This review is from: Sony PCM-M1 - DAT recorder (Electronics)
My lady (a piano teacher and performer) and I bought the PCM-M1, along with an Audio Technia 822 microphone (not the best, but great "bang-for-the buck") nearly a decade ago. She, and others, have always commented on how good the sound is when listening to a playback on a good stereo system. (I use the Sony RMR-D100 unit to import digitally into my PC, and edit [and write CDs] with Sonic Foundry [now Sony] "Sound Forge" software.) I doubt that one can get much better quality outside of a studio. At the local Piano Club, we record using Asian "knock-offs" of industry standard, phantom power, condensor microphones, and write directly to CDs. Both that system and ours provide excellent quality. Any differences are clearly attributable to the microphones; and, I have no preferences between the sound quality of the two systems. I prefer the DAT tape when a program might last more than 74-80 minutes -- I have plenty of room (2 hours) on the DAT tape and do not have to switch CDs mid-performance. I am very happy with this PCM-M1 based system.
