4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT REMOTE WITH PATIENCE
After reading all the reviews I finaly purchased the remote. The only flexible way to program the unit [as stated by many others] is through the Advanced computer USB Sync mode. Once you get over the hurdle of the first Advance programing of your various remotes the Sony remote will have to be updated for your paticular system set up. This is where the unit SHINES. You...

2.0 out of 5 stars You have to be an M.I.T. grad to program this thing!!
My wife bought me the Sony commander for Christmas and, almost a month later, I still haven't got this thing figured out yet. I can't believe how complicated programming this remote is. The accompanying software isn't user friendly at all. X-press settings -- forget about it!! I owned the earlier version of this same remote which, unfortunately, fizzled out but it was...

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT REMOTE WITH PATIENCE, March 7, 2008

After reading all the reviews I finaly purchased the remote. The only flexible way to program the unit [as stated by many others] is through the Advanced computer USB Sync mode. Once you get over the hurdle of the first Advance programing of your various remotes the Sony remote will have to be updated for your paticular system set up. This is where the unit SHINES. You can amend your Advanced setups very quickly once you truly understand your systems needs. There is no way anyone would be able to set up the Sony AX 4000A and get all of your individual parameters figured out the first time. All my AV gear is from different manfactures, Projector, TV, Receiver, Cable Box, and a DVD Player. My kids use to laugh at me when I would line up the 6 remotes, eye glasses and flashlight to enjoy a movie. 6th remote is for a Hunter fan/light which does not use IR technology. Now I use the Sony Remote and the Hunter Fan/Light remote, no eye glasses the lighted screen is Great. Yes the first time to set up the remote can be very overwhellming but like any modern day computer based device given time you can become very proficient at it's use. I hope it works well for you maybe not the first time you set it up but maybe by the 4th or 5th time you will have this baby dialed in. Best of Luck

The accompanying software isn't user friendly at all. X-press settings -- forget about it!! I owned the earlier version of this same remote which, unfortunately, fizzled out but it was much easier to program manually. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone and it's difficult to believe that this is an actual Sony product.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is awesome, December 25, 2007

I had read the reviews of this remote and therefore was prepared for a difficult time programming it to my 5 different system components.

As it turned out, however, using the USB connection (cable and software included), programming was a breeze. I can now turn on and off different combinations of components with one button.

But even without that magic, just not having to use three different remotes to watch a DVD or switch from a DVD to my DVR was worth the price.

If I could wave a magic wand and make this product absolutely perfect for me, I would make it a tad narrower (because I have short fingers), and give it blue-tooth capability so it would work with the new PS3 systems.

I would highly recommend this product! You won't be sorry you made the investment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Timer function needs improvement, October 20, 2008
By
Al Behnke (Arlington, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony RM-AX4000A Home Theater Remote Control (Electronics)
I bought this remote to avoid having to buy a new DVR with a HDTV tuner - so the timer function was the important feature for me. I am controlling a Pioneer DVR-640 and a HD convert box - Insignia NS-DXA1-APT. Now, I program about 12 shows on the DVR, and there are 8 timer slots on the Sony remote. The problem is for the Sony remote ON and OFF are separate events, so only 4 shows can be actually programmed! It can have separately named projects with their own timer programs, so that might help a little to overcome the small number of timer slots. I have to reconnect to the PC to swap the timer programs. The timer programming task is OK using the PC to set the events, but the task looks quite complex to do this by remote only - something like 13 steps for each of the ON and OFF events.

I found the following problems during programming: 1. I could not get it to recognize the type of the remote of any of my four devices automatically, instead I had to either guess at the preset code or manually program each key individually. 2. I found that some of the keys set by entering a preset code work ok individually, but not in a macro. If you have problems getting macros to work, try having the Sony remote learn the keys individually (delete the preset for the key first).

There is no printed manual provided so that means a lot of window swapping trying to read the manual in one window and work the program in another.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total JUNK!, January 13, 2009

Replacing an older RM-AV3000, I just got the RM-AX4000. Programming is not very intuitive. Finally got through it though. One of the steps is to press "learn", where one is directed to press (for example), the "play" button on a DVD remote. The normal operation is that one presses the button for a few seconds, and then "learning complete" appears. Sometimes, however, it takes ten or fifteen seconds, or (worse), one *immediately* receives a message that no signal has been received.

After going through this half a dozen times, I called Sony and and spent 4.5 hours on hold. I finally found that if I darkened the room completely, things went better.

Tonight, I noticed that if I select (for example) channel 2-4-0, I get channel 2-4-000, or if I select 2-3-1, I get 2-33-1. Just gave up!

This thing is going back.

For sure you have to read the manual to understand how to program the remote unit. Make use of the setup CD to program your remote can prove easier via PC than manually learn the code from remote controllers. With PC setup, you can maximise the use of program xpress and airslide function.

The setup CD software able to store/backup the setting in case you lose the setting when changing battery.

Not recommended for consumer that prefer a off-the-shelf gadget and use it right-away.

I have all Sony product except an Onkyo receiver and Hd cable box. I used the op-pc and no luck. Tried manual and only get part of the controls. Logitech Harmony has a better remote however the battery life is so short.

This review is from: Sony RM-AX4000A Home Theater Remote Control (Electronics)
the only problems i have with this remote are that it does not work with my sony cdr/cd player recorder, deck A plays cd's and the remote works with that deck, but deck B records cd's and the remote will not work with it. also this remote has no drivers or upgrade support for windows vista when you try to program the remote. thank goodness for my old pc that still uses windows xp. all in all im happy with my purchase.
