Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Built for notebook users whose situations and requirements dictate extreme portability, Sony's TR series of mobile computers are amazingly petite yet satisfactorily powered. Demanding folks who need top-end speed and all the capabilities of a desktop should look elsewhere, but those who consistently work in remote environments or simply appreciate the convenience of extreme miniaturization would do well with this, the Sony VAIO PCG-TR1AP Notebook PC.

At the heart of the VAIO PCG-TR1AP resides a 900 MHz ultra-low voltage Pentium M processor with an amazing one MB Level 2 cache. Sony has matched this processor with 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel 855GM graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. Though this setup won't effectively drive the latest 3-D-based games or keep up with the current crop of desktops, the unit features advanced Intel Centrino mobile technology for improved performance and reduced power consumption over similar speed non-Centrino units, and as such will easily handle lengthy sessions with typical mobile applications.

The VAIO PCG-TR1AP features an adequate 30 GB hard disk for your files and applications and a versatile CD-RW/DVD-RW combo drive through which you can archive data, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest movies. You'll monitor your work through a crystal clear 10.6-inch wide (1280x768) TFT display with XBRITE technology, and enter data via an integrated 83-key keyboard and electro-static touchpad.

At a mere 10.6 by 7.4 by 1.4 inches and just 3.1 pounds., the VAIO PCG-TR1AP is extraordinarily compact. Yet it's packed with useful amenities, including two high-speed USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire port, a high-speed RJ-45 Ethernet connection, and wireless LAN. Shutterbugs will appreciate the built-in low-resolution 640x480 swivel camera, while businesspeople will welcome the bundled version of Microsoft's high-end Windows XP Professional operating system.

Battery life is estimated at an impressive 2.5 to 7 hours with the enclosed standard cell and 3.5 to 11 hours with a separately available large capacity battery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ultra laptop on the market!, August 11, 2003
By Home Movie Buff "sinoue" (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This laptop has made me way more effective!

If you're the busy Silicon Valley type needing to VPN into work to check email, etc. this is the laptop for you.

The WiFi works great and the sexy small size makes it really easy to log into work from almost anywhere. The screen is the best on the market - super bright and high res. The battery life is so long I don't mind cranking up the screen brightness to match the level its normally at when plugged in.

If you need to log into corporate domains or use Cisco as your VPN be sure to get the Sony TR1AP (XP Pro) model instead of the TR1A (XP Home). I bought the TR1A and trying running the Win XP Pro upgrade option to no avail (kept crashing at 34%). I ended up having to trade it back in and ordering the TR1AP to get Win XP Pro on it.

The 30 GB hard drive is partitioned into 2 15GB drives. I'm guessing they did this for the video capture option so you wouldn't accidently fill up your boot drive.

The Pentium M 900mhz CPU seems pretty speedy. I'm thinking about getting the memory upgrade to 1 gb since that'll probally make a bigger impact than anything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars After a month of use...., August 13, 2003
By "skiman_nyc" (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I have to affirm how wonderful this laptop is... It may not be the right choice for someone who wants impressive 3D gaming, or a large screen with large font, but I have had not complaints at all. But then again, I like the small screen, the high resolution, the high contrast, the small keyboard (which some people think is too mushy, but I like b/c there is not much travel). This thing travels well, I don't need to bring the AC adapter along when I have been getting a solid 4 hr battery life. The speed is quite good. I have not upgraded to 1 GB of RAM yet, but so far I have been able to process MRI images and 3D reconstructions without a problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good small laptop, but too expansive!!!, September 16, 2003
By A Customer
The Fujitsu has a simular product, and it is about $300~$500 less than this SONY TR1AP (of course not as stylish). I really like SONY TR1AP's small and stylish design, but this laptop is way too expansive for it's feature.

I think I will wait for a little while for the price to drop then I will change it to a 5 stars.
