Let me start by saying that I am a total techie geek, and have always gone after the biggest-best-latest-greatest systems. So my intentions in buying this one was just to have a lightweight travel machine with a decent monitor. I have been so pleasantly surprised!

The touch monitor is great - just perfect for the new Windows 8. The SSD drive means this notebook never gets hot. Ever. And that is a huge plus for me, having had some very uncomfortable moments with my Alienware laptop. And so lightweight - I can carry it in a shoulderbag which makes it really nice for traveling by plane.

The keyboard is great and touchpad works well too. I added the Microsoft Wedge Mouse which is Bluetooth enabled.

For those of you who've yet to try Windows 8, on this machine a reboot takes only seconds. Simply amazing. And it's recommended that instead of shutting down the system, you just close the monitor and put it to sleep. It wakes up immediately and I can start working without waiting for a system to boot up. This Ultrabook is ready to work when I am.

The battery life exceeds any laptop I've ever used. Another great plus.

When I think of all the time that I hauled around heavy laptops when I store most of my work in the Cloud, I enjoy this system even more. It's just beautiful and super efficient. And never HOT!

I got my laptop a few days ago and it exceeded all my expectations.
First setup is easy and quick, just pick your language and country and you're ready to go.
It is true that windows 8 is a bit different from what we are all used to, but it is a quick and beautifully designed OS, and with some adaptations you can even add the old start menu.
Keyboard is very comfortable to use and the touchpad works very well too, with some nice multi touch gestures (which are not unique to this specific laptop), I just wish the keyboard would have been back-lit.
The i7 processor combined with 8 GB of RAM and the SSD provide a quick experience for practically any standard application you may need (excluding maybe video and graphic editing or heavy gaming because this computer lacks a dedicated graphic processor).
I in my opinion the screen is more than adequate. I don't see any pixels and the colours are bright and vivid enough for me.
The touch screen works well and is very nice, but only time will tell if it is useful or only a gimmick.
Connectivity worked instantly for me. I just turned it on and it found a local wifi network and connected.
Didn't test its battery life yet, however this morning i left it in sleep mode fully charged and when i came back from work (about 13 hours later) the battery had only 5% left so note that sleep mode does consume energy.
In conclusion, I think this laptop is definitely a good choice for any user not planning on heavy gaming or graphical applications.
Great value for money!

Several days after writing the original review, my laptop onboard sound spontaneously died. Yes, it's right, a 1000$ laptop has a hardware issue after one week of standard use...

I bought this directly from sony store for a lower price with top-of-the-line configuration (i7, 8GB, 256GB). Performance as a computer is great and I like Windows 8 esp. with touch interface. However, 3 key issues with this ultrabook:

1. Fan spins all the time even when it is idle - you can talk to Sony but it is of no help and internet search will show you that all Sony laptops have this big issue and Sony has not clue on how to fix it for last few years.

2. Screen glares quite often - with most common office settings, it is often annoying. You can see the screen best only at certain angle and that angle can be the most glaring angle too - very annoying at times.

3. Keyboard is not backlit - well, for an ultrabook and its typical usage, it is an issue for me

I ordered this laptop from for my wife's b-day. Within a week, the cooling fan started making a low rattling noise. Since my wife kinda like the look, I called Sony requesting a replacement with a brand new unit. Customer service people are polite but not that helpful. I was transferred back and forth between tech dept and customer service. I spend almost 2 hrs on the phone with them and it seems they don't have such things as a replacement with a new unit.

I didn't want my ten days old laptop replaced with a refurbished one. So, I ended up returning it. It's a high end $1200 laptop and I was disappointed for having a problem within 10 days. I thought they would had higher quality control.

I would suggest to check this laptop out personally at a local store if possible before buying it. By buying locally it would save you a headache dealing with tech dept and customer service on the phone in case you had some problem with the laptop like I did.

Thanks for reading. Good luck..

I purchased this computer through the Sony website and paid the premium for 2-day shipping as Amazon was out. It seems to be everything it's advertised to be. Of course, Windows 8 is a learning curve, and IE 10 definitely has issues, but can't blame the computer for those things. My main beef with the computer is that it seems a bit shoddily constructed. The glass is unevenly set into the frame and I can feel sharp edges, and other parts have hard or sharp edges. The front corners are sharp and uncomfortable if you should happen to put your hands or wrists there. It's not a showstopper, but I expected more from a Sony product. To me this was a lot to pay for a computer, yet my cheaper Dells have felt more solid and well-engineered (but it's been 6 years since I bought one - perhaps everything has gone downhill). There's something thrown together about this one. Also, it's chintzy to only include 2 USB ports, there would have been plenty of room for a third. A small thing, and it's not misrepresented in the product specs, but not what you would expect from a high-end computer.

I needed the touch screen because of my work and studies, but the touch on this is not something you would want to use for long. You have to of course reach up and over the rest of the computer to use it, which soon causes arm and wrist strain and fatigue. I miss the Tablet PC configuration; I have a cheap touchscreen tablet PC that is much easier to use with touch than this new one. I guess they're not making those anymore. Maybe the Surface Pro will be better for touch.

I had very high hopes for my first Ultrabook, and I can't say they've been completely fulfilled. Yet my old computer was rapidly dying, and I literally took this one out of the box, plugged it in, connected to wireless, and was on a Lync meeting in moments. I have to be grateful for that.
