5.0 out of 5 stars love this monitor
We started out with the Fischer-Price Soothing Dreams monitor upon the recommendation of a friend. Their daughter loved the light show (as did ours) but they didn't mention the static and noise were so bad they couldn't use it when they were asleep. We had the same result, as did a third friend. When we went back to the store to look at other monitors....

2.0 out of 5 stars "Out of Range" alarm ruins this monitor
I selected this monitor because of the nine channels to ensure that it wouldn't conflict with my older child's monitor. The sound quality is good and it is very sensitive but we have had two problems with it.
The first problem is enough that I would recommend NOT buying this monitor. Either the range alarm is WAY TOO SENSITIVE or the range is way too short. My...

We started out with the Fischer-Price Soothing Dreams monitor upon the recommendation of a friend. Their daughter loved the light show (as did ours) but they didn't mention the static and noise were so bad they couldn't use it when they were asleep. We had the same result, as did a third friend. We found a name we could trust in home electronics, Sony. The microphone in this is ultra sensitive - will even pick up sounds in the next room, and is crystal clear. You can hear the smallest creaks of someone sneaking into check on baby. It has a feature that seems to figure out what decible is background noise, and shuts off for that, and only back on for a louder sound. I sleep peacefully in this mode and wake up when she is just starting to wimper a little. The only downside is when she is talking quietly to herself it registers it as background noise, and I have to reach over and switch it to "everything" mode to hear how she is doing.
Having the internal battery that charges when plugged in (like your phone) is a great feature for taking it around the house or yard.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Monitor, March 22, 2003

We spent a lot of time looking at different monitors and decided on the Sony Baby Call in part due to the great reputation of Sony. I am so happy with this monitor. It has 9 channels to switch between, although we have never had to switch ours. The reception is very clear (and we live in a townhouse developent with lots of babies with monitors). What I really like is the fact that you can put this monitor on standby mode and it remains completely silent until the baby makes a noise and then clicks on. This makes it much easier to sleep at night especillay since my baby has music in our room (which the monitor filters out, while still picking up every cough and grunt she makes). The range is great, it doesn't interfere with our phones or electronics. We also looked at the Sony Baby Call 27 channel with rechargable batteries, but we don't need that many channels and we use rechargable batteries anyway. In either case, this monitor comes with an AC adapter plug so we keep the monitor plugged into the wall of the room we are in so it doesn't eat batteries. We are very happy with this monitor!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Monitor!!, March 10, 2003

This review is from: Sony NTM-900 900MHz BabyCall System! (Electronics)
We registered for (and received) a Fisher Price Soothing Dreams monitor before reading the reviews on this website. It was awful - just as the other reviews state, there is a constant "clicking" in the receiver and the sound is very muffled and low quality. I was shocked that Fisher Price can get away with marketing the Soothing Dreams product as a "monitor" - what a joke! We exchanged it for the Sony Baby Call monitor and LOVE IT! This really is an excellent monitor - the sound is crystal clear and there is NO static or background noise, only the noise of the room. My husband and I were thrilled with it and have absolutely no complaints - well worth the money AND it comes with rechargeable batteries in the receiver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent monitor!, November 7, 2003

We love this monitor! It has great reception with very little background noise or static. We have cordless phones and wireless internet, which don't seem to interfere with it at all. The battery life is great, and the voice activation feature works well. It allows you to have the monitor on without having to hear every car driving by and dog barking in the background, and it seems to extend the battery life.

We initially registered for the Fisher Price Soothing Dreams monitor based on the glowing recommendations in the Baby Bargains book. Our big mistake was unpacking it and throwing away the packaging before the baby was born. Once we used it, it was horrible--we could barely hear the baby, it clicked and buzzed constantly, and burned through batteries. Now we're stuck with it.

Battery life is important to consider, as you'll likely leave the AC adapter plugged in somewhere, like your bedroom, and want to use the receiver on battery when you're in other rooms.

5.0 out of 5 stars All of the quality, most of the features, September 23, 2003

This review is from: Sony NTM-900 900MHz BabyCall System! (Electronics)
I looked at several baby monitors and bought three of them! Having used all three of those, this Sony system by far the best. This system has five features that should be standard for any system you consider. These include:

1) As many channels as you can afford. This system comes with 9 channels with enough variation that you SHOULD be able to get a clear signal. I even tested this one in my 9-floor office building and it worked fine, with multiple wireless connections that could have interfered (its hard to get an FM radio station in my office!). For those in apartments, Sony has a system that comes with 27 channels to consider for $10 more (comes with re-charge capabilities too).

