A Proficient Unit with many Good Features,
By gobirds2 (New England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Progressive Scan Combo Player (Electronics)
This has many features and is a very good product for the price. The DVD and CD players are good. I send the sound to my home theater receiver and it sounds wonderful. The VHS portion plays better than my other stand-alone SONY VCR. What I really liked is that this unit has Quasi-S Playback so I can play my S-VHS tapes. The picture is good. What I found amazing was that the EP record mode (6 hour) looked better than the SP (2 hour). I played some EP recordings made on this unit on my parents' JVC and the picture was outstanding. You can also view CD ROM (JPEGS, etc.) images with this unit on your TV. My only complaint with this unit is that the remote is too small and too "busy" with all the buttons very close together. If you want to watch DVDs, record and play VHS tapes without going beyond that I would recommend this SONY unit as a possible choice if you are in the market for a combination unit.

Just What I was Looking For,
By
This review is from: Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Progressive Scan Combo Player (Electronics)
I have been looking for a unit that will play both DVDs and VHS tapes. I have a pretty good-sized collection of DVDs and pre-recorded VHS tapes. This SONY unit fits the bill. I can play everything with this single unit. I can still record tapes off the cable too if I wish. One remote handles everything. I can also hook this unit to my TV using an RF cable or RCA type cables if I wish. You do not get that option with a stand-alone DVD player. So far I am very pleased with this unit. All my tapes look very good and the Fast Forward and Rewind is very fast. The price is right to.

Be Warned: The Remote Requires Accurate Aiming,
By
This review is from: Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Progressive Scan Combo Player (Electronics)
The remote control might drive you batty. You have to point it directly at whatever it's controlling in order for it to work. Besides the obvious, this means that unless you've memorized the buttons and can feel which is which, you must hold the remote level and then lean forward to read its labels and press its buttons.
Otherwise, the thing is nice. I like the fact that its remote is actually a universal remote that can control channel, volume, and power to many makes & models of TV, including my 15-year-old Panasonic. We're finally able to use a single remote for the TV and its media player while still having full access to the media player's features, such as "subtitles on/off".

Super Sony,

My old DVD would not play some of the many new formats, i.e. DVD-R, etc. This unit plays every DVD I've put in it with no hassles. The VCR has an auto tracking adjustment feature that seems to be fool proof, no stutters or static in the sound. And the icing on the cake is the remote. I understand it! Plus it controls my television functions. Excellent price and standard excellent Amazon service. Well done.

I have purchased two other DVD-VHS players in the past. This one is the best!! Picture is great, and the fast scanning is terrific. The price can't be beat either. Very happy I purchased it.

Highest Quality And Performance In Another Sony Product,

It should not come as a surprise to anyone that Sony produces a top of the line product. This player will track pretty much any DVD(of course, it is restricted to play only region one or region zero--region zero DVDs are DVDs that will play on any player from any country; this product will NOT play DVDs from regions other than one or zero!) or VHS tape you will ever come up with. Remember, I am talking about tracking, not overriding regional coding! This is a region one player. The image and sound are as good as it gets, and there are plenty of deluxe features. The remote is nicely designed, too, and it will also control some TVs if desired. There are only a few drawbacks I will mention. For one thing, this unit will not make a VHS copy of a DVD directly in the unit.(There are other brands that will do it, such as Daewoo, as long as the DVD is not copy protected.) This fact is only mentioned as a footnote in the manual. The only way to do it would require the use of another player, and the manual does explain how to do that(it helps to insert a video stabilizer in between the two units to prevent synchronization problems as often occurs with some DVDs that are copy-protected--but you should not violate any copyright laws). While the DVD player can certainly perform all the usual search functions(jumping directly to a specified point in a DVD) nowhere in the manual is it explained how to do a search!(It is done by accessing the display function and using the directional keys, similar to what is explained for other functions.) I was also surprised to find that RCA connecting cables were not supplied, but an RF cable connector was(the unit allows either or both connections). So, as long as you don't require direct transfers from DVD to VHS, this unit is highly recommended.

Not User Friendly,
By
This review is from: Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Progressive Scan Combo Player (Electronics)
I have an antenna and plain tv so I can't comment about the quality of the product. However, the user interface is so awful that I regret buying this product. What should have been an easy setup was very frustrating due to the 114 page owners manual. There were setup instructions on pg 99 that I had to follow and even then the instructions were not complete. If I didn't have prior experience using a vcr, I would never have figured it out based on the manual.
In order to program the vcr recorder, you have to use the up/down buttons to enter all the info, it doesn't accept the number keys! The default minutes seems to start at 30, which forces you to up/down to zero most of the time. Very unfriendly! Plus there seems to be a 20 second record gap when you're recording 2 programs back to back. Programming the vcr recorder is as far as I got. I was so aggravated by this whole experience so far that I had to stop and write this review. I've never used a dvd player before and I'm not looking foward to reading this manual as my intro. :( Update: I ended up returning this product and buying the Samsung DVD-V5650. The Samsung user manual was better but the product has similar shortcomings so now I feel bad for trashing the Sony for faults that are probably common to all VCRs being sold today. I would have adjusted the ratings up, but it wasn't an option.

Sony SLVD370P VCR problems,
By Dan (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Progressive Scan Combo Player (Electronics)
Let me start by saying that I always buy Sony products and I have been very happy with them. This product, unfortunately is the exception.
I purchased this DVD/VCR combo mainly for the VCR function, but within the first week I had problems with the quality of the picture on the VCR during playback. When I paused the tape I could see that there was definitely a problem because a 4-head VCR should still have a clear picture on pause, and this did not. I exchanged the unit for the same item, and this time the VCR taped well, but within the first week it made a horrible noise during rewinding which only got worse with each use. I had two different problems with two different units within a month. Save yourself the headache and get a different DVD/VCR combo.

It didn't last long...,
By SEH (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Progressive Scan Combo Player (Electronics)
Well... it was a great product for a month until it crapped out. Before that it provided great video quality, good recording quality, and was (to me) intuitively easy to use. I was, overall, very happy with it. Then the DVD player started going (skipping, scambled digital signals/picture/sound, etc). Once the DVD player went, the VCR went right after or about the same time. It was hard to tell, because the VCR wasn't used as much. Right now, it makes for a nice big paper weight. What a piece of junk. My final comment: Hey Sony, if you want to get into the low end market and sell your products cheap, make sure they perform up to your reputation and customer's expectations of your quality. This was an experience that will make me think twice before buying another Sony product - despite my many years of good experiences with their products.
