5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Laptop
I would highly recommend this laptop. It has many great features on it, from the wireless connection, speed, memory to the DVD burner. Sony has kept the quality in this product like all Sony products.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware of the IGP-345M chipset!, September 6, 2004
This review is from: Sony VAIO PCG-K27 Laptop (3.06 GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I have is another Sony Vaio with the display chipset ATI-IGP-345M
which uses shared system ram for video. When I attemped to run some games, the first one complained about the sony drivers level (which are dated mid-2003). When I contacted ATI, they told me that I should contact the system manufacturer. When I contacted Sony inquiring about the availability of updated video drivers, they told me that they only support software that comes bundled with the notebook, and nothing else. (!!).

Not to mention that ATI's IGP-345M linux support is muddy at best (ATI should be ashamed for their lack of linux support). That's the reson why I am giving my Sony vaio to my father as a gift, and getting a new notebook for myself. This time, I'll be very careful to choose one with a REAL video chipset (a full Radeon 9700 or 9800) with dedicated video memory instead of this "shared ram" gimmick.

I bought this laptop about a year ago and it is great! Awesome graphics for a laptop! I'm not sure what others are doing to their machines, but I have had no trouble finding any drivers or anything of the sort. The screen is beautiful! The only set back of this laptop is the noise, but this can be reduced to almost nothing by adjusting the power controls. As far as the weight of the thing goes, unless you plan on standing and holding it out in front of you the weight isn't an issue, hence the term "laptop" At any rate, great machine, good graphics, AWESOME screen, and powerful.

1.0 out of 5 stars bait and switch, October 10, 2004
This review is from: Sony VAIO PCG-K27 Laptop (3.06 GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I thought I was ordering a computer for $750.00, but when the order came back, its price was $1,764.96. I have tried to cancel this order, but don't know if I was successful. There is no way that I can see to contact amazon.com accounting department to clarify this portion of my otherwise book order. My rights were taken away, and I did not have the information on the real price of this item until I got my confirmation. If I don't hear from Amazon.com, I'll have to cancel my order via my credit card. Does anybody know how to contact these people??? Helpless @ mehlman@patmedia.net.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not strong enough? Too strong!, August 31, 2005
This review is from: Sony VAIO PCG-K27 Laptop (3.06 GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I have not seen an adequate review of this product yet, so I will try to write one: Since this thing uses 19.4 volts to run, it is a power hog. It blows the circuits on something like an airline seat plug-in. You can't find a 12v adapter for one, because it's too powerful and no one makes one. I have a C/D drive setup with a 20/60 GB capacity that is just senseless. Put the whole thing on one drive. The fan sounds like a runaway locomotive. Windows XP Home edition? Puhleez! Half the rest of the "pre-installed" software was trial editions that expired if you didn't buy them! It's heavy! It's huge. Good screen, great wireless performance but there are better choices!

I bought this model (Pentium 4, 512 MB Ram, 80 GB Hard Drive) this last year to repleace a previous notebook model that was stolen. I use it at home in place of a desktop model. Very happy with it. Only complant is the sound quality when playing CDs or DVDs.

Very good in a lot of aspect. Design, power, amazing screen.
Now the important downsides:

- supports only WinXP (no Win2000 / 2003, no linux)
- poor graphics drivers, and no possibility to update them (not compatibly with standard ATI ones)
- poor other drivers

Beside that, it is a good value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for this notebook on a large network!, November 13, 2004
This review is from: Sony VAIO PCG-K27 Laptop (3.06 GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought this notebook in august, and was using it in school! Well, after 2 days, it started crashing like mad!!!! and that's because of it's operating system(home edition!)! u might consider a different notebook if you're going to use it on a large network, beccause it'll crash if the processor is not working! so in order to prevent it from crashing, i run a media program all day long!!!!!!!!!! so ask for the professional windows edition!
Apart from that, it's a pretty solid notebook! BUT TOOOO heavy!! i tried carrying it to the library twice, and after each journey, i'm yearning for a massage! it weight's about 12 lbs!!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective Hard Drive, BEWARE, December 8, 2004
This review is from: Sony VAIO PCG-K27 Laptop (3.06 GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I purchased the 60 Gig Hard drive version of this computer in July, and on December 5th the hard drive broke. It will not mount and makes grinding and clattering noises. I have lost data. This is not a quality product. I am now returning it to Sony (Sony Event#E26545346). I thought Sony made quality products and I paid a premium for their notebook compared to other notebooks and look at what I get. I am very unhappy. I wonder if this is more than just an isolated incident. I will never buy a Sony product again and do everything I can to stop others from buying Sony's products.
So if you like your hard drive unexpectingly crashing and like to lose data then go ahead and roll the dice and buy this computer.
