Great Speakers At A Great Price!,
By Duncan Idaho "Spend time with your kids. It ... (College Station, Texas. Home of the Fighting Texas Aggies!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony SSF-7000 Floor-Standing 4-way Speaker with 8" Woofer (Pair) (Electronics)
Purchased and Received these speakers just a couple days ago. The free shipping was great considering the weight of the speakers.
They are great! No complaints here. I was upgrading from my original aiwa speakers (made by sony) in my home entertainment system. The difference is amazing. Highs mids and lows are all great. I always recommend a powered sub woofer, I do have one. However, if you get these speakers you can get by without one. My listening interests are varied. I have listened to Kiss, ELO, The Hollies, Peter Frampton, Supertramp and some classical on these speakers so far. I have also viewed a couple movies using them. All sounded great. "Do You, (Feel Like I Do) sounded GREAT! All the ELO was crisp, clean and clear. The only "booming," as mentioned in the other review, that I heard was while listening to "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" by the Hollies. However, it did appear to be a bass sound that was appropriate with the song, not anything abnormal. But then again, it may just be different taste. Oh, and the picture shows the speaker as looking more of a grey than black. They are black, not the grey like the picture shows. that is good since my tv and all my entertaiment system units are all black. My advice is you cannot go wrong with these. If anything changes I will update.

I bought these because a consumer magazine rated the performance of this model's predecessor a "best buy" in floor standing speakers. They even beat out some very expensive Polks for sonic accuracy. After getting them installed, they didn't disappoint. Excellent highs and more than adequate bass especially considering the price paid.

UPDATE: after running these for just over a year - lets clear up alot of the ASTOUNDING reviews. Realize that to get the best sound out of any speaker does not begin with the speaker itself but with the amp/receiver that pushes them. I would NOT buy these to plug into some home theater kit bundle receiver - that wont cut, even just on the power rating alone. One of the main reasons why I wrote a favorable review is due to the fact that the Sony's are connected to Yamaha's highest - rated receiver which pushes a clean 140w x channel. Thus, my review may not be a typical review of what to expect in sound quality. That said, the Sony's do an incredible job managing sound in their application as a part of my 7.1 setup, much of that can be chalked up to a quality amp which makes the 7000's sound so much better.Cut to the chase: these speakers require a heck of a lot of EQ'ing (and power) to sound GOOD. You most likely will need a subwoofer to assist in most situations. They are a perfect set of cheap speakers to complement a smaller home theater system (im not talking like 2-inch cube Panasonic bundle kits, but a nice polk or JBL mid line 5.1 speaker system). In buying these speakers, its a great addition for music listening. Standing alone, not sure the Sony's can work a room without the help of other components or a fantastic top-shelf amp. For those that dont care or just want something tall to fill an entertainment setup, the Sony's are perfect. Verdict: good budget buy, but do not expect the world out of the box. I now own the SSF-5, 6, and 7k. 5's are hooked up to a separate receiver, the 6's were hooked up to my central receiver (a $1600 Yamaha) and the 7's took the place of the 6's. I am impressed by the frequency response of the 7's. The low end is fuller of course and they handle the power coming out of my 7.1 receiver better. However, im less impressed with the mid range. Its not as dead on as the 6's and if you move about the room, the harmonics and sound direction change too much. The high end is nice because the speaker is taller than the 6's. I can't tell any difference between the hi's in the 6's and the 7's. The low end, like some reviewers have stated is in fact BOOMY; but this is what you get with a budget EIGHT INCH woofer. Smart and precise equalization is required to get the 7's sounding really good. I spent an hour doing a manual EQ setting distance, independent speaker levels (like LF, RF, LR, sub ETC) EQ'ing each, and finally arrived at a sonically sound room. I then used the Yamaha's auto tune function with microphone to see what the receiver would come up with. To my surprise, pretty similar settings. Where the 6's did not leave many dead spots in basically a perfect 15 x 15 room, the 7's left many pockets of dead air, especially dead center. Took alot of sub & front tuning to clear this up. In conclusion: I honestly would purchase the SSF-6000's again as their sound is warmer and more even. Those handle 180W, the 7000's handle 200W. If you need a broader bigger sound for a bigger space, the 7000's will do the trick, but i find they initially lack smack and punch in the low end and the mids are scattered. I have a JBL powered 12 inch sub (their higher end) and it helped but did not fix the booming, still working on the tuning. Make sure you have enough power from your amp to these things, they need it. I decided to see what my [...] would buy, the Sony's do no disappoint, short of spending 1200 on a pair of floor JBL's, these do just fine in their own right.

