Review of Sony VCL-HG2030 Telephoto Conversion Lens,
By MH Serafin (Manchester, NH USA) - See all my reviews

I like the Sony VCL-HG2030 telephoto conversion lens. There is just one issue I don't like and that is an annoying "ring" around the picture field in wide angle. See my video review.

Nice little performer (just think about a tripod),

I used this 2x lens for the first time on my Sony DCR-PC350 - a good quality DV camcorder with a fairly good lens Carl Zeiss lens.
The lens comes with a keep-safe pouch and two lens caps. The front one comes with a hook to attach a securing lead to - but no securing lead. It screws on and off easily - no major likelihood of cross-threading. I keep the camcorder set to max out at the optical zoom limit - not using digital zoom. At minimum zoom you get small dark edges to the picture, but no real problem since normally you'd attach the lens for a max zoom! The lens adds a bit of weight to the palmcorder and of course the anti-shake is pushed to its limits. I'd recommend a monopod or a tripod if you're looking to use on extended distances. I used it for videoing my partner in a rowing race - they start over half a mile away and it still filled a quarter to a third of the frame, so it did a great job there. The camera had some difficulty auto-focussing in low light, but switching to manual solved that - and that's more the camera issue than the lens. For playback the quality was pretty good (the camera shakes aside) - some slight loss in quality at maximum distance - but that's playing it on a high-definition TV. On standard definition, or having recorded to a normal DVD I don't think you'll see any drop in quality. Very pleased with the performance - it's a fairly high price in comparison to some of the OEM products you can find - but the good results make up for it.

I got this for my Sony DCR-DVD505. It works well, but you have to be careful not to pull in too close or you get a dark ring around the video where you see the inside of the lens frame. Overall, it is a good product and made very well.

El telefoto sirvió bastante para la cámara de video digital de mi cuñado, quién deseaba tener un mayor y nítido alcance cuando hacía sus tomas. Por ser marca Sony, es un artículo de presición y muy fino.
