Sonnar T* FE 35mm F2.8 ZA

Carl Zeiss quality delivers superior contrast and resolution throughout the image

Outstanding resolution and contrast are the key features of this lens. Three double-sided aspherical elements (six aspherical surfaces) effectively control spherical aberration, while extensive application of the Zeiss T* coating not only minimizes flare and ghosting for natural color reproduction, but is instrumental in achieving impressive contrast as well.

A perfect match for the α7-series full frame bodies, with outstanding optical performance in a versatile 35mm focal length

The handling and convenience of this wide angle lens for 35mm full frame format bodies is significantly improved by the use of an internal focus mechanism that keeps the length of the lens constant during focusing. The light weight of this model also enhances portability as well as handling. All of this plus compact dimensions and outstanding image quality make the SEL35F28Z an ideal match for the full-frame α7-series full frame E-mount bodies.

Bright F2.8 maximum aperture

A bright maximum aperture of F2.8 enhances shooting convenience, particularly since the same high image quality is maintained at all aperture settings. Bright lenses usually end up being physically large, but in this case a new focus lens group design has made it possible to achieve a large maximum aperture in a compact unit. A circular aperture design delivers gorgeous bokeh for smoothly defocused backgrounds.

Dust and moisture resistant design

Like the α7-series full frame E-mount bodies, critical areas of the lens exterior feature dust and moisture resistant seals that help to ensure reliable operation even in adverse environmental conditions. The lens exterior features an elegant aluminum finish, adding sophistication that is consistent with the high quality standards implied by the Carl Zeiss name.

Supplied dedicated hood matches the lens’s compact form

The supplied ALC-SH129 lens hood is a cap type similar to the ALC-SH113 lens hood supplied with the SEL30M35 and SEL20F28. This design is a perfect match for the compact lens barrel, contributing to both portability and protection. A filter thread is provided in the lens hood itself, allowing 40.5mm filters to be attached while the lens hood is in use.

The lens is made of a high quality plastic.

The center is already very, very good from 2.8, and stopping down to f4 brings it tack sharp.

Only minimal vignetting and corners sharpness is very good.

Using this lens on an A7 camera.

This is an initial assessment, as I've only owned the lens/camera combo for a few days now. But I feel I've taken enough shots to give a reasonable first impression.

First, I find the build quality quite high. The lens feels sturdy, and is made of metal. The fact that it's weather sealed is a bonus that cannot be ignored in this area as well. The focusing ring moves smoothly, and is just shy of being too stiff, which is to say the action is very good but not excellent (for me). Lens hood is well-designed, and its diminutive size keeps you from ever wanting to remove it.
On the A7, this lens is extremely compact, and the couple compares favorably to say, an Olympus E-M1 with the 17mm f1.8 lens. Given this fact, I don't mind that the widest aperture is only 2.8.

The autofocus of the lens is quite fast. While I don't have anything to compare it to on the A7, I will say that in congress, the couple makes quite the speedy pair, especially in good light. When things get dim, it tends to hunt just a bit more, but really not too much. Compared to an Oly E-M5 with the 17mm 1.8, the combo is a bit slow, but not so much that I'm particularly worried about it.

I find the resolution of the lens to be excellent. The center is already very, very good from 2.8, and stopping down to f4 brings it tack sharp. The edges are slightly behind, but not by much, and stopping down will yield very sharp images across the frame.

The vignetting characteristic of the lens is a little on the high side at f2.

superb, sharp lens. I recently also bought the sigma 35mm f1.4 with the sony laea4 adapter, when comparing the 2 on paper. The sigma should be better but the CZ blows it away in sharpeness and over all usability. Its very light, a pleasure to carry around and take pics. Also with the sigma + laea4 combo i noticed a lot of purple fringing.

This is a wonderful sharp lens and a good start to the E-mount lenses that Sony is making for full frame cameras. It has an odd hood on it and I observed vignetting with it when the hood is on but no vignetting was noted with the hood off. The hood protects the lens quite nicely but it is inverted inward. The lens is made of a high quality plastic. I am a Canon user and at first the plastic was hard to get used to but it is very light weight (which I love) and the lens is smooth to use. The lens hood has a perfect fit and is locked on solidly when it is put on. With this lens on, my camera fits neatly into my purse and makes the Sony A7R easy to carry as a pocket camera.
I am not seeing any chromatic aberrations but am still in the process of testing the lens. I have the Sony RX1 and feel that this lens is comparable to the lens on the RX1. I am hoping that Sony comes out with an ultra wide angle lens soon…..but for now, this is a good start……..

This lens is very very sharp on my A7. Only minimal vignetting and corners sharpness is very good. The center is great. The lens is light and small, auto focus is very fast. I can see why they decided on an f2.8 as part of a travel or carry around kit; this makes the camera very portable with not much compromise except in extremely low light. Awesome!

Beautiful and quaint lens. I have no complaints beyond some occasional green fringing when wide open. Would have been nice to have OSS but not sure it's necessary at this focal length paired with the 2.8

Somewhat disappointed with this lens. Using it with the Sony A7R. It is very sharp in the center but dark and soft in the corners. This is very noticeable when shooting something flat - like a wall. The vignetting and corner softness is much more pronounced then the Sony RX1 with the Zeiss 35mm F/2.0.

If you want to test it yourself use a tripod and take a picture of a wall. Make sure you are exactly perpendicular to the wall. Shoot at various f-stops. Then view the images at 100% magnification and compare the center to the edges. This is not an exact science but it will give you a decent idea how sharp a lens is from edge to edge under those conditions. I've done this with dozens of lenses so I have a pretty good idea what is acceptable and what is not. This lens is marginal at best on the edges but very sharp in the center.

This is the only lens I have used with the Sony A7R. Actually, it is the only lens that Sony has yet to release specially made for this camera. I look forward to testing the Zeiss 24-70mm in February when it is released. I hope the edge issues are specific to this lens and are not a function of the camera. I'll know more after I get my hands on a few more lenses.

Review is for this lens with Sony's A7R.

Plus. I have taken some good pictures with this lens, some that arguably needed no post processing to be acceptable. The lens is sharp, focuses reasonably fast, and is very nice "considering it's very compact size". Which takes us to the Cons.

Cons. I feel frustrated as an owner of this lens in a few ways. I believe concessions were made to the overall performance of this lens to ensure that it was extremely compact. As this lens was, and still is as of 4/2014, the only native FE, autofocus, 35mm lens available for the A7R, and was literally the only FE lens available at launch, this begs the question "How much better could this lens have been if it were developed for maximum performance instead of a small form factor?". I believe that question is answered by the vastly superior performance of the Zeiss 55mm F/1.8 (SEL55F18Z) which is in the same league as the Zeiss Otus 55 F/1.8.
In conclusion, I now feel compelled to buy the Zeiss 55mm F/1.8 and similarly feel, as a not-wealthy person, that buying this lens may have been somewhat of a waste.

Please take this review with a grain of salt as I am not a professional photographer. I just really, really like to take pictures and read.
I use dxomark.com, flickr.com, dpreview.com and some others as a reference for cameras and lenses, especially when planning a purchase.
