Supporting more formats, more workflows, and more creative control than ever before, Vegas Pro 12 makes it easy to deliver your message and express your artistic vision.

From the Manufacturer

Professional Video Editing, Audio production, and DVD/Blu-ray Disc Authoring

Vegas Pro 12 is an integrated, forward-thinking production environment designed for a new generation of creative professionals. Combining a familiar track-based timeline with hundreds of thoughtful workflow innovations, Vegas Pro 12 is a refreshing, modern approach to post-production. Supporting more formats, more workflows, and more creative control than ever before, Vegas Pro 12 makes it easy to deliver your message and express your artistic vision.

Innovative editing tools

Edit SD, HD, 2K and 4K material in 2D or stereoscopic 3D, with drag-and-drop functionality or traditional 3-point and 4-point editing modes. The Vegas Pro 12 interface provides an impressive array of innovative tools and thoughtful touches, with a fully customizable workspace for accomplishing a wide range of production tasks. Nest Vegas Pro projects within the timeline, customize and save keyboard commands, and use application scripting to automate repetitive tasks. The new Expanded Edit Mode temporarily splits the track at the edit point and enables you to dynamically add or remove frames from either side of the edit point while the media is playing, creating a highly precise, interactive editing experience.

Powerful effect and compositing engine

Combine up to 32 high-quality, keyframeable effects per Effects Chain and apply them at the Event, Track, Media, or Project level. Vegas Pro 12 uses an advanced plug-in architecture based on the OpenFX standard, for hundreds of optional effects from leading visual effects developers. Parent-Child tracks and sophisticated 2D and 3D compositing modes provide a powerful, flexible effects environment. Shape Masking tools and FX Masking capabilities are new for Vegas Pro 12, along with the Color Match plug-in, to quickly match the color characteristics from one clip to another.

browse, select, and edit your video clips easily
Shape masking tools

While the Vegas Pro Bezier Masking Tool is powerful and accurate, it can be overly complex for masking simple shapes. The new rectangle/square and oval/circle Masking Tools make it easy to mask portions of the media by drawing the desired shape over the appropriate areas.

Stereoscopic 3D editing

Create breathtaking stereoscopic 3D projects with the same ease and agility as the Vegas Pro 2D workflow. Vegas Pro 12 provides the ability to easily import, adjust, edit, preview, and output stereoscopic 3D media — all using industry-standard professional delivery formats including single or dual files with side-by-side, top/bottom, or line-alternate encoding. Anaglyphic monitoring and output are also supported. Stereoscopic Auto-Pairing allows bulk pairing of stereoscopic 3D subclips on the timeline, with the ability to automatically pair stereoscopic 3D media created with the Sony PMW-TD300 or a pair of PMW-F3 cameras using the 3D Link feature.

Titler Pro 1.0 from NewBlueFX

Create high-quality titles with Titler Pro 1.0, a full-featured titling application from NewBlueFX. Titler Pro enables users to add animations, professional-style templates, and effects to their title sequences. Work in real-time with GPU-accelerated effects and transitions, and easily move text on the X, Y, and Z axes within the Vegas Pro 12 workspace. With 2D and 3D capabilities, Titler Pro 1.0 is the perfect addition to the stereoscopic 3D toolset.

Superior audio control

Access unlimited audio tracks, 24-bit/192 kHz audio, punch-in recording, 5.1 surround mixing, effects automation, and time compress/expand, while applying customizable, real-time audio effects like EQ, Reverb, Delay, and more. Expand your audio processing and mixing options with supported third-party DirectX and VST audio plug-ins. Vegas Pro 12 includes support for new 64-bit versions of Sony's Noise Reduction 2.0, Wave Hammer, Acoustic Mirror, and more. Use the Mixing Console for precise audio control, with sample-based accuracy.

Powerful Blu-ray Disc authoring (included with Vegas Pro 12 only; not included with Vegas Pro 12 Edit)

Burn movies to Blu-ray Disc directly from the Vegas Pro 12 timeline for high-definition delivery. Use DVD Architect Pro software to author DVD or Blu-ray Disc projects with subtitles, multiple languages, and numerous playback menus. Preview and test your work in real time. Import layered Photoshop .PSD files for buttons and other graphic elements. The MainConcept AVC encoder now supports variable bit rates up to 40 Mbps and average bit rate of 25 Mbps, for better HD quality than ever before.

Broad format support

Vegas Pro pioneered the concept of format-native editing, and the latest version continues that legacy by supporting today's most popular camcorder formats including XDCAM, NXCAM, AVCHD, HDCAM SR, DSLR h.264 QuickTime and RED. New for version 12 is support for Sony's XAVC 4K format, Panasonic P2 DVCPRO and AVC-Intra media. Projects can now be encoded to HDCAM SR MXF files, for pristine quality edit masters.

Designed for performance

64-bit operating systems are the best choice for high-end performance. By focusing exclusively on 64-bit operating systems, Vegas Pro 12 overcomes many of the limitations of legacy 32-bit software/hardware architecture, enabling users to enjoy superior performance and improved stability for memory-intensive projects and formats.

Working with OpenCL supported devices from AMD and NVIDIA, Vegas Pro 12 leverages GPU acceleration for video FX, transitions, compositing, pan/crop, track motion and encoding, providing a significantly faster workflow. GPU acceleration streamlines the video editing experience in Vegas Pro 12 by providing playback performance gains and faster rendering times, ideal for industry professionals who work on tight deadlines where every second counts.

