I am sure this product is fine..... but,
This review is from: Sony RMX55M Marine Wired Remote Control (Electronics)
Amazon listed this remote as frequently bought with the CDX-M60UI Sony Marine Stereo/CD player. I thought this was a very good deal so I bought both. Turns out it wasn't that great a deal. The Stereo itself is great. The RMX55M remote however, does not have all functionality with the CDX-M60UI stereo. I would estimate about 60 to 70% of the functions actually work. The display will only show radio and Aux sources. It does not display CD or USB.
I then researched on Sony's website and found that this remote is not recommended for the CDX-M60UI. Amazon... please change your "Frequently Bought With" suggestions for both the CDX-M60UI and the RMX55M as both imply that they are actually compatible with each other. The item came quick enough from DiscounsJungle, but came postage due!!! I paid for shipping. Why am I being charged extra? I am going to have to send this remote back and get the RMX60M which is actually compatible with the CDX-M60UI. I hope the next two transactions are handled a little better. UPDATE: I chose to keep this remote. After finding out that it is subject to a 15% restock fee on top of the shipping back to DiscountsJungle, then adding the $100+ payout for the RMX60M plus shipping, I decided it was not worth the trouble and $$$ to see the extra information on the LCD. After all, the important buttons work as they should. I will get the 60 when it becomes obsolete and is around the price of the 55. I probably will not buy from DiscountsJungle again. Postage due... what a rinky dink outfit!

The stereo gave out on my sailboat and I decided it was time to upgrade so I bought a Sony head unit with iPod control and the RMX55M wired remote so I could control the music from the steering pedestal.. The first problem I ran into was that Sony does not sell an extension to the Unilink cables that connect it to the head unit. I had to hand wire one. You'd think 18' would be more than enough but once you start having to thread the wires through all the twists and turns of a boat it comes up short.. The second problem I encountered was there's no dust shield/cover for the unit. All my other Marine electronics come with some type of cover to protect them from the sun, dust, rain, and the general harsh marine environment while the boat is stowed. For some reason Sony did not include this simple yet very important accessory, I'm currently using a cut up plastic cup to cover it during storage. When I stow my boat the pedestal now reads Raymarine, Raymarine, iComm, & Dixie?! The good news is that the interface is great easy to read even in glaring mid-day sun light, the buttons are nice and big for easy operation while you're moving, and is very intuitive to use, I really like the functionality of the product.. I just wish Sony would have done a little more research into their target customer base[Boat owners] on this one.

I decided to purchase the RMX55M instead of the lesser expensive one b/c of the LCD option. I thought it would be great to be able to see what song is playing and to browse through my iPod easier. Well that would be great, except when you plug in an iPod or other USB device, the LCD only shows "USB." SERIOUSLY?!?! What's the point of it then? The only real benefit is that you can see the volume level... I guess. Save yourself the extra money and purchase the one without the LCD.

Works great with the Sony marine stereo I bought. Very easy to install and use. Controls are pretty intuitive and match the stereo.

The sony remote was priced far and away lower than any other seller on the net, and since I hadn't heard of this compnay before, I was skeptical, but since I am in Iraq I thought, what the heck I can wait a little longer for delivery. The remote showed up three days after I ordered it though to my fiancee in Wisconsin. I didnt even have time to tell her it was coming. What an awesome job getting it out immediatly. It arrived new in an unopened box and packaging. I cant wait to try it out when I get back home. I would definitly order again from this company.

I bought this wired remote specifically to browse the songs on my iPhone, check the song name while it's playing and all. All it shows on the LCD when I connect my iPhone is "USB". I connected an android phone and it also says USB. Pretty disappointing. I'm done with Sony Marine Audio. I'm getting Clarion next.

I bought this remote as a replacement. This was supposed to be a warrantied replacement from Sony but had been discontinued and was offered a refund. I was able to pick up this replacement here at a comparable price. The unit works great and would be a great addition to any system. Transaction went smoothly and the item was delivered on time. Thanks.

Works very well, easy to read display even with sunglasses on. Has appeared to remain water tight even after 1 year of use in saltwater. Buttons are easy to use even while underway in sea conditions. Would buy again if needed second control.

Great product. Installation was easy. Product was missing a wire from the package, called Sony and they sent me one free of any charge. Very satisfied with the product. Functions well, easy to use, and looks great at night!

for smaller runabout or flats type boats, just be aware that the hole for this unit is 3.25" and the unit itself is probably 4.5" in diameter. not a heck of a lot smaller than the radio it connects to. I have a center console flats boat and this unit will take up a lot of space in the console; I am still trying to figure out where to put it. If Sony just made a waterproof cover for their marine radio, this remote would not be that handy (Again for center console boats).
Reading other comments I now wonder if this remote is itself waterproof...the "marine" radio is not; it's "weather resistant". Since my electronics are fully exposed to weather, I have to have waterPROOF. My chartplotter and depth sounder are. I think I will mount my remote on a piece of teak so I dont have to cut the 3.25" hole, in case the remote fails the sony radio I got already has a wireless remote. I mounted my radio inside my console, so I just open the door and zap it with the wireless. just know what you are buying. there are not a lot of folks that make marine radios, and my new sony unit appears to be a quality product, but this remote has its shortcomings. That said, it's hard to find a better solution. |
