Ok, its no fun if your machine goes down. While you wait for it to come back from the shop, it would be good to have a spare, right? So, I bought this machine and never used it until after the warranty expired. I got tired of transferring files manually with an SD card so, started learning about ad-hoc networking. Both my parents have sworn by Sony Vaio laptops, and have had several over the years. I decided several years ago to purchase a Vaio desktop and was very pleased. Since my new business requires the use of a laptop I decided to give this one a go.
I have had the unit for about 6 hours, and I'm overall pleased with the unit. The screen is wonderful, very vibrant and big. The colors virtually pop out! It is also very easy to type on, the keys fit my medium sized hands nicely.
The downside of the unit is of course Windows Vista, it would be nice to be able to get an XP version. There was a lot of junk software installed, trials of Office, Norton 360, Scattered with AOL software, all sorts of junk which I guess is to be expected these days so if you don't need any of these items be prepared to spend a lot of time uninstalling.
The other downside is the max of 2 gig or ram -- the video card takes up up to 384 mb so you're left with 1.6 gig. They should allow you to go up to at least 4 gig which Vista can use effectively, check ou the tech sites because even several sales people were of the belief that Vista can't use more than 3.6. Check the tech sites, they will explain what will happen to the remaining .4 gig.
This is a preliminary review, if I have any issues (non Vista related) I will post a follow up, but honestly I must say I really like this laptop even with the issues addressed above.
Oh, I'm not an audiophile, but the sound seems fine to me. I like the fact that I can pop a disk in and play it without booting up the laptop, although I doubt that I'll get much use out of the feature. :)

Ok, its no fun if your machine goes down. While you wait for it to come back from the shop, it would be good to have a spare, right? So, I bought this machine and never used it until after the warranty expired. I got tired of transferring files manually with an SD card so, started learning about ad-hoc networking. It appears that Vista Home Premium ships with Windows Meeting Space. That would have been great for what I need but the Sony gypped me, the folder can't be found in the program files!!!

Why didn't I use the Sony more rather than sticking it back in the box? I prefer my HP pavillion 6000. The sound is much richer on the HP, the touchpad is centered, the palm-rests are slippery and, I just like it better.

I'm just really feeling a rotten, wondering what other software is missing on the Sony.

This product is amazing and well worth it. I only paid 549 for it but would say it is still worth the 779 its normally listed at i highly recommend it to anyone considering purchasing a laptop!!!

I am totally pleased with everything. I live in Hawaii and got my lap top in a few days. The price was right and I am totally satisfied with the Vaio.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor choice for a hunt-and-peck typist, July 22, 2010
By

I had hoped to go upscale by getting a Vaio.

My primary use is word-processing, from emails to work reports. I am a hunt-and-peck typist. Other laptops, maybe half, have given me problems with letter-entry (deleting letters) because the pressure on my keystrokes (describes as "pounding" by my wife) must be too variable. I've had some problems with this keyboard in that respect, unlike my office Toshiba, which is fine. Far worse is the fact of the large, exquisitely sensitive sense-pad. My right thumb must unconsciously brush it, or affect its magnetic field, because I'm always finding blocks of test transposed into different parts of the document, causing a major "redo." Other than this problem, the battery now has a short life (perhaps over-charged too many times), and beyond that I have no complaints.

2.0 out of 5 stars basic laptop. very limited video, September 27, 2009
By
nice solid design, nice monitor screen, adequate battery life. video chipset is very limiting: adequate for static display but won't support full screen video without jerking and skipping. although easily connects and detects external vga monitor connection, again it won't support full screen video at resolution, particularly at HD resolutions. forget all gaming except flash based web games.

Hard drive failed after 6 months light useage but generic replacement easily found, drive removed and replaced. came loaded with bloatware, most from Sony Vaio but also with the aol/Norton/MS limited offers. annoyances include lack of dedicated volume controls and WiFi switch that is easily knocked and turned off.

has survived kid's useage without damage so far.

Currently operating Win7 RC1 nicely, unit is basically a full sized netbook with a CD/DVD drive

It's not the best computer of the world, but I think it's ok for the price. Good RAM memory, good processor, acceptable disk space. For that price, it's a good adquisition!
