3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special
I purchased this to replace a Panasonic DVD player and found an incredible differance. The remote control in laid out without any thought or reason for DVD playing. Fumbling and staring for the correct button is always necessary. Slow motion playback of DVD's is terrible. I am using the HDMI output, but the video quality is not as good as the Panasonic standard video...

5.0 out of 5 stars Single Cable HDMI and other Incredible Features, October 4, 2006

This review is from: Sony SLVD570H DVD/VCR Combo Player with HDMI (Electronics)
This unit has a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) that allows the user to interface with a video monitor or TV with an HDMI input. HDMI uses a single cable to transfer an uncompressed pure digital A/V signal. This unit also supports Component, Composite, S-Video and RF interfaces which makes it virtually compatible with any TV. This is incredible. It also plays standard DVDs, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW, Audio CDs, VCD/SVCD, CD-R/RW discs with MP3 music or JPEG picture files. The VCR side features time recording in SP or EP speeds. It also plays back tapes recorded in SP, LP and EP speeds and will also play back S-VHS tapes in quasi S-VHS mode. This unit utilizes four 19-micron video heads which optimize EP recording. It also has a very fast flash rewind. The DVD side does not have picture zoom but that is of little consequence because this player is designed for use with HD monitors. This is one of the best DVD-VHS Combination Units I have ever seen.

I really did not do much homework before buying this item, but had a new HDTV and needed a new HD DVD to go with it. It was so easy to hook up. We just used the cord that came with it and movies are perfect. Be sure to study manual and play with Cinema settings (recommended). You can leave it on standard, but some movies look a tad better with the Cinema, etc. VCR recordings are not bad either. You can still watch a DVD while recording a VHS same as 2 seperate components. I would have given 5 stars except for one thing,,,,,Dvd open/close seems like it takes forever......actually it doesn't, but not used to a delay. Hope this helps someone

5.0 out of 5 stars ~ So Far, So Good!~, January 18, 2007
This review is from: Sony SLVD570H DVD/VCR Combo Player with HDMI (Electronics)
This DVD/VCR has been up and running for a month now. Unlike the last one, another brand which died after a few months, ~ the DVD player would not read the disc anymore ~ this unit works just fine: picture, sound, controls, remote, etc., do the job. Also: it's connected through a cable box, and 34" Sony HD TV. Check back with me in a year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super HDMI Combo, December 27, 2006

We love only having one extra video player. This set works well and DVD images are spectacular. If even makes original Scooby-Doo videos crystal clear on our 50" Plasma.

When switching to the HDMI signal there are times you have to turn the set off and then back on but from my research this is normal for HDMI signals.

I have never had any problems with this unit. It loads fast, has a great picture on my Toshiba 40" Narrow Bezzel LCD, and is easy to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD playback/ only so-so VCR Quality, March 9, 2007

I bought this unit to replace a similar product (without HDMI upconversion) made by Toshiba. DVD playback on this unit is extremely good. Quality of image is truly amazing for such an inexpensive product. I have a Sony 34 inch CRT Wega HDTV and the combination of the two is visually astounding at times. Component inputs look almost as good as the HDMI. I use both, so in the rare instance when the DVD player can't scale the image properly, I can use the other inputs as 'plan B' .
My only real gripe is with the VCR part of this combo. First and foremost, the recording quality is decent, but nowhere near as good as VCR's I have owned in the past. I use premium TDK tapestock and have excellent bandwidth coming out of my cable. The picture is just so so. Playback of factory made tapes is very good, MUCH better than the unit itself is capable of recording. I guess the days of really good VCR's are coming to a close.
ALSO, there is a software glitch with the VCR that does not enable the user to turn on or off the ' timer record ready' indicator. As such, the unit will record all programs in it's memory whether you want it to or not. Such as when your weekly show is a rerun. You have to delete that program from memory, OR you can always remove the tape resulting in an annoying flashing red light until you put another tape in. It is obviously a software bug, but VERY annoying. I almost sent this back because of it.
But in the end, the stellar performance of the DVD player has satisfied me enough to continue using it. It really DOES look great and would probably be a step up for anyone wanting to upgrade to an HDMI capable player. FIVE STARS for the DVD player and maybe THREE for the VCR.. One more thing, the remote is about as clunky and unuser friendly as you would want to get!

3.0 out of 5 stars World's smallest optical output jack., December 8, 2006
This review is from: Sony SLVD570H DVD/VCR Combo Player with HDMI (Electronics)
So small, it's not even there! That being said, the lack of bundled anything such as even a simple composite cable means that out of the box, you're lucky if you can even watch anything without extremely poor fidelity driving you mad.

Other than that, it's typical Sony, though. Looks classy as far as DVD players go. It's not huge, not unrealistically small. The remote is decent, although the upper half is extremely dense with buttons. Thankfully, most people won't use most of those buttons ever. Much less with any frequency.

Overall, I was obviously unsatisfied as I specially purchased the unit for its presumed optical audio outputs. The joke's on me this time around.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sony combo DVD player?VCR, August 26, 2007
This review is from: Sony SLVD570H DVD/VCR Combo Player with HDMI (Electronics)
I bought this player because I wanted a combo. I was looking for one that I could use with my surround sound player. This unit said Surround Sound, but when I tried to hook it up I found that it was only simulated surround sound. I gave up trying to use it and bought another brand.
