5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, Features, and Value.
This compact unit is wonderful. This machine plays old, battered tapes without the slightest of complaints, has many great features (VCR plus, multiple-brand remote control, etc.), and has an attractive display & on-screen features.

The picture is very clear and the sound quality is great. There is nothing more that I could ask from this VCR!

I've always been a die-hard sony fan, but after purchasing this VCR and having to return it twice I am no longer as dedicated. The pic. quality is excellent and the machine is well featured but I had trouble with hi-fi sound quality. When using w/home theater setup there was extra undesirable noise introduced into the soundtrack. You could hear a ticking in the background of the soundtrack like the spinning heads inside were somehow adding noise to the audio track. Being a big home theater fan, this was VERY distracting. I ended up purchasing Toshiba's M675 and am very satisfied. They have a new head design that eliminates extra distortion in sound & picture. Overall pic & sound quality is better than the sony too.

I don't know if I received a defective one, but this this is louder than the VCR I have had since 1984! It sounds like a snowblower is outside my window when I play movies. Just my 2 cents.

I have one of these that has died... I would consider replacing it with another, but I'm a bit gunshy. The machine has great features and excellent performance. But mine broke down several times before its untimely death. And the picture quality on recording was slightly mediocre. The machine DID stand up to a LOT of use (we recorded endless hours of soaps and Babylon 5). The on-screen menus were not as good as the could have been, but worked reliably. But here I am getting another machine... and I'm not sold on the picture quality of this unit. ::sigh:: It's probably perfect for most people. If you rent a movie or two a week, this is the unit for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Acceptable SONY Unit, March 1, 2007

They are getting harder to find but I still love to comparison shop this stuff. I still make it a point to check out VCRs and the like whenever I get a chance to get out to an electronics store. The quality and dependability of SONY's VCRs unfortunately fluctuates exasperatingly. SONY made some very good VCRs in the past. SONY's SLV-679HF VCR demonstrates a genuine effort to return to the type of quality product they were once known for with some good features.

My daughter's roommate owns one of these units as it so happens and this unit makes very good recordings. Pre-recorded tapes look excellent as well. What really impressed me was the playback image of EP recordings. I observed that black & white movies recorded in EP look better than those recorded in SP, which is a little hard to explain, but others agreed on that point. I have found this true of all the recent SONY VCRs that I have seen on the market since 2002.

Unfortunately, I could not find many of these units on the shelf anymore. They were out there once I suppose and then they seem to have vanished. This VCR, the one I saw, really impressed me.

I have to agree with everyone else. This VCR is amazing. I can't believe that a VCR of this caliber is at such a low price. You won't regret getting this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not satisfied..., April 8, 2000

This machine is fine for watching movies or setting up the timer to tape programs while you're out; however, for my taping purposes (trying to tape specific segments of shows) I find it very frustrating. There is no memory function for the counter so I continually need to adjust the tape's position myself, and there is an annoying delay upon pressing record and the machine does not start recording immediately (missing things when trying to hit record on a program coming back from a commericial break when I paused/stopped it). A few other annoying details as well; I will be going back to Magnavox next time.

If you are in the market for a top name VCR, you owe it to yourself to consider this one. Quality, simplicity, and pricemake this THE best VCR you can buy. The picture is crystal clear, even in pause mode. Slow motion and fast fwd are equally clear. Setup took about 10 minutes. If you have a home theater system, put "Saving Private Ryan" in this VCR and pipe it through your surround sound speakers. You will feel as if you are storming the beaches at Normandy. You NEED this VCR!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, August 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony SLV-679HF VCR (Electronics)
The product was in excellent condition. The seller couldn't have been more accommodating. Even when my lack of knowledge caused me a little problem with setting up the remote, the seller contacted me and walked me through it. Now I'm taping to my heart's content. I'm very happy with my experience on Amazon.

First of all, when I opened the box there was no user guide, and when I installed it to watch a movie there was alot of snow, I tried to adjust the tracking and there was still snow. The sound was terrible. This has been a very disappointing experience for me.
