Sony STR-DE598 FM Stereo/FM-AM Receiver

I love everything about it except for the menu system. Everything is interlinked. For example, when the front speakers are set to a certain volume, the back can't go any higher than the front setting. Also, the menu system is not very navigable. I'd rather have an equalizer menu with separate settings for different frequencies. The only ones available are bass and treble. Otherwise the system is solid and delivers awesome sound. I just don't like the menu system and how the settings are not very easily tailored to a listener's specific taste. I would rate this 4 stars because of the sound which is its main function.

This AV unit is a good value for the money. If you do not need higher quality S-video switching. The unit has very good sound quality and trouble free to set up.

You can't beat the price on this for the options you can create with it. It was a bit confusing at first for me as I'm not terribly experienced with things like this. The manual helped somewhat. A few late nights later, employing alot of determination and caffiene I have my computer hooked into my Bose speakers as well as a little amp to my turntable. Not so many years ago, radios and receivers came in seperate units taking up more space than was convenient. This unit is both attractive and much more compact than that. IN ADDITION, you can configure it to work with a universal remote. Very nice.
I agree with a previous reviewer about retail price differences between merchants. I paid $200 while amazon offers it for $150.
It's a great receiver to grow with as time goes by. There are any numbers of hookups in the back. IF I CAN FIGURE THIS THING OUT....well, so can you. When I'm a 90 year old shriveled up crone and want to upgrade my speakers again, I'll see if they make the manual in large print like Reader's Digest.

GOOD BUY BUT DONT BUY FROM BEST BUY.IT COST 200.00 THERE.I WISHED I HAD DISCOVERED AMAZON FIRST.ANYWHO,AS FAR AS THIS RECEIVER GOES IM NOT DISSAPOINTED IN ITS PERFORMANCE.THE SOUND IS FANTASTIC, THE OPTIONS ON DIFFERENT SOUNDS ARE MANY.

THE ONLY THING I DONT LIKE IS IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW THE SPEAKER CONNECTIONS IN THE BACK WORK,THEN IT WILL RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT. YOU HAVE TO TWIST THE CONNECTORS OUT ALL THE WAY OUT THEN STICK THE WIRE IN AT A SLANT AND THEN TWIST BACK AGAIN. ITS A LOT OF WORK JUST TO CONNECT A WIRE.

I am an audiophile that believes most modern amplifiers, such as this Sony, produce good sound. Perhaps not as good as some of the esoteric designs but better than merely acceptable. So what you are paying for in almost any receiver purchase are features and power. This amp has convenience and a well designed remote. That is the sum total of features. If that is all you need and the power, which will adequately fill most any residential room (unless you like your movies at 110 db), is appropriate for you, you can buy this receiver confident that it will give good service. You will note that I do not mention the AM/FM radio section. I have never tested it because the 6 channel movie sound is what I wanted and what I use. I will leave the radio review to someone to whom it is important.

Buying from Amazon was cheapest price especially with free shipping. Stepped up for more power per channel. Stayed in the Sony family. (Previous Sony surround, output to center speaker quit) Dislike the speaker hook ups in back, difficult to attach speaker wires and screw down connections. Overall happy with purchase.

When I got this receiver, I taught it might sound real bad since i only had two bookshelf speakers. I was very wrong when this receiver delivered full bass and tremble to my Extended Defenicion Sony Speakers. After about 2 months I got a Subwoofer which was incredible! The sound was as if it was coming out of the speakers! The bass was smooth and realistic, not punchy. After that I got a Super Audio CD Player from Sony and with my two bookshelf speakers on both sides of me, the sound was going around the room from my Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon 30 Anniversary Edition SACD. I must say the tremble is much more clear than I taught it would be. Only complaint is that in the summer, it gets a little hot when you use it for more than an hour at a time but that is no big deal to me.

I had this receiver for 9 month and I think it will stay as my main receiver for at least another 1-2 years!!

5 stars - unbeatable for it's price.

P.S. The music effects are kind of cool. They have an echo to them!
