Troubles,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony RM-V302 5-Device Universal Remote Commander Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
This remote out of the box controlled my Sony DVD player. It did not however, control my Sony receiver. Nor could I program it to do so (yes, tried the Sony codes, and tries learning the code). I also couldn't get it to control my Scientific Atlanta cable box. I also couldn't get it to control my RCA VCR. I could get it to turn on/off my Phillips TV but it wouldn't do anything else (channels, volume, etc). There's no LED on this remote to let you know when you're doing anything which is also annoying. I guess you get what you pay for, but it would be nice if it at least worked.

won't control my SONY receiver,

I lost the remote to my receiver, thinking this was a Sony remote, it has to work right? WRONG! Works great with everything else though. Thought maybe the problem was my receiver, but apparently someone else had the same problem with their Sony receiver as well.

After inadvertently spilling some liquid on our Zenith TV remote, it was time to find a replacement of some sort. Zenith wanted $33.00 for an OEM replacement (which is too much) and we found this Sony universal remote instead! Not only did it automatically work *great* on our Sony receiver and DVD player, but it was a breeze to setup for use with our Zenith TV -- all the functions we had before! An added bonus was finding that it would also control our Sharp VCR! Very cool! All I can say is "Thanks, Sony! -- you've saved us a lot of remote juggling *and* a few dollars as well!" Highly recommended.

Looking at all the other reviews, I got the feeling that this remote is getting a bit of a bum rap. Admittedly, I'm only using it to control my Sharp TV and a JVC DVD/VCR combo, but it works flawlessly. It also figures out that if you are touching volume up/down you want to change the volume on the TV (I thought you'd have to hit the TV button, then do volume changes).

I bought this remote with hopes of reducing the juggling of current remotes and have found it to be a great disappointment. I have a Scientific Atlanta digital cable box, Tivo - Series 2, Phillips tv, Samsung 5 disc - dvd player and a RCA vcr. I've only been able to make this remote work with the vcr and have pushed buttons till my fingers ache. None of the codes listed work and neither does the search. There's no indication that the buttons have been pressed hard enough but I'm sure I have. It could be that this one is a dud but after reading the other reviews, I'm returning this remote.

Bad Programming,

It worked fine with the Sony TV and DVD. It could not be programmed to work with the Toshiba VCR or the RCA DirectTV satelite receiver. The entire point was to find a remote that would get them all to work. I already have the Sony TV remote that could handle the DVD and TV.Very Disappointing! Their support number just had an automated system which did not address this problem. Most of the options said you need to change batteries or turn on the device. Not helpful at all.

Annoying remote,

It worked for my Pioneer Receiver and my Panasonic 5 disk DVD changer (but I couldn't change disks). It did NOT work for my Sylvania TV or my JVC VCR at all. Also, the buttons on the remote are very mushy and there is no indication that you are actually pressing any buttons (like a light or a click noise). All in all: not a good remote. I will say this for it, it is more ergonomically friendly than most of the remotes that came with my systems. So back to the store it goes.

We've tried several universal remotes that I have had much difficulty with. We bought this universal remote to replace one made by RCA, which I was able to program to use with our Toshiba television, Sony VCR, and RCA DVD player. Ironically, the only thing the RCA universal remote didn't correctly operate was the navigation/menu for the RCA DVD player (yes, I tried all the codes they provided). We could turn our DVD player off and on and make it play and stop playing, but we had to use a different remote to navigate DVD menus and make selections. This one by Sony is inexpensive and does everything we wanted it to do. In addition to these three components (TV, VHS, and DVD), it can also, evidently, control a cable box and a stereo receiver (although we aren't using these functions). At last! A cheap universal remote that actually does it all for us--and is easy to use as well.

Another disappointment from Sony,

I bought this remote to replace an older 3-device Sony Remote control, with the hopes of using it to control (mainly) my Series-2 Tivo, and every once in a while to control JVC DVD player, Toshiba VCR, Sony TV, and Panasonic combo audio system. So far, it controls everything but the TIVO. In the code book, there are codes listed for a Sony Tivo and a Philips Tivo - but none for a Tivo Tivo. My other gripe is that the Volume and Channel keys, while they have gotten bigger, have been moved to the middle of the unit. On my precursor remote, the keys were at the bottom, making it easy to find and switch. This unit - the keys are similar to the keys below them, and it takes some hunting. There's no LED to confirm settings, and the keys feel much less tactile than the previous remote. Nowhere do the instructions tell you which device key to use for a DVR.
So, as always, just like leaving MP3 support out of it's MP3 players, Sony disappoints by leaving out Tivo-brand support, while supporting its own Tivo device.
