4.0 out of 5 stars Neat effect "0" flexability!, April 7, 2005
This review is from: Sony VCL-DEH07VA Wide Angle Lens for DSCV3 Digital Camera (Electronics)
Hi again! Sinmin here! What do you think when you think of wide angle? Me, I think of beautiful bowed, pristene tropical images, or lake scenes...right!? Wellll not exactly. If you have read any of my other reviews you know that in addition to the DSC-V3 I also run a DSC-F828, both of these cameras are amazing out of the box but to expand is human, if it ain't broke fix that sucker anyway!! Yea I'm the same way! So after I bought my V3 back in Jan.and discovered all the extras I could add I went nuts!! ( there wasn't much you could add to the 828)

So I bought the lense hood, the Teleconverter lense, and this. Out of the two lenses offered for the V3 I think I like this one the best. And the reason is pretty simple, the lense does what it needs to do with a minimum of fuss. Photography is a fussy profession and/or hobby to begin with, and digital photography just gave us a whole new range of crap to fuss about! The effect the lense delivers is very understated but nice. It adds a slight bow to the image that I found to be a really pleasing effect for alot of my shots. But now here is the catch...you can't zoom in... and you can't zoom out! Ahhhhhhh! yes it would seem that the lense turns the V3 into a fixed lense camera!(FOR REAL) But now wait a minute, before you start sending Sony hate mail, remember what your looking to do with the lense in the first place. That would be to widen the angle of your shot right? well the lense does that. so Sony's in the clear as far as that goes. The construction and quality of the lense is top notch as is all of Sony's extra gear for thier cameras, the optics are great with pretty much zero distortion. I wish there was more control over the intensity and degree of the effect, and I wish Sony would start letting Ziess make thier conversion lenses as well, that along with more realistic pricing and I would have given this 5 stars even with the limitations on the camera function. Hint to Sony if your reading... If it were a Ziess lense myself and a bunch of other people woldn't mind spending more for a lense. But we'll always have Amazon (yea-I try to give em a plug in every review!)In conclusion: I like my cameras to have 200% capability so I invest in the attachments, and learn the most effective way to use them. Anything that adds to the ability of your camera is a plus in my book, and if it sparks your creativity it is a must! Despite minor situations Sony does this on a pretty consistant basis, thats why I've used them exclusively for more than 5 years. If you want fancy lense ability & 2000 frames a second then you need to stop being a cheapskate and get your butt over to the Digital SLR section and get over it. and please stop picking on us photographers who get great shots (often as good as or better than yours)using stuff like this! Its like my wife always tells me..."It ain't how big your camera is... its how you use it!" that said. I reccomend this lense, its a really neat effect and a nice addition to the V3, and thanks to Amazon the price shouldn't scare you off. Until the next time happy shopping and shooting!
