I previously had Sony DRU-840A DVD burner installed in my system but it stopped working after one year, now I have bought new Sony (again sony) AD-7240S and I have burned few DVD-R discs, it's working fine, no any noise nor any data write error, VEry easy to install, and It has very fast burning speed. however I usually burn DVD-Rs at 8x.
This is the best DVD burner for this price.
I suggest this to everyone.

Nothing negative to say; this is a top rated product and preformed exactly as expected. It is an OEM / bare bones model so you need your own cables but that shouldn't be a big deal.

This was very well packaged by amazon with a custom foam insert and plenty of padding.

This drive works well. I've burned few hundred DVDs and CDs without much difficulty. I've only had rare issues with discs sporadically. This may not be the drive but the blank media? Setup/installation was a snap. The speeds are reasonable. I've had no major issues.

This is the only DVD burner I've bought, with the exception of the slow pig that came in the laptop.
System has 8 15K scsi drives, XPsp2, and this is the only SATA device.
Burns a ripped/shrunk single layer DVD in 5 - 6 minutes from an iso file. Never have done DL DVDs but will try 1 this afternoon. Uh... <cough!> basically I hadn't realized it did DL until I brought up the specs...
I've seen it spike to 17x - 19x later in the burning (toward the outer edge of the disk).
Occasionally it burns fast enough to suck out the buffer causing a fractional pause and lower 'calculated' speed.
Burns with many different Utils but I generally use ImgBurn these days; fast, no frills, no problems.

Ease of installation? C'mon, 4 screws, 2 cables, and Windows uses it's own drivers.
Ease of Use? Does what the programs and I tell it to, fast with no backtalk. That's ease to me.
Reliability? So far so good. ~14 months now. Some days it gets quite a workout.

Looking for another for an ex for Xmas (heh, sorry).

I very carefully transferred this drive from a mini tower to a mid tower after it had been in service for only a few weeks. I'm a computer professional and have built countless systems; I am in no way rough or careless with components. With only this minimal handling, the keyed portion of the drive's SATA power connector broke as the cable was being removed, thus rendering the drive unusable. This is the second Optiarc dive with which I've experienced mechanical problems in two years. The previous drive's Eject button stopped working after about 11 months of service.

The Sony-Optiarc EU site states that the warranty period for these drives is two years, but that warranty replacement must be handled through the dealer! Good luck with that; I purchased it via ZipZoomFly.com, which appears to be out of business.

No more Optiarc for me. Sticking with Asus or Lite-On.

Hmm ... I wonder if Sony named Optiarc after the "Optigrab" in Steve Martin's film The Jerk ...

I work at a recording studio and burn audio CD's for final glass mastering every day. I use two burners regularly and the LG burner that came with my Alienware computer failed after two years. My other drive is an older Plextor that is still working without error. I was tempted to replace the LG with another Plextor, but read many reviews of the Sony and thought I'd give it a try.

It's only been a few weeks, but have burned 40-50 discs with rock solid performance. I ran tests for C1, C2 and CU errors right away on my first burns. I burned a 25 minute audio disc and a 78 minute disc, both at MAX speed and at 24x speed. All discs came out with ZERO C2 and CU errors. C1's are common and not an issue, but those were few. I still burn my critical masters at 24x speed, but even at MAX, the performance is solid. I couldn't be more pleased to have the same quality as my Plextor drive, but at a cheaper price.

Got this as an upgrade over my old Lite-on pata drive. Worked fine for about a week. Read/Burn all was okay. Then into the second week it began not reading DVDs it had previously burnt, then it progessed to the point it would refuse to read any media whether it was CD/DVD, burnt/original or blank. Really disappointed but hopes were never high with Sony. Lite On has been much better for me so I'm reverting to that brand from now on.
