This is a compact lens that do not have the SAM and MACRO function. I bought it because lots of reviews point out the SAM doesn't bring better performance to the later model.

After used it during my backpacking trip with my A100, I found its image quality is better than SAL1870 kit in the 55-70mm range. However, for its tele-end image quality, it will be better if you can step down to at least f8.

The focus speed is good if the light is bright enough. The only disadvantage is the min. focus distance when you use it in the outside. This lens need about 1.5 meter at least to get focused.

It is not a good lens for indoor use, either. Its focus is not fast enough when you stay in the room. Also, the focus distance limits it usage in a small space. However, with the price you can get right now, it is not a bad deal at all.

This lens is light, sharp, easy to use. Covers a very usable range from 55mm to 200mm. This is the range that I most often use. Colors are great. The filter size is 55mm which enables me to save some money and use the same filters for this lens as well as the kit 18-55mm lens. Couldn't be happier.

focus speed is mediocre, center sharpness pretty good, edges a little soft. build quality is pretty decent, though it feels light and cheap. lots of much more rigorous reviews on this and competitor's lenses out there.

I picked up a copy April 2009 on sale for $100 for use on A700.

For APS sensors (all Sony DSLRs but A900), has ED glass, circular aperture. Very light weight. Does macro. Perfect for travel. If it is lost, stolen, or broken, I will be mad but only out $100!

Look, it is an all plastic lens body including the mount. It is not a $2000 pro G lens or even a $599 Zeiss lens. But you know, for $100 it takes GREAT pictures and is light weight.

I thought this zoom range was odd but, it has been fun to use and useful.

This model has been replaced with a version that appears to be identical but has a motor in it and a focus lock on it.

I bought this lens for my father, who uses an A37 Sony Camera (A-mount). He is satisfied with its performance. He was using the default 18-55mm lens before I got him the reviewed item, and he has seen a difference when taking photos with this lens. It has a fair price, compared to the uber-professional lenses you can find for the Alpha series. For an amateur photographer, this lens is a good investment and a fair improvement.
