This is everything i wanted in a new PC. Quick, stylish, feature packed, lightweight. With the Blu Ray player this is a killer buy esp. avoiding local tax. The blu ray mouse i bought to go with it is awesome as well. Great size and weight, Has all the feel of Sony quality!!

Everything about the machine is a joy. Of course, it is stylish. And the size is great if you are going to be carrying it around a lot as I do. (I had a hard time finding a good laptop with all the things I wanted that didn't weight about 7 or 8 pounds). On a practical level, it really delivers. The keyboard, with the chiclet keys, is very ergonomic. The extra function buttons are useful. The page up/page down/home/end keys all require the use of a function key with them. For some programs, this means you'll need to depress three keys to complete an activity. But the use of space on the keyboard overall is very good. And while it does come with some crapware, that is easily removed. The VAIO update function keeps up with necessary driver updates for you. Win 7 Home Premium is a big step up in performance, reliability and security from XP, and the machine boots very rapidly. On the downside, it does not come with a CD of the operating system for use in recovery.

I bought this Sony Vaio back in December 2009 and have used it every single day since then mostly for internet surfing, game playing and watching DVD & Blu-ray discs. While this model is no longer available, I'm leaving this review for those who are seeking this kind of info as to how a Sony Vaio holds up over time.
I never turn my machine off. I use it on AC power 70% of the time and battery power the rest of the time. Battery life has been fairly good. I can have several windows open in both IE and Google Chrome, play games, run You Tube videos and the battery lasts up to around 2-2.5 hours. The screen is great and delivers true colors. The speaker system could be improved. I often have to use an external speaker X-Mini II Capsule Speaker-Red to get the desired volume. But after about a year, some of the pieces began chipping off at the flex point between screen and keyboard. It hasn't affected performance but shouldn't be coming apart since I haven't dropped or abused this machine. The wireless on/off tab also fell off somewhere along the line. Also, the paint on the touchpad right and left click buttons has worn off from use (I never use a mouse, though, so they have seen lots of use). And finally, the right click button is starting to fail. I give the product 5 stars for delivering great performance the first year and three months. However, it is now beginning to also show signs of internal problems in that it's turning off unexpectedly, usually while running a graphic application (i.e. Amazon VOD or a game). For $879 I expected it to last at least 2 years but here I am looking for a replacement, thus the 4 star review. Overall, I would have recommended this Sony Vaio to my friends anytime in 2010, but would caution them to pay less money for it now. |
