This desktop is powered by the 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 processor, which offers a light-speed 1066 MHz front-side bus speed and 6 MB L2 cache. Part of Intel's 45-nanometer (nm) Penryn series, this processor boosts speed and multi-tasking capabilities while it reduces power requirements. Five high-speed USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire/i.LINK port are conveniently located on the back and sides for easy access and let you attach virtually all your peripherals without having to buy additional hardware. Other features include a 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (maximizing capacity), Draft-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Gigabit Ethernet networking, Bluetooth connectivity (with stereo music streaming), S/PDIF digital audio output, Intel GMA X4500HD graphics (with 1750 MB of total available video memory), and integrated 3-watt stereo speakers (for 6 watts of total power. It comes preinstalled with the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1).

The Basics

• Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Penryn series Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 processor, which has a 2.53 GHz processor speed, amazingly fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. And you'll be able to encode video on-the-go and watch HD movies with Intel HD Boost.

  The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

• Hard Drive: The ginormous 500 GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

• Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC2-6400, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity for this notebook,. It also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed.

• DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVD±R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD±R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500, which uses shared video memory (up to 1750 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

This desktop also has an integrated Intel High Definition Audio card with Dolby Digital Live, which provides real-time encoding technology that converts any audio signal into a Dolby Digital bitstream for transport and playback through a home theater system. It provides Dolby Digital (5.1-channel surround sound) during movie playback and gameplay, immersing players in high-quality surround sound that puts them at the center of the action. It includes two built-in stereo speakers, each with 3 watts of output (6 watts total).

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Enjoy easy wireless networking with the integrated tri-mode Atheros Draft-N wireless LAN (compatible with 802.11b/g/n wireless networks). Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. I bought this computer to replace a ten-year-old desktop that was definitely showing its age. I couldn't be happier with it. I wanted an all-in-one type with wi-fi and bluetooth (to easily share files with my cell phone). With the wireless, it leaves me free to set it up anywhere in the house and be able to move it around easily when I feel like it. Couple this computer with a wireless printer (which I did), and you have an extremely flexible system unencumbered by wires that looks great sitting on an end table in the living room or anywhere else. The all-in-one types are not as upgradeable as the traditional desktops with the tower but that is not an issue for me. I never upgraded my last desktop. The performance of this machine is excellent and the display quality rivals my HDTV. I do have some minor software issues that I'll have to iron out. The defrag utility performs it's function to completion but if I start it up again it will say that the disk is still fragmented. The same is true of the Windows Live One Care utility and the VAIO Care utility. They will scan and "repair" what they found, but when the software runs again, the same problems are found every time as if the repairs didn't actually happen. I didn't downgrade my rating for these issues though because system performance as of yet has not been affected and I am very happy overall with this computer.

I was originally going to get a Mac for twice the money. I'm glad I got this one, and saved the money. I am having a couple of issues that are Windows related. But, that's Windows not the Sony Vaio. I highly recommend this computer.

Very, very nice design in an all-in-one PC package. Excellent value in features for the price. Apple PC's can't come close in the value/price ratio. The only small issue was with the DVD/CD cover. It was loose from the box and had to be put back on. No problems since this simple repair.