Smart Proxy workflow

Create high-performance, edit-friendly Smart Proxy clips in the Project Media view, to achieve faster playback on a wider variety of hardware. Media will automatically and dynamically switch from original to proxy based on the Preview playback settings. To ensure optimum quality, original media files will be used for the final render.

Project interchange

Import and export a wide range of project files to and from Vegas Pro 12. The built-in software can convert between the native .veg file and AAF, for Avid ProTools, XML for Apple Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X (export only) and DaVinci Resolve 8, and .prproj for Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and After Effects CS6.

I bought Vegas Pro 12 from Sony's site, because I had v 9 and qualified for an upgrade price. Before v 12, I had very limited editing experience. I'd recently hired a professional crew to shoot educational video clips for my business. It was a simple shoot, just me in front of the camera answering questions. I thought, "I'll edit these videos with version 9."

But the crew gave me P2 files, which is a much higher quality format since they used a professional camera. Rather than ask them to convert P2 into a lower quality format that v 9 could read, I upgraded to v 12 so I could join the modern world and not worry about file formats.

- - - - - Pros and cons of Sony Vegas Pro - - - - -

- v 12 has so many options! And if it doesn't have the option you want, you can get software that works with Vegas Pro. Ex. I was just on Sony's site and saw an article on their tight integration with Hit Film, a tool that creates 2D and 3D Hollywood-quality visual effects. It's too fancy for me, but who knows, maybe later I'll want to create a rain sequence without needing to film a grey sky and rain.

- v 12 imports many file formats (i.e., P2!) directly into the software without some conversion process. Don't quote me on this, but I think that some competitors need to convert files before you can start editing, and that's a pain.

- Vegas Pro began life as an audio editor, and as any good video editor knows, audio is a huge part of video.

- Excellent multi-camera editing. If you're integrating video from multiple cameras, you'll love this feature. I watched a tutorial and was impressed at how quickly the guy could edit four different cameras.

- Multiple editing workflows for faster editing.

[Update: 4 Nov 2013: After the most recent software update from Sony, many of the earlier stability issues have receded.]

The installation went relatively smoothly. It is best if you have an active Internet connection.

Bringing media items into Vegas Pro was relatively easy.

Yes, as the other reviewers point out, there are a huge variety of options.

The problem comes with the outputs.

Eventually you have to stop dickering with a project and produce something.

I bought an HP Z800 with Quad processors, 6 Gbytes of RAM, a brand new installation of Win 7, etc. just to be able to use Sony products, including Vegas Pro.

[Update, with the software update, I have been able to produce movies. There are still some stability issues if you use video FX, but the product is much better. I recently did a four minute video and had to divide the four video tracks into three movies that were produced separately and then overlayed.]

In 25 projects, I have yet to be able to produce a single video file that is not seriously, seriously glitched in some way.

Often Vegas Pro simply freezes up, and the Task Monitor indicates that it is "not responding." Often the video will render, but then the video portion will "freeze" to a single frame while the audio continues playing.

I tried all of the on-line forums, changed settings to not use the GPU, to have zero memory set aside for previews, etc., but still not one single good video.

Much to my disappointment, the problems that I have having appear to be common in the on-line forums.

The one very good thing that comes with Vegas Pro is DVD Architect that allows a huge array of advanced techniques for producing DVDs.

I've been using Sony Vegas editing software for a few years now. I recently just upgraded from Pro 10 32bit to the Vegas 12 64bit version. The first thing that I noticed was the dramatic increase in speed in both rendering and playback preview. Before the upgrade, if I had a lot of transitions or effects then the preview screen would become very jerky. Those problems are long gone after the upgrade to 12. Not sure how much of that has to do with the 32bit vs 64bit - or if it was because V12 is optimized.

Some other nice features include "Layer dimensionality" - a new feature that makes your Text really POP. You can now add Bevels & effects that make the text look a lot more professional looking.

The masking features have also been updated, although I don't tend to do a lot with that feature.

Overall I am pretty happy with Vegas 12. It is definitely an upgrade over what I had previously. I am a Commentator on Youtube, and I render several videos per week. So far, Vegas Pro 12 has been extremely reliable with very few hiccups.

I've created a Video Review of Vegas 12 that I will link in a comment to this post (Because they don't allow links in the reviews themselves) - Check it out if your still on the fence.

I have used Sony Vegas extensively for over 4 years. I've encountered some difficulties with the software over the years, but this latest version is amazing.

Version 9 used to crash on me from time to time, but ran quickly on my system so I preferred it over Adobe Premiere.

Version 10 crashed less, but was less responsive on my system. Version 11 was a nightmare for me. Extremely slow rendering times!!

But with Version 12, I am a happy man!

PROS: Super fast, extremely reliable. It never crashes. Runs smoother than any previous version.

CONS: GPU acceleration does not work with my video card (GeForce 9800GTX). I must disable GPU acceleration when rendering, otherwise I get flashing and artifacts that appear in my videos.

RECOMMENDATION: Buy this program! If the price is too high, I recommend Sony's "Movie Studio 12" version. It's a fraction of the cost and still gives 75% of the functionality.

UPDATE - 04/29/13

I originally thought the GPU acceleration did not work properly with my video card. But I just did a clean install of Windows 8 and reinstalled Sony Vegas 12. Not sure if it's due to Windows 8 or the newest Radeon drivers, but the GPU acceleration works GREAT now! My rendering times have been cut by 1/3!
