5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Rocks outstanding product quick delivery
This lens conversion rocks, crispy clear results, I am not a professional photographer but man I feel like one with this on my DSC-H1 it really enhances it already outstanding ability to capture those special moments from a distance unlike the generic lens kit I purchased thru ebay. Don't fool with those junk lens kits this is the one to get, Amazon really comes thru

3.0 out of 5 stars Blurry around the edges
The lens zooms OK, but I find too many pictures where the image is blurry around the edges. I would not buy this again, but might try another brand. Also, the 1.7 zoom is not quite enough to get the real close-ups needed. Maybe 2.2 would do, but 3.2 would be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lens! Great price!, June 20, 2005
By
This review is from: Sony VCL-DH1758 Tele Conversion Lens for DSCH1 Digital Camera (Electronics)
(Note:) This is part of an email message I sent to the Amazon seller that I puchased this lens from last week.

*****************************************************************
I received the lens today. It is superb, and I thank you for the fast
service and great price. I'll be leaving you very positive feedback shortly
for this transaction.

I ordered this for use with my Cybershot DSC-F717 camera. The lens they used
to sell for this camera was the VCL-HGD1758. It sold for well over $200 and
had a list of $299 on Sony's website. Although it is not advertised as a
match for this camera, it seems to be the same lens as the VCL-HGD1758,
except it is in an ABS plastic housing.

I have compared the images I have taken with the lens I just received from
you with sample shots from the VCL-HGD1758 and they are equal if not maybe
even better. This lens weighs a lot less than the older one and should be
even easier to use. It appears to be an even better lens arrangement than
the heavier, higher priced unit.

I have noticed that the VCL-HGD1758 lens no longer appears on Sony's
website, nor will a search on their site turn up any reference to it. And
they do not refer to the VCL-DH1758 as a replacement for it. Sony does say
that this lens is to be used with Cybershot models with 58mm threads, but
only recommends the DSC-H1 model

What I'm getting at here is that you might consider advertising this lens
as a great telephoto lens for the DSC-F717 camera. You should be able to
sell quite a few to the users of the DSC-F717 model. They sold tons of those
cameras, and it also will match the DSC-F707 as well. I'm pretty sure that
it is a match for the DSC-F828 also. The price difference probably would
make it very attractive to owners of these cameras who aren't willing to pay
over $200+ dollars for such a lens. And, as you are probably aware, most of
the aftermarket lenses of this type are absolutely dreadful. On Ebay, even
the used VCL-HGD1758 goes for over $180 and although I was outbid on 2 of
them, I'm very glad that I bought this one instead. A very consistent
complaint about the VCL-HGD1758 was it's cost and extremely heavy build that
made it difficult to handle the camera when attached.

*****************************************************************
The VCL-DH1758 is a perfect substitue for the much heavier, more expensive VCL-HGD1758. I can'r say absolutely, in that I don't have the VCL-HGD1758 to compare directly, but I'm pretty sure it has less chromatic abberations.

I bought this for use with my DSC-H5 which only has 12X optical zoom :) I felt that I wanted more zoom capability and have been very happy with the results.

I did research on non-Sony lenses and ruled those out pretty quickly.

I bought this conversion lens for my DSCH-1 camera. I first used it on a recent trip to Cape Cod and I was thrilled with the excellent photos I was able to take of distant objects (mainly boats and shorebirds). I take alot of photos to use as references for painting projects, and I was delighted with the high quality shots I was able to get using this lens. I also fount it easy to go back and forth between using the tele-converter lens and the regular lens on my camera.

I am buying this lens because of A A Katz' excellent white paper on the Sony H1. This will tell you what you need to know to get the most from this lens on any camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Lens, December 24, 2005

I bought this for my DSC-F717 camera. The magnification is specatular...there is a big difference. It is perfect for concerts or plays if you pay for cheap seats and have to sit in the back row =) As a novice, I've notice you have to zoom out to telephoto. If I leave the zoom setting to wide, the inner portions of the lens shows up in the picture (a black ring). I will have to play with it more to figure out if there is a way around this.

I recommend a tri-pod to keep the camera steady since this lens adds weight to the camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great telephoto conversion for the Canon S2 IS and S3 IS, June 11, 2007
By
This review is from: Sony VCL-DH1758 Tele Conversion Lens for DSCH1 Digital Camera (Electronics)
If the 12x optical zoom on the Canon S2/S3/S5 isn't enough then you can add a teleconversion lens that will bring out details of distant subjects. Sony's DH1758 is well known in the Canon S2/S3 community because the quality lens provides 1.7x more zoom without vignetting, soft corners, or sacrificed detail. The reason for this is related to the lens used for this adapter which is on par with the Sony H3 and this effectively turns a $300-$400 camera into a fairly close approximation of the telephoto lenses available for DSLR's without having to spend thousands.

In addition to the potential for zooming in on objects farther away, this particular adapter also works well for being stacked on a macro lens. Not only does this increase the power of shooting in macro-mode or using macro lenses in general but it allows you to shoot a very sharp shot from farther away. This makes it easier to get great results for subjects that are likely to be disturbed or shadowed by close proximity. Depending upon the macro lens being used, you can expect to take a macro photo from between 7-10 feet away.

If you are in the market for a teleconversion adapter, you can't go wrong with the Sony DH1758 for the Sony H or Canon S lines.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice addon to your camera, June 9, 2007

This review is from: Sony VCL-DH1758 Tele Conversion Lens for DSCH1 Digital Camera (Electronics)
Well, even if 1.7x doesn't sound that big, if you pair it with big resolution and then crop the area you're interested in, the final result is a very nice and closer shot.

I have a sony DSC-H5 and I've taken pictures of birds, planes, buildings, etc. and I really like this lens. It also fits any camera with 58mm threads (like in my case, most cameras require an adapter tube for attaching lenses/filters).

In *my* case, it's not that good for quick/sports pictures but for those ones where you can take your time at aiming at the subject. Maybe this has something to do with the camera itself. It does some very nice closeups and face portraits too by using it relatively near the subject.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1) Since it brings everything closer, at full zoom it also enhances distortion from hot air (I live in a very hot country) and long distance subjects appear like "brush painted" when looked closely. This doesn't have anything to do at all neither with the camera nor the lens. In a colder weather I guess this is no big deal.

2) Ultra long distance shots require tripod or faster exposures in most cases since camera shake could lead to blurry pictures. Distance indeed distorts the image a little so it will always be less sharp than closer ones.

3) Like all add-ons lenses, you have to set up your camera so it extends its lenses to the point where it eliminates vigneting (the sensation you're looking through a tube). In the case of the H5 it zooms up to 6x which multiplied by 1.7 equals 10.2X so it starts almost where the original camera zoom ends.

4) Because of the size of the lens, camera's onboard flash is blocked but hey.. this is meant to be used on long distance. How many distant shots are taken using flash?

All in all, I really love this lens. Quality is excellent. It's plastic to reduce weight a little (though the camera feels heavier) but still lighter than a DSLR and it's still very manageable.

I've had this lens for a little over a month now and I just love it! It takes awesome shots, especially when you need to get closer to wildlife without spooking them. It is a perfect add-on lens for my Sony H-2. You won't regret your purchase.
