I've had this lens for about a year now, and overall I'm very pleased. I'm a hobbyist photographer who averages several hundred photos per month.

The G series are the best lenses Sony makes. Most of them are F2.8 or faster, so this one is a little different in that regard. It's also plastic construction, not metal. But the plastic is high quality, and keeps the weight down, so I have no complaints about that at all. I gave it four stars because metal would hold up better and some people prefer it, especially for a G lens. But I expect this lens to keep on working well for a long, long time.

The most important aspect of a lens is the quality of the images it produces, and this lens holds it's head up high in that regard. Sharp, crisp images with good color, contrast, and bokeh. Virtually no chromatic aberration or other optical flaws. The lens really delivers when you can give it the light it needs. As for the light it needs, if you can't tell what to expect when comparing this to an F2.8 lens, then you probably shouldn't be shelling out the bucks for this lens anyway. Learn a bit more, get some experience, and then decide what you need.

Personally, I do a lot of my shooting in the desert sun, where having enough light is almost never a problem. There have been a few times when I'd wished for more maximum aperture, but if you really need that, get ready to spend 1.5 - 2 times as much. Or kick up the ISO and get good at the noise reduction features in your RAW converter.

Focusing with this lens is fast and virtually silent. Could hardly be any better, really.

When you put the hood on this lens, it becomes a formidable-looking piece of artillery.
