5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Little Travelin' Speakers...
I travel a lot and love to be able to listen to music once I'm back in the hotel room. I bought these for use with my iPod nano, because I teach classes away from the office and I wanted to be able to occasionally play a piece of music for the class. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Little Travelin' Speakers..., January 21, 2008
This review is from: Sony Transportable Speaker for iPod and MP3 Players (Electronics)
I travel a lot and love to be able to listen to music once I'm back in the hotel room. Before finding these speakers, the only options I had was to either lug my heavy & bulky iHome with me (which took up precious space in my bag) or listen to music via my headphones, which feels really weird when you're alone in a hotel room. So needless to say, these speakers were both a great find & purchase. You don't need a docking station in order to listen to your iPod. Once I opened the box, I was listening to my iPod within seconds. Great volume, great price, very compact, weighs less than a pound and can run off of three AAA batteries. If you're looking for a rich wall of sound, then this is not the item for you. The sound is on the tinny side and it also doesn't charge your mp3 player, so you will need a separate charger.

All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend these speakers for those looking a valued priced, entry level set of travel speakers.

I bought these for use with my iPod nano, because I teach classes away from the office and I wanted to be able to occasionally play a piece of music for the class. The size and style are great--they take three AAA batteries and also come with an AC adapter, plus they clip together for transportation--but unfortunately, small speakers mean small sound. I played a John Williams composition and the sound came out tinny, with almost no bass. It was a little better when I placed the two speakers as far apart as they would go (which is not far). Country fiddle music sounded better, but the quality was still not as good as I could get from my no-name $40 boombox. One more note: I bought mine on impulse at a big-box store, and then discovered that they were $2 cheaper on Amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money at any price, April 20, 2009
I recently bought these on clearance at a local brick-and-mortar. I'm not an audiophile and my needs were minimal, but ultimately I came to the conclusion that the sound quality from these speakers is pretty bad, especially considering these are active (i.e., amplifying) units.

I use the word "ultimately" because initially I was satisfied, but I soon realized that I was having a hard time really enjoying my music because of the poor sound quality from these speakers. Like others have said, sound from the M30 is best described as tinny and far-off; prototypical of cheap single-driver satellite speakers. Honestly, the only advantage these particular speakers give over passive units is a little more volume- the M30 still produces zero bass.

Also, these speakers have odd footprints that make them easily tipped over. It might sound like I'm knit-picking, but if you go against reviews and buy these, you'll probably find this problem rather irritating, especially if you're setting the speakers up on a small space (say, on a little desk, next to your laptop).

If you're looking for decent quality portable speakers, I'd recommend looking into the following:

*JBL On Tour Portable Speaker System
*Audio Source DB5
*Altec Lansing iM-237 Orbit Ultraportable
*Genius SP-i200 Portable Speakers
*Nokia MD-4

1.0 out of 5 stars Beyond disappointing, December 5, 2008

Sony should be ashamed to have their name associated with this product. It's absolute garbage. If I could have returned it without shipping fees, I would have, but as it is, I just considered it a $28.27 (with free shipping) lesson. The sound quality was far worse than most cheap PC speakers. "Tinny" would be an insult to tin. You can get far better sound for less or the same money. It's too bad, because I like their size and style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough, not excellent, December 18, 2008
I would have given these speakers 3 1/2 stars, but it's either-or on Amazon, so I'm rating them 3. I bought them because at the time I had a badly designed laptop with the speakers on the BOTTOM of the unit, so even at full volume I could barely hear it. These speakers did what the laptop couldn't do-- deliver the volume I needed. However, if you're looking for theatre-quality awesome sound, you won't find it with these. Even with a slight hearing impairment, I never forget that I'm listening to small travel speakers, and you probably won't either. They snap together for easy transport, but you have to wrap the wire around them since it's not retractable. For something to get you by, it's a good value, but for better quality, you'll probably need bigger speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars sony speakers, December 12, 2008

Even though these speakers are small they give great sound. They were the only ones I found in the category that also come with a power cord so you don't have to run them on batteries all the time. I love this feature.

1.0 out of 5 stars 1 watt ... not 20, July 25, 2008
This review is from: Sony Transportable Speaker for iPod and MP3 Players (Electronics)
this item is incorrectly labeled and sold a 20 watt system when instead it clearly states on the package that i recieved that these speakers were in fact one watt per speaker for a combined power of 2 WATTS!!!!! there is such a huge difference between 2 watts a 20 watts. i will be trying to get my money back and not pay for return shipping. these speakers are useless to me.
beware, items may not be described correctly. though amazon is a big and good company so this should be handled easily and quickly... we'll see how hard this is.
