Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

When space is at a premium, the Sony VAIO VGC-LS1 all-in-one desktop PC/TV offers a slender, space-saving design that will complement your living space while also providing a powerful home computing platform with an integrated widescreen LCD TV. Reminiscent of a classic glass picture frame, the remarkably thin VGC-LS1 is enclosed in a transparent polycarbonate frame, giving it a stunning, floating effect. And with built-in wireless LAN, included wireless keyboard and mouse, and a wire-organizing/concealing back panel, the VGC-LS1 fits seamlessly into any home or office for clutter-free performance and sophisticated style.

In addition to its computing prowess, the VGC-LS1 also doubles as a 19-inch LCD TV--featuring Sony's XBRITE-HiColor panel technology for brighter imagery and more vibrant colors. It has a standard NTSC tuner and the PC is run by Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, which provides DVR capabilities with effortless on-screen navigation of saved programs. It has a built-in DVD burner and Sony's Click to DVD software so you can create a digital entertainment library for personal viewing at your convenience. It also features an audio/video quick resume switch that shuts down the display and the audio output without the PC having to enter sleep mode, allowing you to return to full PC functionality without waiting for the computer to shut down or boot up.

Under the hood, the VGC-LS1 is powered by Intel's powerful Core Duo T2400 processor, which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and a more efficient power consumption. The dual-execution core T2400 has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, lightning quick 667 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache. It also features an extra-large 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (maximizing capacity), Intel Graphic Media Accelerator graphics card with 128 MB of shared video RAM, multi-format memory card reader, and a wealth of Sony multimedia software. This is Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The extra-large 250 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: The Intel Core Duo T2400 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3-D and 2-D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, 533 MHz, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 1 GB) maximizes the capacity for this machine, enabling you to effortlessly handle a wide variety of multimedia tasks right out of the box.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x for DVD+R DL, 2x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 4x for both single layer DVD+RW/-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The included wireless mouse and wireless aluminum keyboard folds up for a beautiful presentation when not in use.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 19-inch LCD panel has an amazing 1680 x 1050-pixel resolution. And thanks to Sony's XBRITE-HiColor panel technology, the flat-panel screen will deliver dazzling colors and sharp images whether displaying a DVD movie, television show, or web content. You can connect a standard antenna or cable/satellite set-top box to the VGC-LS1 via either RF, composite A/V, or S-Video connections.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It offers both VGA and S-Video output connections for connecting to monitors and TVs. Audio is powered by Sony's Sound Reality audio enhancer.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
By utilizing the unit's built-in wireless LAN (802.11 b/g) technology, the VGC-LS1 can be positioned virtually anywhere in the home or office and still access Internet sites, e-mail, and networked PCs and hard drives. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54 card slot (in addition to a standard Type II/I PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 composite A/V input
  • 1 S-Video input
  • 1 RF cable/antenna input
  • Memory card reader (supports optional Memory Stick and Memory Stick DUO media with MagicGate functionality and Secure Digital Media)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (Update Rollup 2) is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. This is a great product. This PC is compact and a great space saver.
The built in hardware is wonderful. Very few wires and and electrical cords needed. I am sold on this product. Sony did a great job on this design. I would highly recommend this product. Also like the wireless keyboard and wireless mouse.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seems like a sweet machine until the drives stop working, February 24, 2008
This review is from: Sony VAIO VGC-LS1 All in One Desktop PC (Intel Core Duo Processor T2400, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive) (Personal Computers)
Lasted a little over a year, then the DVD drive would only recognize CDs, not DVDs. Sony support is terrible. Tried to upgrade to Vista, and despite what the Sony tech support site had to say (and a software utility to examine the machine) - not. The Vista install was a disaster, Microsoft tech support gave up completely (as did Sony's). I had to do a complete restore and went back to XP. Curiously, now the DVD drive recognizes DVDs. Who'd a thunk? Expensive, time consuming fiasco. We're on our own out here, 8 hours on the phone to India, and I had to figure it all out myself! Yuck.
