This review is from: Sony SB-V31G Game and Video Selector with 3-Component Functionality (Electronics)
This item does exactly what it's designed to do. I picked this item over others because I didn't want something that required power. You can connect up to three devices, selecting them with a somewhat clunky wheel. I'm sure there's a reason why Sony chose to use a wheel instead of switches or other selectors. There is no crosstalk between the channels, so even if you have all three devices on, you'll see no interference with the image. The images are just as good using this device as they are without it.
If you're also looking to eliminate cable clutter, this isn't for you. I call this thing the "octopus", but I have it and all its connected components hidden behind closed doors in our entertainment center. Once all of the cables are connected, the device becomes a little unwieldly. You'll also want to keep it within reach, with enough slack on the cables so that you can pick it up and see what number the wheel is on, while actually being able to turn the wheel. I don't think using this product results in a neat installation, so it won't suit every installation.

Works perfectly!,

This switch works perfectly. I have a Nintendo Wii and Sony PS2 hooked up to a big screen TV. And my kids (8yo & 5yo) can work it to switch up which game system they want to play with. And I even still have an "open" line in for a future device.
I would recommend this if you need to do something similar.

Other uses as Audio Splitter!,
By
This review is from: Sony SB-V31G Game and Video Selector with 3-Component Functionality (Electronics)
I bought this product to use as an audio splitter for my dvd player and cable box. I use my stereo as my audio source and was looking for an easier way to change the audio source. I was just switching the cables out by hand before I purchased a component cabinet, which made it harder to get to. From other reviews, I thought you had to have video run to the Selector also, but you don't. You can use it for audio only if you want. This has been one of the best and most useful small hardware purchases I have made. Just turn the dial. Easy.

Requires a video signal,

I wanted to use this to switch between different audio sources and the occasional video source. The problem is that like most other switchers, this requires a video signal to work. Great if you always have that, but for me ... not so great.

The SONY game and video selector is a must if you have multiple game systems, a DVD player, and a VHS dinosaur. Our last SONY SB-V31G lasted almost seven years! Damned good equipment!

Very Convenient-They Don't Tell You What Else You Need!,

This works well to hook up various components to your TV - dvd player, vcr, ps2/3, xbox/360, Wii, etc. and easily switch between them. The one problem I had, was finding a male-to-male a/v cables (red/yellow/white) cable, as one doesn't come with this. Also, I paid about 5 dollars less for this last year, not sure why the raise in price. This is a good product, just be willing to spend ten more dollars on a cable (on eBay or a hardware store - best buy will charge you twice that).

This produce works exactly as expected and after six months of daily switching, we have had no problems. There does not appear to be any quality issues with the picture and the product easily switches us from our dvd player, to the digital cable, to the WII. Not much else to say.

Good, small, but not tidy,

I bought the spouse a Wii and now we have a dvd player, XBox 360, and a Wii...I had tried a Radio Shack splitter (house brand) which introduced switching noise and degraded the image quality of both units. I bought this one based on its size, cost, and lack of an external power supply.
Size: the unit is about 5" long--like a Dunkin Donuts bagel, and about 1/2 the thickness. Cost: Less expensive than other units out there, about 1/2 the price of a GE push-button model. Power supply: none needed! I think I have quite enough devices that need to plug in--my house is full of 'power vampires', so having a standalone unit was important to me. The rotary knob is basically idiot proof, and moves through its range of motion smoothly. The unit itself is light but doesn't feel cheap. Not tidy: someone else called it an 'octopus' and I would tend to agree. This is not a design fault, it's in the nature of the beast. You'll have to find a place to hide it for sure. Over all I'm very pleased with this product.

I bought this a few months ago in order to use both my PS2 and my new XBox 360 on the same TV. Works very well. I love that you can just twist the nob for the system you are using. Perfect for what I needed it for, and not a bad price either.

Great solution for plugging multiple devices to a TV,

In my daughter's game room we had a TV, DVD and VCR. Now they got a Wii and a karaoke machine. All these devices use component video (the three cables with round plugs, one for video and two for stereo audio). Our TV and VCR have only one component video input.
As a consequence, every time they wanted to play Wii or watch a movie, we had to unplug whatever was connected and plug the new device. This selector solved everything. It is super simple to use (my 6 year old learned it in one minute), works great and is compact. It feels sturdy and well built, plus being a Sony is somewhat of a guarantee. We have been using this selector for about a month and could not be hapier. Highly recommended. |