2) Ambient filter. Most monitors come with an always-on feature that picks up every sound in and out of your baby's nursery. This system allows you to choose a sound-activated selection that filters out the ambient noise (fans, humidifiers, etc) and only registers when there is something to hear. For those of us that a little more paranoid, you can choose NOT to use the filter and hear everything...CHOICES ARE GREAT!

3) Proximity alarm. Ever worry that your monitor isn't working or that you are out of range? This system constantly updates the monitor so that if you are out of range, run out of batteries, or just forget to turn on the baby-side monitor, it lets you know. No more asking, "Did I remember to turn it on?"

4) Water-resistant. This is just logical for a $40 investment.

5) Curved, damage resistant antennae. The antennae on this is so durable, your dog could use it as a chew toy (and may try!).

Comparison to other models: I have also used the Fisher Price Calming Vibrations, which is not worth the cardboard box it came in. It constantly makes noise and is static-y, like most all of the Fisher Price models. It went back to the store very quickly. Finally, I also have the Safety 1st Crystal Clear monitor , which is inexpensive but works great if you are in single home that isn't too big (about a 400' range). But it doesn't have the ambient filter like this one. I use the Sony as my primary monitor and the Safety 1st as my travel-monitor, since its so small and light.

Originally, I wanted to get one with a two-way feature so that we could talk back to the baby, but then I thought...uh...what exactly would I say...be right there? Bottom line, this is the best model for your money. And anyway, would you buy a cordless phone from a baby-item manufacturer? Then why buy a cordless monitor from one?

5.0 out of 5 stars third time's a charm, May 8, 2003
By
This review is from: Sony NTM-900 900MHz BabyCall System! (Electronics)
We bought and returned two different Fisher-Price models because of static and background noise. The last time, I chose this one because of the Sony name and I am so glad I did! Having nine channels (versus the Fisher-Price's two!) makes such a difference if you have cordless phones, etc. that are causing interference. This model is the same price as the Fisher-Price model that comes with two receivers. You only get one receiver, but it is well worth it. Dad can even take it outside (with a belt clip included!) when he does yardwork. The sound is crystal clear and we are ecstatic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than the Rest!, April 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony NTM-900 900MHz BabyCall System! (Electronics)
After trying the Fisher Price Sound & Lights monitor, I was so frustrated to find that all I could hear was the static & screeching, and NOT my son's cries. I brought it back, and had an even harder time finding another monitor. Luckily, I decided to spend the extra $10 for the Sony Baby Call Nursery Monitor, and it is well worth it! I can hear the baby clearly from anywhere inside of our house (especially if he is upstairs and we are downstairs) Even better, the monitor is long range, we can even us it outside of the house doing yard work or other things. I would recommend this to everyone! It is worth it..just like having your baby next to you, even when he is not.

5.0 out of 5 stars No complaints here!, April 8, 2005
By
This review is from: Sony NTM-900 900MHz BabyCall System! (Electronics)
This is a very nice monitor. I bought it for our second child in the hopes of having more success than I did with other monitors in the past. I would recommend this monitor for the following reasons:
1- The monitor has a built in AC adapter. I have had BAD LUCK with the rechargeable kind & would recommend to avoid them until the manufacturers get all the bugs worked out.
2- It has 9 channels so it doesn't interfere with our other monitor.
3- I have had no problems with the range. We live in a 1 story 2000 sqft house
& my advice if you do have a problem would be to put the receiver in a different spot.
4- I LOVE the fact that the power switch is separate from the volume.
5- The voice activation setting is also a wonderful option.
6- It is very sensitive & unlike our other monitor, it is clear. No static.
All in all, it has been a great purchase & I finally found a monitor that works.

We love this moniter. The voice activated feature is awesome - it filters out everything but her voice and cries. We can play music or white noise in her room and the moniter only puts forth her cries and gurgles. Its like magic! It does play some interference when the microwave is on or the cell phone is being used, but I think all moniters do this a bit, and its really minor with this one. It comes with two electrical hook ups so it doesnt eat batteries. We love it - it works great!
