11.

The problem with Jellybean though, is that it does away with flash altogether, forcing app writers to rewrite the mobile and tablet versions of their apps to support Google TV, something that may not happen very quickly. To date, only one Google TV device has Jellybean, and that is an LG Smart TV.

This is going to become a problem for me when the update hits the Sony boxes; the proper working of Slingbox streams on this device relies on Flash, and a new Slingbox app will have to be written to support Jellybean Google TV's. Sideloading flash is not an attractive option, as reports from other users have stated that performance suffers.