Blown away-,

This review is from: Sony SSF-7000 Floor-Standing 4-way Speaker with 8" Woofer (Pair) (Electronics)
I'm not the foremost authority on speakers or anything, but I listened to about 30 or 40 pairs of speakers trying to nail down where to start my home theater upgrade. I didn't want to spend 300 bucks on a single speaker, so that ruled out several brands that produce high-end floor speakers.
I was becoming dismayed until I heard the ssf-5000's (the single woofer model) and decided that I should give sony a shot. I hunted down a pair of the 7000's and wow. I almost couldn't wait the 10 days it took to get them home. It's amazing what a good set of floorstanding speakers will do for an audio system. The sound from these suckers is just so BIG. Granted it's not Klipsch or Polk, but for someone trying to build a home theater system on a budget, you will not be disappointed. These will fill a medium sized room with rich sound. I don't have any complaints about these speakers at all. Everything from Guitar Hero II to Transformers to Mozart sound rich and full like they should. If you have the money to spend these probably aren't going to do it for you, but if you're looking for speakers you don't need to take out a loan for, these are it.

Good Design + Inexpensive Parts + Economies of Scale = Bargain,

Sony isn't known for speakers, and that's to your benefit. If they were, you'd pay 50-75% more and pat yourself on the back for being so discerning. As it is, the SS-F7000 is a notable bargain.
There are a lot of really awful tower speakers in this price range, but don't lump Sony in this group. Instead of dialing in booming bass and sizzling treble to make them sound exciting in-store (and inevitably fatiguing at home), the designers have managed to coax accurate, undistorted sound out of a pedestrian parts budget. The good design choices and economies of scale let this mass-produced speaker compete on an even basis with recognized mid-fidelity brands. These speakers are fairly neutral, accurate, and low-distortion. In other words, no frequencies are grossly accentuated or absent. Instead, the sound character is shaded a bit towards crisp and dry, rather than warm and lush, which is good for articulation of dialog in home theater applications (where I imagine most of these will end up, rather than in two-channel music systems). The bass is adequate and decently tight for a bass-reflex (ported) design, but if you're after full-range sound and want loud, undistorted bass, you'll probably want to add a good subwoofer (I use them with a subwoofer that costs almost three times what they do and consider it money well spent). The midrange is commendably flat, and while treble lacks the air of an audiophile speaker that costs ten times as much, neither does it beam, sizzle, or glare like many budget tweeters inflicted on the listening public. Three other things about the sound: First, these speakers sound their best at moderate-and-higher volume levels, where the bass develops some punch. At low background levels (ironically where more colored speakers sound fuller), they sound a bit flat. Second, they sound a lot better on vertical axis - with the tweeters at ear level -- but horizontal dispersion is pretty forgiving. Third, sound-staging is not notably wide, but again, this is not audiophile territory. The speakers are tall, but hardly an imposing presence in the way of many big speakers. If your room allows it, place them a couple or three feet away from walls. One quality note: I was dismayed that the speaker grill frame broke in two places the second time I very gently removed it (something that hasn't happened in 30-plus years with dozens of different speakers). Unless they redesign it, leave the grille cloth on or you're taking your chances. Considering the price, however, I won't deduct a star for this. If you want accurate, non-fatiguing sound for grown-ups at a price any teen with a lawnmower can afford, look no further.

