Does what it promises,

This is is a simple product that provides 34x zoom to the hx1. The low end is perhaps 20x, and it is far superior to a typical threaded end of lens addition, as it collects more light than the built in lens and is a compound-lens system.
Although it does what it promises, it would be nice if it had its own tripod mount at either the visual or weighted center of the camera-lens combination. Also, since its range of focus and zoom is more limited than the built in lens, it would be nice if instead of being threaded it had some kind of a quick release attachment. I wanted it for athletic photography, and it works well for that purpose, especially with a monopod.

Performance was as advertised. Overall I am very pleased with the conversion lens. It is very light and does a great job on birds and wildlife...the reason it was purchased. It would be nice if the price was lower, but having experience in purchasing lens for SLR cameras, I am not that upset. $160 versus over $600 for a telephoto lens for a DSLR is fine with me. Photo quality does not suffer even on the edges. You will have to use a tripod to contol camera shake unless you are much more steady than I am. I would not hesitate to give the VCL-DH1757 two thumbs up and would make the purchase again.

I believe this item is good and might be an important accessory for DSC-HX1. It's not heavy. However, it complicates the holding the camera a little bit. I like it and I enjoy using it.. I only don't like how much high its price is in comparing to the difference it makes.

this 1.7x tele-converter takes the Sony DSC-HX1 to a mega-zoom (35mm equivalent) 952mm. Do not even think about hand-holding at this length, a solid tripod and "no wind" is mandatory. Some minimal vignetting at edges with a smidgen of chromatic aberration too....not really a deal breaker, barely noticeable as I am probably a tad bit pickier than most. Seriously, if you want/need extreme tele-zoom magnification and you own a Sony DSC-HX1 then this is the bomb. It's fairly light and not big/bulky like D-SLR lenses nor is it expensive. It comes with (2) lens caps--a front & a rear plus a nice black velvet pouch w/drawstrings.

Nice addition to my Sony DSC-HX1 Camera. The lens screws easily onto the camera making it very easy to mount and remove. Just received this as a gift, but so far the pictures I've taken are clear with no distortion. I'm very pleased with this lens and I'm looking forward to taking some great shots!

A Companion To The Sony DSC-HX1,
This review is from: Sony VCL-DH1757 Tele-Angle Conversion Lens for the DSC-HX1 (Electronics)
When I did my research for a new camera, and settled on the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX1 9.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot Image Stabilization and 3.0 Inch LCD, I browsed through the optional accessories that you could pair up with it. This VCL-DH1757 caught my eye because I had never used an attachment lens at all, let alone on a point-and-shoot (although I freely admit, the HX1 is FAR superior to any point-and-shoot I've ever used). So, I looked into it and saw the boost in zoom that it gives the camera. I thought it sounded like something that I can use! I go to sporting events regularly, my niece will be marching in the upcoming St. Patrick's Day parade here in NYC, I have a 3-year old son who is EXTREMELY photogenic, and I love taking scenic photos when I travel (Delaware this March; Ocho Rios, Jamaica this May; somewhere new in August!). So, to be able to get even closer to the proverbial action with an extra zoom was appealing to me. In the end, there's not much to say about the VCL-DH1757. It does exactly what it is supposed to. The lens comes in a small, protective drawstring bag that you can store it in, as well as with a lens cap for each end of the lens. The zoom is awesome, if that's what you're looking for. Between the amazing photos the HX1 takes on its own and the extra boost from this lens, you get some nice results! There are a few drawbacks, but nothing that would turn me off from getting this. First, the HX1 has a case designed for it by Sony. The lens does not. The protective bag is just that... a bag. It won't offer much protection, like a harder case. I am currently using Sony LCS-X20 Soft Carrying Case for most Sony Camcorders to carry my HX1 and this lens. There really isn't much extra room for it, but you can safely fit both camera and (unattached) lens in this carrying case. Second, attaching the lens is a bit scary. Another reviewer mentioned that they wish the lens had a quick-release button or something of that nature. I agree that would be better. The lens screws into the lens shaft of the HX1. I don't know about the other owners, but when I screw the DH1757 in to the HX1, it makes this "Freddy Krueger" screechy noise that really got me worried I was hurting the camera. It doesn't hurt it, of course, but it's just a little uncomfortable. Next, the size of the lens. I'm not skilled in the inner workings of lenses, but this adds some length and bulk to the camera. I couldn't picture attaching the DH1757 to the HX1, attaching a tripod, and trusting that it was balance nicely on the tripod as is. You're probably going to need both hands to use the HX1 with this baby attached. Truthfully, I've always felt you're better off using 2 hands anyway, with bigger cameras. This isn't an ELPH. It's a nice piece of equipment. None of the "drawbacks" I've listed though, diminish from the quality of this conversion lens. If you're doing some nice, distant shots, this will help you get even closer. I highly recommend it.

Not as much additional zoom as you'd like.,

Seems sturdy and fits well. Not too heavy. Doesn't increase the zoom as much as you'd expect or at least as much as you'd like. I probably wouldn't make the purchase again after seeing the limited additional zoom.

This item is just what my wife needed for her new camera. We came back from Switzerland wishing we had more telephoto power. This lens is the answer. It arrived in excellent shape and in a timely fashion.

Great for the money. It easily threads on the existing lens. And provides just that little extra zoom I often wished I had. Great for my wildlife and bird photos. Focus of course is more difficult to achieve as with any long lens. Setting my focus to center helps greatly. You will need to be 10-15 feet away from an object with this lens.
Some poor reviews I read had to high of expectations in my opinion. Its certainly no telescope. I have taken several bird photos with it. And have captured some spectacular close ups, considering this camera and lens is far from professional grade or cost. Well worth the money IMO.
