Product Description

Sony’s Nano AR Coating with nano-precision structure contributes to high-quality images with reduced ghosting and flare. This proprietary Sony coating technology features aligned microscopic asperities that reduce the effects of the reflective interfacial boundary on the surface of the lens, thus dramatically reducing the amount of undesirable reflections entering the lens.

Haven't had the chance to use the lens extensively as the weather has not been ideal for shooting on the occasions I want to use it(and the lens isn't weather sealed). But on the few occasions I have gotten to use it, the focusing has been very snappy with a good hit rate on focus, and the shots are very sharp.

Purchased the lens to replace a 75-300SAL that I was using to get decent reach for photographing kids outdoor sports. The 75-300 was just not cutting it, mainly because of the very harsh chromatic aberration, but its a $250 lens.

70-400 has more reach than the 75-300(600mm vs 450mm equivalent on my APS-C), tack sharp, and the chromatic aberration is virtually non-existent(the biggest plus in my mind). But then it is a $2200 lens vs the $250.

It is quite heavy. I would suggest a monopod for any extended shooting. And the lens is not weather sealed, though the fit and finish are superb.

Hopefully I will have a chance to revisit this review in the future. I am reluctant to give any product a 5 rating without more extensive use, but if the lens continues to perform well I may well increase my rating.

First of all my camera is the Sony A58 which is their entry level DSLR. Results may vary on other cameras. I took over 700 test shots with this lens. I tested it at every subject distance, aperture, and ISO combination. Most of these shots were done with manual focus and then not touched when switching apertures. I didn't want the autofocus to vary with my shots. The camera was always set on a steady table, not a tripod. I use this lens mostly for birding wildlife, so fast focus and clarity is the most important as I have to crop every photo. Here's my conclusion.
This lens is extremely sharp at 300mm. Even at F5.6. There is almost no difference at F8. If you pixel peep, 400mm at F5.6 seems a little softer but you need to crop it at least 4x to notice. At F8, 400mm is on par with 300mm. I found that enlarging the 300mm shots give me the same or better results. My average crop is 6-9x and they still look good. There is also more DOF at 300mm which adds to the clarity. Most of my shots are handheld wildlife so 400mm is too much shake anyway. Nonetheless, I am slightly dissappointed that it's not the same clarity as 300mm. Again, at F8 the 400mm is on par with 300mm but who wants to be forced into F8 if it's not needed. F5.6 allows me the flexibility to keep my shutter speed up for wildlife shots. If the lighting is good, I step up the aperture but still usually shoot at 300mm. It just fits better for quick handheld shots. Ever try to shoot a flying bird at 400mm? Good luck! Another thing I noticed is that the autofocus nails it more frequently at 300mm. Although, this could have something to do with the narrower DOF at 400mm. The ability to zoom out to 70mm is also a big bonus. You will be thankful for the amount of times you didn't have to switch lenses. Most 400mm only go down to 100mm.

Excellent lens, but not perfect. This lens is NOT sealed, and for the price tag, you can expect a fully sealed lens. Also, quite heavy and have problems focusing in low light conditions. But is a good improvement over the previous version.

Lens is sharp, quick to focus, and a nice zoom range. Met or exceeded my expectations.

Only negative is its weight. Not a carry round lens.
