Never Received It From Amazon's Marketplace For Individual Sellers, October 13, 2011
This review is from: Sony VAIO VGN-FZ340E/B Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0GHz 3GB 250GB DVD±RW 15.4" Vista Home Premium w/Webcam (Personal Computers)
I ordered this used laptop from one of the individuals selling in the, new to me, Amazon sponsored marketplace for individual sellers. I exchanged emails from the seller, he even lowered the price as per my request, and I made the purchase which went through the payment process. I gave it a few days and I never received any more information such as the expected shipment confirmation. I also noticed that I had not received any more correspondence of any kind so I went back to Amazon's site and sent the seller my request for the shipment confirmation. I kept watching my email for the next 24-hours to no avail. I returned again to Amazon's site and noticed the seller had not emailed me directly, but commented on my request at the site itself. Reading his comments I saw that he was an engineering student and had been busy in school and was going to get right to shipping it out. Still not too upset I accepted this as something I could work with. What happened next surprised me the seller emailed me saying that he had decided not to sell due to cost of paying someone to transfer his hard drive which would make the sales price effectively too low for him. Well, I have transferred hard drives myself several times when upgrading capacity and, outside of the cost of a new hard drive, I used freeware and my costs were negligeable. I don't know how Amazon vets sellers, but I am writing this review because this way my first time buying from an individual through Amazon and it did not impress me. I do want to stress that I did not, as far as I can tell by on-line checking, get charged for the item even though my sale went through the Amazon payment process-so that is good, but I am disappointed and hope Amazon strives to make this service more like other purchases through the site.
As for this laptop. If I disregarded the problems with this particular sale via Amazon and an individual I would rate it a solid 4-star laptop. I have one and have enjoyed for about three years now. It is under-powered by the current (2009 onward) crop of laptops to be sure, but it has its good points. For one thing, the case is all magnesium and it shipped with a Blu-Ray player. It never did 1080p video, downloaded or streamed, well, but it would play a Blu-Ray nicely. The units had a video card on the MB that, unfortunately, had a penchant to overheat and eventually fail. Sony stepped up to fix any units purchased from legitimate dealer by the original owner without regard to the warranty being expired. This is the way all manufacturers should handle known issues and I applaud Sony as they have repaired my unit twice as of late 2011 at no charge to me. This makes me believe that Sony is much better than so many manufacturers when push comes to shove. The reason I was wanting another unit was to take my hard drive out of mine and put it in a working laptop as recently my units LCD screen failed (not related to video card issue, just something that happens when you keep a laptop long enough). I will get it fixed, but I wanted no down time so I thought I purchase this used one on Amazon. It just didn't work out due to the reasons the seller sighted. The one-star review is, therefore, a reflection of my experience in the Amazon Marketplace buying from an individual. Again, I must stress that even though I am disappointed in this still-born transaction there was no loss of capital, just disappointment over the Amazon Marketplace for individual sellers.