Great Price but Bad Low Frequency Resonance,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony SSF-7000 Floor-Standing 4-way Speaker with 8" Woofer (Pair) (Electronics)
The reviews for the previous model, SSM-F750H, were good so I bought a pair of these to replace my retreaded Advents. I listen to a wide range of music including 70's & 80's rock & roll, jazz, new age, and classical. The SSF-7000 reproduce highs, mids, and upper lows great. However, there is a significant resonance on very low frequencies that causes the speaker to boom on the low end. I'm 54 so maybe it's just an age thing but booming bass is not what I want to hear. I bought a pair of Polk Monitor 70s and did a side by side and found the Polk's much better. Its too bad because the SSF-7000s did such a great job on everything but the very low end. I had to pay almost 3 times the price of the SSF-7000s to get the Polk Monitor 70s.

Good for Music, Better for Movies,
By
This review is from: Sony SSF-7000 Floor-Standing 4-way Speaker with 8" Woofer (Pair) (Electronics)
The first thing you will notice when you get these is the size (Height) these are defiantly "towers" in every regard. I have owned many speakers throughout the years, but not many had the full range clarity these do, they seem to 'come alive' on just about anything video games, Movies, Music, ect.. and they can get LOUD if you wire them correctly. I am no stereo guru but I know great sound when I here it, I scoped the more higher end stuff first, everything from Polk, Infinity, Kef, Omnisat, even Focal which was featured in stereo review this year. It is amazing to think these are SONY speakers, for one I'd never been a fan of their products but this does not sound like sony! add that to the many good reviews = Me buying them and Im glad i did! sure you can get 'better speakers' i.e. a little bit more 'boom' but for you buck you will not find anything even remotely as good as these. All in all it depends what your listening tastes are if your into Rock you will love these because of the crystal highs and a good 'punch' of Bass to fill your room or whatever. Movies on the other hand, is where these shine it's probably been said many times before but when viewing a movie you hear things that you may have never herd before the multi-faceted range is amazing it is a "Things are coming at you" (you are in the action) type of feeling, and if you have a Sub (I recommend the SW-12 Infinity) forget about going to the movies your at the movies! Just make sure you have the right hook-up Monster Cable is a must. The only thing I did not like about these is the cheesy puny wires it comes with you need THICK wires for good sound reproduction, other then that these are a steal for the money nobody and I mean nobody (to my knowledge) has put out something with this good of quality sound plus the price to top it off. It's like 'paying for a SONY product' the only difference is that your getting POLK AUDIO Sound!!! Absolutely Recommended. Just wanted to add you can use them as fronts or surrounds dose not matter they sound good either way. Don't be a fool and spend hundreds more Buy Them while you can!

I purchase those speakers recently to replace some aging bookshelves speakers. Let me tell first that I am blown away by the quality of these speakers. I bought these set mainly because of its positive reviews but I was a little worried about their low price compared to similar items. I must say I was not deceived a bit. The speakers came promptly, well package and without any damage. The outside appearance is simple and neutral.
Some reviewers have complained about a low frequency resonance, I personally have not noticed it, I actually decided to retired my subwoofer because the bass provided by those speakers are plenty enough for my taste.

I'm no expert, but I know what I hear. These speakers are clear and accurate. I can hear all the different musical instruments in the orchestra with so much clarity and accuracy now than I used to with my old BOSE speakers. Violins, flute, horns, harp, guitars, cello, xylophone, chimes, drums, clarinet... they all sound like they are supposed to, not colored and muddied up in one blend of painful, indistinguishable orchestral noise. Try playing your favourite band or orchestra CD and you'll know what I mean. For the price I paid, $216- delivered, these speakers are excellent value... I highly recommend them.

I was always an anti-sony person but I gave these a shot after seeing the price and reviews. I usually shell out the extra money for big name brands and hyped products and I think this is my favorite purchase of them all. I don't think I've ever been more satisfied with a purchase before. These speakers sound amazing! If you're using them in a smaller room I don't think a subwoofer is even necessary. These speakers are great!
