What CD offered in sound quality and portability, it lacked in capacity. In contrast, MP3s enabled music transfer and sharing, but required compression leading to significant sound quality loss. Via lossless, digital capture of analog sounds, it's now possible to reproduce performances exactly as intended-the power of a live performance or the presence of a studio session.

Music maximized

Music maximized

Revitalize your favorite music tracks with two Sony-unique audio technologies: DSEE-HX revitalizes high-frequency audio response and upscales existing audio signals (MP3, ACC, ATRAC, and WMA) to Hi-Resolution levels. Via, the SongPal APP, ClearAudio+ renders a vibrant sound field with immersive bass, full mids, and pronounced highs.

Enjoy powerful sound

Enjoy powerful sound

Seven, specially-tuned speakers paired with dedicated S-Master HX digital amplification circuitry deliver faithful wide-frequency audio reproduction: Four Super Tweeters a Hi-Resolution sound stage4, two Magnetic Fluid, Mid-Range drivers full melodies, while a Subwoofer with dual passive radiators brings a precise and powerful low end.

The balance is lovely, mid-tones are present without being overwhelming, and you get clear and precise detail.

On the other hand, AirPlay also works well and in conjunction with Apple's Remote app this is a convenient solution.

Spotify sounds really good on this speaker, especially if you configure Spotify for "extreme" audio quality.

Now this is an interesting unit, Sony's top of the range wireless speaker. It grabbed my attention because it is not just a Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay speaker, but also the entry-level device in Sony's push for high resolution audio, billed as better than CD quality. Get all the ducks in line, and you can play DSD (the format of SACD) downloads directly through this device, or high-resolution PCM at up to 32-bit/192kHz. It has the speaker technology to go with it too: sub-woofer for deep bass (within the limitations of a small box), and super tweeters for extended high frequencies up to 40kHz though I cannot find detailed specifications from Sony). Note that this is well beyond what humans can hear.

The unit is also flexible to the point of confusion. Here are the ways you can play back music:

- Via Apple AirPlay: play from iTunes over an wired or wireless network using Apple's proprietary protocol.

- Via Bluetooth from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as smartphones or tablets. Uses A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Protocol) for best quality.

- From a DLNA-compliant music server on your network. Sony's free Media Go will do, but there are quite a few of these around.

- Via audio in using an old-fashioned 3.5mm jack cable.

- Via direct attached USB storage. I had limited success with this, but did manage to play some FLAC files from a USB stick.

- Via a direct USB connection to a PC or Mac. In this mode the unit is a USB DAC. This is how you get the very best quality.

Supported formats are MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV, FLAC, and DSD via USB after firmware update.

So how is the out of box experience? The first thing you notice is that this thing is heavy - 4.6kg.

The Sony SRSX9 WiFi speaker system is outstanding. The fact that Sony took three years to develop this system clearly shows the level of commitment it has to hi-def audio. Everything about this speaker -- from the excellent build quality to the huge number of supported audio codecs -- is top notch. Connectivity is easy; everything from Apple Airplay to Bluetooth and direct connection with a cable is provided. I favor Airplay over any of the other options. Airplay is simple to set up and it is solid and dependable. I have also attached a thumb drive with hi-def FLAC files to the USB port. These FLAC files are 24-bit, 192MHz -- and they sound absolutely amazing on this speaker. This system is capable of putting out more than 150 watts across several Class D amplifiers; it does not distort at high listening levels. Spotify sounds really good on this speaker, especially if you configure Spotify for "extreme" audio quality. The only "weak link" in the SRSX9 speaker system is the app that Sony provides for iOS and Android devices. While SongPal is functional and gets the job done, it is a bit confusing and clumsy at times. Overall, the Sony SRSX9 is an absolute delight. I have compared it to other speaker systems in this category and, for the price, it can't be beat. Highly recommended!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Sony's SRS-X9 (X9) is a beast! I don't think I've ever said such a thing about a single speaker. And honestly, no one really does. The problem that arises when you try to force a huge soundstage into such a small package is that the "air" of the music suffers. The sound just seems so unrealistically condensed. But the X9 sounds incredible, thanks to its seven speaker design. Two tweeters are on top of a lovely glossy finish and five sit just behind its removable grill in the front. The amp is 154 W. The X9 has slight warmness to it, but that's OK because you still get such a punch to what you are listening to.

There's a force with the X9 that you just shouldn't get from a one-stop shop speaker, at least none that I've come across, especially when playing FLAC. The balance is lovely, mid-tones are present without being overwhelming, and you get clear and precise detail. The tweeters on top handle classical strings excellently without digging into unwanted shrills. But if you're not one for FLAC the X9 still gives your MP3s a boost. The X9 does its best to capture what it can from your condensed MP3s, and for trying to give them more "air" it succeeds. I played Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song (MP3) just to hear if the intro still charges before collapsing on itself like a glorious wall of bricks and the X9 comes pretty close to bringing that experience with an MP3 file. It's great to feel that energy from an MP3 played at a loud volume without heavy distortion. There is some distortion present, but again, it is nowhere near overwhelming and is to be expected. The X9 alleviates a strong yearning to play my favorite albums in FLAC. I still prefer FLAC, especially for jazz. But when I just want to hear the music, I won't be upset if an MP3 sneaks into rotation.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Sony SRSX9 is unlike any semi-portable wireless speaker on the market. Forget everything you know about speakers like the Jambox Big, the Bose Soundtouch or even higher end speakers like the Sonos Play 5 - the SRSX9 blows them away.

Sadly, that also brings you to one of the larger problems I have with the X9 - the audio is indeed impressive, but it is still compact wireless speaker, and despite its 7 separate speakers, you can still tell that you are listening to a portable (in concept) speaker. Stereo separation is minimal, and without a subwoofer, the bass is limited to what the 7 elements can produce.

Then there is the price - at $699, you really have to have a need for some of the more advanced features like high resolution playback.

Make no mistake - if you just want to pair your phone and stream off Spotify or Pandora, then this speaker will NOT come to its best in your use case. In fact, with "normal" 192kbps streaming off Spotify over Bluetooth (with a phone that supports aptX), I could not really hear the difference between the Sonos Play5 and the X9.

The real difference in audio becomes apparent when you plug in something that takes advantage of the higher def playback options. I started with a simple FiiO E17 using USB OTG on my Galaxy S5 and played a FLAC file. In this case, audio was much clearer, and segments of a the same song really "popped" when compared to the low res files.

Sony does provide access to "Songpal", an app that is supposed to assist in routing existing audio apps to the speaker. In theory this sounds great, but like many Sony apps, it isn't all that well made, and I found it much easier to just connect directly.
