"if shooting vertical shots annoy you with the stock neck strap but dont want to compromise the grip and safety of your alpha, then this is the one for you."

[4.5] because the tough plastic mounted underneath which secures the hand grip is a bit bulky for me..but i can live with that. The positives: Let me start off by saying the leather part used in here "smells" expensive because only genuine leather is used unlike the cheaper imitation. If you still want to use a neck strap with this, it is still possible with the extra metal holder on top. YES, battery compartment is still accessible, and YES there is still a hole if you want to mount this on a tripod, and another YES you can attach this even if you have those Vertical Grip (length strap is adjustable, and hides excess strap inside with Velcro) great place to shop and great service, but you might want to try outside "just to see if its of good value to you" but if this review or all other reviews aftr me convinces you, then by all means, Add it to your Cart.

I've been using this for about 6 months... when I first installed it (super easy installation) I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, but I quickly got used to sliding my hand through it and I LOVE it now!!! I never use my neck strap anymore simply because with this product, it stays snugly and securly on my hand. It also makes the camera and my hand much steadier when I use my heavy Carl Zeiss lens. I definitely recommend this product!!!

Before I purchased this hand grip I tried to google as much information as I can. I also tried looking up youtube videos, pictures, and anything that would help me make a decision. My main fear was that the grip would not fit properly unless you had a vertical grip. I have both the A99 and A55 without vertical grips. Fortunately the hand grip worked wonderfully. Let me explain why and hopefully this will help you make your decision.

I don't really think it matters how big or small your hands are or how long or short your fingers are. The grip does not need to be installed very tight. In fact it should be installed a little loose so that you are able to hit the shutter button as well as all the wheels and buttons without feeling restricted at all. So this is how you install it. Install the part into the shoulder ring and install the bottom part into the tripod mount. Put your right hand through the grip and hold onto your camera. Position the grip pad over your right hand knuckles but a little lower, just a little bit away from your fingers. Now pretend like you are going to take a picture and pretend like you are going to look at the picture you just took...meaning use your index finger to press the shutter to see if it is comfortable and not restricted and use your thumb to press the buttons in the back to view a picture to see if that is comfortable and not restricted. If your hands feel restricted, you need to loosen the top or the bottom and how to determine whether to loosen the top or the bottom depends on where the pad is positioned on your knuckles. It must go over all your knuckles. Similarly if it is too loose you need to tighten it until it is just right and the pad is over all your knuckles.

I got this as a Christmas gift and was eager to try it out on my camera. I attached it to the camera and slid my hand in but it did not feel right. The camera was secure but I could not move my fingers to reach the shutter button. If I slid my hand out a bit so I could reach the shutter button the strap was no longer tight. I tried loosening the strap but that did not help, although I could reach the controls it still felt weird and was not tight enough to provide any support while holding the camera and it did not make it feel any more secure. However my dad tried using the camera with the strap and he thought it was fine, I think his hands are meatier than mine so the strap was tighter on him yet his fingers could still reach the controls. The build quality is excellent and they seem to have thought of everything with the tripod mound and ability to use it with the battery grip, but I do not think the fit is right for everyone. My suggestion is to try it first or buy it from a store with a good return policy, Amazon included, so you can return it if it does not work for you.

This hand strap is a replacement from the older Sony model which had a smaller leather hand grip. This new model is excellent for all the same reasons the older one was. The strap is made of high quality materials, and is pretty light, too, so you don't have to worry about adding additional weight to your camera when using it. The strap is also fairly small: the photo makes it appear perhaps a bit larger than it really is.

As you can read in all the other reviews, this little strap attaches to the right-side anchor point on your alpha camera, and the other side screws into the tripod mount at the bottom of the camera. (The part which screws into the trip mount is reverse fitted with an additional tripod mount below it, so you can still use a tripod with the strap in place. The plastic mount component, too, is extremely light, yet feels extremely solid.) You can further attach your shoulder belt to the camera, as well, using the small metal part supplied with this strap. This means you can use your camera either with just the hand strap alone, or with both the hand strap and the shoulder belt attached at the same time.

When attached, the strap allows you to carry your camera with one hand, yet have the additional safety of the strap around the back of your hand. This approach liberates you from should harnesses and belts, and can revolutionize how you use your camera. It's a shame that the device is not supplied with every camera Sony sells!

We can gripe a little about the price. When you look at the strap as an overall package, probably $30 would have been a good price point (and do some research to see what Nikon ans Canon charge for some of their straps, and be prepared to be shocked when you do). However, you can get the grip from Amazon at better than retail, and when you consider it's quality and usability, it's an easy five star recommendation.
