And boy, it sounds AMAZING.

I would go as far to say that this is probably the best sounding small-to- midsize bluetooth speaker on the market as of April 2014.

I was never a fan of Sony music products until I happened to hear this portable compact bluetooth speaker while strolling through Target -- which now has a surprisingly large offering of portable bluetooth speakers. The build quality of this Sony SRS-X5 is solid and commands respect for high quality and though weighty, it certainly is not too heavy to compromise its portability. If you enjoy the deep room-consuming sound of Dr. Dre's Beatbox, you will then thoroughly also enjoy the high crip, clear trebles and the surprisingly deep reaching bass that has surprising depth and substance for such a thin unit (about 1.5 inches or so). Most bluetooth speakers this size offer a listener either muffled hollow bass, or an artifical bass that lacks the ability to reach true low decibles that one would only hope to hear a hint with a speaker this size. However, this will not disappoint. In fact, of the dozen or so bluetooth speakers I have heard, this is the first one of this small size to offer such range of bass to trebles.

Now, as one who appreciates the best sound quality without being fiscally ridiculous, I always look for the "Wow" factor when I listen to speakers. In fact, I was very close to taking the leapt to purchase the Bose Soundlink Mini, which gave me a "Hmmm...that sounds pretty good" reaction - for the small size footprint. On the other hand, the Sony SRS-X5 instantly game me the "WOW!" reaction. The spectrum of sound was surprising - particularly for me since I don't prefer Sony products. I would go as far to say that this is probably the best sounding small-to- midsize bluetooth speaker on the market as of April 2014. Now, if you expect the sound quality of an expensive home theater system, you have unrealistic expectations.

A bit of background: I always listen to music as I'm falling asleep, and up until this purchase, I used an Altec Lansing IM510 Speaker System as a beside speaker, hooked to my Sansa Fuze or Galaxy S4. I am no audiophile, but I know what I like, and though the Altec Lansing was inexpensive and very portable, it always bothered me a little that it lacked in fullness and bass response.

When I started looking around for a replacement, all I seemed to find were speakers with no readily-changeable batteries (like AAs), so after a great deal of time spent comparing the multitude of different offerings, I decided I would need to up my budget if I hoped to be happy with a new speaker. I found a YouTube video (well, several) that compared the apparent "king", the Bose SoundLink Mini, to various challengers. I've always thought of Bose products as overpriced for what they deliver, so I was fairly certain there had to be something better for the buck. I've always been happy with my Sony products over the years, and since I already own three Sony boomboxes and love their warm, full sound, I sought out the Sony portable speaker offerings.

After deciding against the Sony SRSBTX300 Portable NFC Bluetooth Wireless Speaker System (Black) due to its size, I noticed the new line of Sony portables, only just introduced. The SRS-X5 is the "baby bear" of the three new models, and it seemed to fit my needs perfectly - it's very nearly the same footprint on my nightstand as the Altec Lansing. After watching the YouTube comparison ([...

Let me first state that I've read countless reviews of different units and have come to the conclusion that every well reviewed unit has its strengths and will create a unique sound. I have a finite budget (and patience), so I was only able to compare a select few in my own home. I originally went into a local store to check out the UE lineup after hearing my friends Mini UE Boom. While browsing in my big-box store, I came across the Sony SRSX5 and the UE Boom. Both sounded terrific, but for the money I was about to spend, I wanted to try them in real life within my own home (and patio).

**UPDATE TO REVIEW***

UE Boombox - I purchased a refurbed unit as a gift for family, but the real intent was for me to also pitch this against the Sony and newer UE Boom (looks silver..blue ends with a handle)

Sound

Sony SRS-X5 - The Sony has far better bass response and overall sound compared to the UE Boom. Once the units are beyond the 50% level on the volume, the UE Boom's treble and vocals begin to overwhelm the lower frequencies. The Sony starts off fairly rich and maintains more bass all the way to the max volume. If you listen to this in the store, you should know that the Sony is louder when plugged in (maybe 20% louder). It loses some of the punch it has when on batteries alone. I do wish the vocals were a little more sharp on the Sony, but I can't overlook the lack of bass in the UE Boom. The Sony does have some button that cleans up the bass and skews the response to the mid to highs. One gripe we had is that different songs seem to prefer a different setting, so if you REALLY want to get the best result, you may toggle it for a particular musician.

UE Boom - The Boom has amazing clarity at mid to high frequencies.
